Jmac hopefully the foot gets better soon too.

I'm with Keen I like the smaller races... only supposed to be around 1000 or so in the marathon I running although there will be about 2000 in the HM starting and running the same route through about 11 miles.

        Flavio - no. No marathon.

Me - couldn't resist adding one last race to the schedule for the year.  There is a 5000m event run by one of the local clubs, Bays Harbour on Dec 21.  It is up at the track I use from time to time and has become a pretty cool event - often with the odd elite runner or two dropping in.  This year they have actually got Nick Willis (Olympic 1500m silver and bronze medallist) in the mens A event.  Needless to say I'll be in the mens B event! (Last year the B event had times ranging from mid-15's to mid-17's)

Its about time to tackle the 5k Mark. What do you think you have in you? You want to show'em that they should have put you in the A group? Wink

Seriously: your current PR is from a year ago. So some improvement should be doable?

MJ - I honestly don't know. The 5000m track event will be faster than my 5k race in a couple weeks due to a) fast track surface (vs. road/grass), b) no hills (the 5k has a short sharp hill in it that you run twice) and c) no weaving (the 2nd lap of the 5k can get crowded when overtaking).  I haven't raced anything less than 10km since then apart from running a 5km TT a few months ago which was bang on my PB.

For the 5k race, assuming the weather plays ball, I will aim to PB (my current PB is from the same race last year). Definitely something around the mid-16's and anything below 16:30 would be a great result.

The 5,000m is harder to gauge.  The track is definitely a little faster and there will be some good runners to chase.  Maybe 10-20 seconds faster.  I do know I'm not fast enough to be in the A race! The slowest in that race last year was 15:17.

To be honest mostly I'm just gonna rock up, run hard and have fun.  I haven't raced a 5km in a year so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.  Trying not to overthink it because I really don't have any benchmark other than "I should be faster than last year".  Even that's a little dangerous... it took two attempts to beat my 10k PB this year and given that was an old PB on a tough course I thought I'd get it the first time.

Mark I think your estimate of the track been 10-20 secs faster is right. I love the energy return from that surface. Far out Nick Willis will be cool to watch.

Piwi - Bummer about the DNF and the calf, but you clearly made the right decision.

Mark - Good job on building the kilometerage (is that even a word??). Are you going to keep up the higher distances in order to prepare for something, or is it just happening?

                  JMac - Nice week.

CFarr - Nice week. Tapers suck!

One more week of taper done, with a possibility of DOOM on the horizon - DW got sick over the weekend. The kiddos and I aren't having any problems so far, though.
We got our first snow of the season overnight, with just a bit of it continuing now. Quite wet snow, and the ground isn't cold enough for it to stay long, but it's still nice to see out the window. And was pretty fun to run in this morning, too.

CK - I just had a look at the website for your race, it looks fantastic.  I also didn't realise you got snow in that part of the US so early in the season, although I did go through Kentucky and Tennessee around this time of year and it was cold!  Looking at the results from last year, you must be favourite for gold?

My week was disrupted by the calf so stuck to the bike, with a small tester on Saturday but I wasn't comfortable so ended after 10 minutes.  Feels pretty good now so I'll give it another go tomorrow.

I've noticed some of the non-Kiwis getting a bit lippy...as your overlords we would discourage this.

                    Cobra Commander Keen

Steve - The flat course is the reason I chose this race - I literally looked up all the marathons within a few hundred miles for this time of year and went with the flattest one! Despite a flat course the race itself isn't too fast (CR in 2:5x, I think), so I'll definitely be towards the pointy end of this one.
We don't typically get much snow at all, especially this early - it's far more likely to get rain that freezes after it lands. It's actually still snowing, but the roads are clear because their temp is still too high for it to stick. The melted snow will likely freeze overnight, so I'll probably be on the treadmill for my run tomorrow.
Good luck on your test run tomorrow.

Oh, and the last time our overlords discouraged us Americans getting lippy it didn't turn out too well for them!

Day 3 no running for me. Did a 5k walk with my wife yesterday with 250m elevation and have done the odd bike ride with my son. Those activities are fine as they dont require the bounce muscles of running as Im sure you all know

Might try a short tester tomorrow although I still feel it walking around.

Wifey is away until the end of next week so I unfortunately have to run later in the day than normal.  It was 20C when I ran at 9am this morning!!  Outrageous!!

On the bright side, it's useful acclimatisation for the Omaha HM in a few weeks.

Keen - yeah that looks like a really fun race, I had a look at the website too.  Only tough thing would be the two-lap nature of the marathon - I always find multi-lap courses pretty mentally tough.

The mileage boost is just my coach trying to get a bit of extra training load in before Omaha (I think... unless she's subtly telling me I should do another marathon haha).
