Another one of those days... (Read 598 times)

Why and ear/nose/throat doc? Does he have strep or influenza? (it ain't bronchitis)
The family dr and the ER dr are still sticking with Bronchitis as the cause of the fevers, although I was thinking the antibiotics would have taken care of the fever by now. The ear nose throat dr is to check out some theory on the possibility of his throat having some sort of growth or blockage...my husband went to the appointment today, I wasn't there to ask more on why. Something relating to finding out why he's been snoring over the past few months...maybe it's an adnoids (sp?) thing. Who knows...well, the e,n,t dr should be able to tell us! I'm not all the keen on having Aaron being poked and tested by a million different doctors, so we are going to do this one specialist at a time. It's amazing how sickly Aaron has been in comparison to how healthy my older three children have always been. I don't know how parent's of a child with a terminal illness find the strength and continue to have faith...I can only imagine what they go through. Seriously...I cried when my daughter was crying because of the pain her braces were causing...I felt like it was my fault. I'll update after we see the neuro dr...that's the appointment I'm most anxious to get to.

ENT for snoring is fine. Neuro and ashtma docs are required at this point. However, something else is bothering me. I will try not to be to subtle here: - BRONCHITIS IS A FAIRLY MEANINGLESS TERM BUT GENERALLY REFERS TO AN INFLAMMATION IN THE BRONCHI TRIGGERED BY AN ENVIRONMENTAL INSULT, TYPICALLY ALLERGIES OR SMOKING AND OCCASIONALLY FOLLOWING (BUT NOT DURING) A VIRAL INFECTION. - BRONCHITIS ITSELF DOES NOT CAUSE FEVER AND FEVER TO 103 FOR DAYS IS NOT FROM BRONCHITIS. PERIOD. END OF STORY. - ANTIBIOTICS ARE DANGEROUS DRUGS THAT ARE OVERPRESCRIBED. - ANTIBIOTICS SHOULD BE GIVEN ONLY FOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS SINCE THEY DO NOTHING FOR VIRAL INFECTIONS. - COUGH AND FEVER IN ABSENCE OF PNEUMONIA OR TUBERCULOSIS IS NOT BACTERIAL. - COUGH AND FEVER IN ABSENCE OF PNEUMONIA OR TUBERCULOSIS DURING FLU SEASON IS ALMOST ALWAYS INFLUENZA, PARAINFLUENZA OR AN UNTYPED VIRAL INFECTION. Just sayin.
Trent, I beleive everything you just wrote. So why do docs routinely prescribe antibiotics for bronchitis? Is it to make the paient think they are doing something? I don't get it. It happens ALL THE TIME. What is the deal?

My gut feeling is that something isn't right and I don't like to ignore that feeling. Not when it comes to my children.
Michelle, I'm so sorry that you've had to go through this. I hope that you can find answers you're comfortable with. Your gut "knows"!! How is Aaron now? ((Hugs))

Bronchitis is real and may improve from antibiotics. But a fever with a cough is a sign that the cough is not caused by bronchitis. Like a fever and a stuffy nose is typically not sinusitis. Instead, both are typically viral. While bacteria may cause fevers such as with pneumonia (as in the case of cough and fever) or strep (in fever with a stopped up nose, perhaps with a sore throat), bacterial bronchitis and sinusitis are typically fever free. Why antibiotics? How is this: "Doctor, you mean I waited in your waiting room for two hours and have been sick for 5 days and all you are gonna do for me is tell me to go take some sudafed!?!?" Typically, that is why. Easier to prescribe than to fight. Or to educate. And after a while, it just becomes habit.
              How is Aaron now?
He's doing okay. He's up and down with this thing. Right now his temp is low, 99.5, but we are keeping him on the double dosage of Tylenol and Advil. His little body is trying to fight it off. He's getting his appetite back, so that's a good thing, that ought to help give him some fuel. Thank you for asking. Smile Even being sick he still finds the energy to play his Gameboy.

I get annoyed when doctors jump right into the antibiotics. It's not often I feel the need to take the kids in to see the dr. When I do it's usually for extreme reasons, or when I know a bacterial thing is going around. My 12 y/o had a rare reaction to Strep some years back, he ended up with Henoch-Schonlein purpura. It was the freakiest thing I've seen, his joints all swelled up, he looked deformed. We took him to the ER and after testing him the found that he had a strain of Strep, that went untreated and so it attacked other parts of his body (this is how I explain it). He never complained about being sick so we didn't know. So with that history, as soon as my 12 year old (Charlie) mentions that his throat hurts I schedule an appointment just to make sure it isn't Strep. He's had Strep about 5 times in his life. Well, maybe my older kids haven't been all THAT healthy after all. Anyhow, I'm not a fan of antibiotics. I'd just as soon hear that it's a virus and what ever it is has to just "run it's course". I hate taking meds and I hate giving meds to my children.

Trent....another interesting bit. My aunt just informed me that my mother is HORRIBLE about remembering my medical past. My aunt says that for a fact (I guess her word is gold), my last seizure I had was when I was six and a half, and it was from a high fever. So maybe, just maybe....Aaron is just taking after my side of the family. Somehow that made me feel better. I turned out okay....well, my husband said that is still up for debate. Confused

I'm glad to hear it! I feel relieved just when they start eating better too. Definately a good sign! Keep us posted!

                      another interesting bit.
This IS a good bit of news. Big sigh of relief. Make sure to let the neurologist know that. My favorite comment to somebody demanding antibiotics after wating in the waiting room for hours: "I am sorry you had to wait, but that does not change your physiology." That typically works for folks.
Roll eyes Maybe this is where we went wrong and where all the health issues began...(bad parenting) As we were watching one of the older kids play t-ball we finally realized that Aaron was chowing down on dirt...so what did I do? Took a picture first, THEN stopped him. Just kidding! I know dirt didn't do it. Tongue

Trent.... Took evil wee one to the Allergy specialist today. Found out he's seriously allergic to 1. Horses 2. Cats 3. Dogs and then some outside stuff, nothing major there. The big one is the horse. Our house is OLD and the walls are mostly all plaster, which, way back in the day plaster was made with horse hair. Have you ever heard of that? We have lots of work to do.

Do you know for sure that there is horse hair in your plaster? Old horse hair may no longer be allergenic.

Good point. I'm still letting all that was discussed today sink in. We'll do the research before doing anything drastic.

                              Michelle

We took Aaron to the Neuro and all is well! The specialist doesn't begin to worry about Febrile seizures until a child is age 7. Plus, they did an EEG on him and that was all normal, she tested all of his motor skills and etc. and all was perfectly normal. *big sigh of relief* Of course we've been on edge since now he's sick again with a fever to go along with his ear infections (took him to the dr. this a.m.), poor kid can't get a break from being bogged down with one sickness or another. At least these fevers are staying low and not likely to prompt a seizure. Now we're waiting it out to see what, if any, difference the Singulair/Nasonex/Flovent make in his health. So far, nothing.
