Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2018 (Read 704 times)

Flavio thanks for the vote of confidence but with only 6 weeks mileage under my belt 38.30 would be a stretch and I know this from my tempo efforts.

Flavio - NZ is a pretty small place when it comes to running and at this point I pretty much know all the other fast runners, at least in Auckland.

Piwi - what race is the 10k race that you are doing?  I do want to do a 10k race on a flat course at some point as all mine have had hills too.

Steve - bugger on the calf but plenty of other chances to hit a quick 5k with parkrun's etc these days.

Keen - haha it all depends where you are!  Places like the US with large landmasses tend to have much more predictable weather patterns than small islands in the middle of the ocean like NZ.  Weather forecasts can change but I'd sure be more confident in a 10-day forecast for somewhere in the middle of the US, than a 10-day forecast for Auckland, NZ!

      RIP Milkman

Keen - One thing I had in my taper, and have had each one: I feel great, and then the week of the race, I feel AWFUL. My paces were horrendous and each run felt insanely difficult at just easy pace. But, when I ran 3 miles the day before as my final shakeout, I knew everything was restored as I felt great. Expect to go through something similar. Also, if there's anything to be learned from my race report, it's that second 5K where I was WAY too fast. You may go through the same thing. As I was slowed down to real MP of 6:15 at that time, I honestly felt like I was slowing down to what my easy pace feels like most days, it was that easy. Like I went out at what felt like MP, and then all of a sudden what felt like MP turned into MP-20.

Flavio - The stay healthy is key for me. My foot still hurts and I have no idea if it'll really flare up as I get back into real mileage for me. I'm hoping the fact that I'm barely running this week will further heal it.

Steve - How do you do your rolling? Just making sure you're doing it slow enough, and when you find a knot, you hold down on the spot for a good 20 seconds. The key is not to just roll it, but actually do it as if it were a professional masseuse.

Steve/Piwi - What type of shoes do you do your training runs in? Also Piwi, good luck this weekend, I think you have sub 40 in the bank unless your calf acts up. Based on your tempo efforts I actually think you're sub 39. No sandbagging your goal here

Mark - Piwi is probably doing a Clown Run or Park Extravaganza or whatever they call his fun jogs where we get great pictures from him that look like he's running in someone's backyard. People as fast as you aren't allowed. Stick to your championship races, or as we used to say in grade school, PICK ON SOMEONE YOUR OWN SIZE

Me - Got the official marathon results, and I ended up finishing 326. Now, that doesn't sound impressive, but when it's out of 53K runners, I'm pretty happy with that result, especially when at least 50 of those people are professional runners.

JMac - I do tend to go quite fast over the trouble spot.  I'll adjust it as you've suggested.

326 does sound pretty impressive to me!  Or anyone who's ever heard of the NYC marathon I would think.

I wear Kayano 24's - just cracked a new pair.  I actually wore them last Thursday but didn't want to risk massive blisters on my long Saturday run so went with the worn ones.  That may have been costly.

Jmac 326/56k is ridiculous. I think NYC has around 1000 sub 3 runners.

I wear Nike Pegasus for most runs. Love these shoes and have a fairly fresh pair. My calf injury is not related to my shoes Im sure.

Mark/Jmac my 10k is a school fundraiser ( Golden Sands School fun run ) not even chip timed. However its a decent event with around 1000 last year over the 5k and 10k. Some of my facebook running group mates organize it and they do a proper job unlike some promotional companies.

The course will have been measured by one of the runners and rechecked off their GPS. Bad news for me is my Tomotom will likely read 100m short so Im going to run through the finish till I hit 10k on my GPS

Im going to get a new Garmin FR35 at xmas such is the issue with my watch reading short.

And how many NZ marathons have over 326 runners?  Auckland, Rotorua and Christchurch comfortably.  Wellington sneaks over.  I am not sure how many more.

me - we tried running this morning here in Belfast, we ended up turning back half way cause we're not fans of the ice bucket challenge LOL

Cold rain and 10c 50F is not my favorite running weather. Hopefully we get better luck tomorrow. I sent a message to Marco, but not sure he's in town this week.

I got curious about the weather here and the yearly average is 3h of sun light per day. That's just so sad.

Flavio, welcome to Belfast... I had to take a few days off running and then stopped writing on this because I got too busy. Yesterday was a nightmare... but today we may manage to meet. This morning I went for a 5 miles run and the road was essentially a river (no joking at some point I had water up my knees...), but it is not too cold...  do not start with the whether and sun, winter here is really sad and bad... I essentially leave waiting for March to come from October...

I will try to catch up during my travel on Saturday and see if I can put together a decent post with some plan for the future Smile

                    JMac - Awesome overall placing!
I've felt pretty decent so far though the taper, but my HR is WAY low for the paces I've been running - likely at least partially due to colder temps. My biggest concern now is picking up a bug from one of my kids.

I had a great time meeting Marco today here in Belfast. Thanks Marco for the coffee and the chat!

I fancy the day I’ll meet Piwi as my expectation is that it’s going to be epic! The only problem is I can't seem to find New Zealand on the map.

Mick Ive heard that too. Ive been running 8 years but far from consistent......

Watson that sounds about right. The Tauranga one is only 200-300. We just dont have the population in NZ and there are so many events.

Keen - cold temps will do that.  I had the opposite situation this morning - an unusually warm, humid morning and my HR was still pretty low.  I expected it to be higher as this is the first time this has happened since last summer but it was pretty low.

JMac - awesome on the placing.  For such a huge event that really is impressive.

Piwi/Watson - I suspect Queenstown has pretty good numbers too as it tends to draw a number of runners from offshore purely as a destination event.  Hawkes Bay would probably also be over 326 but not by too much.

Marco/Flavio - good to see we have managed another forum meet-up!  We've actually done pretty well this year in that regard.  By my count:

And it makes marathon racing hard in NZ.  Such small numbers make it hard.  I remember Wairarapa last year with about 30 marathon runners.  From 5km to the finish I had two half runners overtake me, and I overtook one full runner.  Apart from that I was all by myself.

At least there's enough half marathons with around a 1000 runners.

Blackmore's Sydney in 2015 was really good.  The half had 7500 which gave a big race feel.
