Why Is the Republican Field So Extreme? (Read 2137 times)

Sadly, after some recent events I'm a cynical old bird and the bolded section is about as far as my faith goes.

Alright then, I'll turn down the music and get off your lawn pops.

The reason Freedom Of The Press was put in the Constitution was to make the transparency created my media coverage part of the system.  To help hold up accountability.

Ok, that sounds plausible. (I lack the background in constitutional history to know.)

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

This is why dictatorships take over media outlets....you control the information, you control the people...why does China filter the internet?

Hey, no worries, I'm A-OK as long as I have my religion and guns to cling to.

Not having read any of this thread - Is extreme mean different than current politicians views or different than the people they represent's views?

Example - Obama has talked about student loan relief - Polls show over 2/3 of Americans are against that idea - So to me that is "Extreme" when you are tying to do something only 1/3 agree with.

There is no side or 1 politician that represents my views - I find it funny how they try to get our vote by playing to a passionate subject that we have that really will have very little to do with how they wholistically represent me.  It seems to me we elect the person who is best at misdirecting our attention away from the real imprtant stuff and to the stuff that makes him / her look best while tactfully slinging mud at his / her opponent to continue the misdirection.  To many of American's fall for this crapola because we are too lazy to do extensive research on all the important topics.

Things have been set into motion from Regan - Bush - Clinton - Bush & Obama that have us on the brink ... We are where we are because of choices you and I (Everyone has made)  Mostly ages 25-55.  But as typical Americans we try and blame the other party, the other person, Big Corporations, Unions ,,, It sure as hell can't me my (all of our) faults.

Long dead ... But my stench lingers !

Spaniel - Maybe we should act qucik and buy a few thousand acres of desolate forrest land in the UP and declare our own country ... Grow what we need to eat & make beer and wine, shoot it and eat it ... My wife is a RN - Hell maybe we could start a casino on the edge of the property and expand into 10s of thousands of acres.  Just think about it - Hunting any time you need meet.  Maybe we could represnt our country in the olympics?

Oh, I guess that would be a little extreme

                  Spot on!

                  We did this to ourselves.

All of us are to blame.

Neither right nor left were solely to blame.

Neither right nor left has the solution.

and Led - if you really want runners knee then I would suggest trying that ostrich or t-rex form Rich mentioned. I bet you'll be right as rain in no time.

I'm taking that under advisement.  A Spaniel comment (which I liked, BTW), brought to mind our Jester friend - the one person who has nothing to learn.

There are few runners out there who have nothing to contribute, and fewer who have nothing to learn.

I'm not up to reading The Leviathan right now, but I do want everyone to know that I am smack dab in the center.

Such places exist already....they are called Indian reservations.  Wink

My wife is an RN/NP....they'd patch us up well after stupid stunts like running Isle Royale in a day (I will do that some day).  Come to think of it, that would be a good place to take over...easy borders to defend and plenty of game.

We would have to bring in one of the 1% with us though, so we could tax the hell out of them and go on public assistance.

                            Why is it sideways?

.  Even without a reply you went on to liken the accidental injury of a protester with a tool intended to be non-lethal (remember, even tasers used to avoid shooting people sometimes have resulted in death) to deliberate shootings at Kent State.

Actually, it was Nader that made that connection.

I am sorry that I misconstrued your posts. My questions were actually questions--yes, strongly worded, but they were not personal attacks. I was outraged by your lack of outrage at this sort of police action. I condemn that political position. I find it wrong-headed. I'm sure there are tons of things that I say that you find wrong. I'm happy to hear when you do.

But I will not stand for you to attack my person, call me paranoid or crazy, or attack my profession. You can call me an asshole, if you like. I'd prefer that; at least it's a dignified form of address.

Anyways, I know that I am not free of culpability in our "feud." I don't really give you the benefit of the doubt. I look for the points of disagreement in your statements, rather than points of agreement. I did curse at you once in a private message because just after you had attacked my profession and person in public, you sent me a PM in private, saying you would like to extend an olive branch to me. You kinda spit on my face in public, then condescended to me in private, and it pissed me off. I regret it, if that matters.

But you know what I would really like? For you to stop attacking me personally, calling me paranoid, crazy, and insane in public. Making up lies about what I told you in private. That would be great. Thanks in advance.

I'm sure you are a nice guy in real life. Aren't we all.

(remember, even tasers used to avoid shooting people sometimes have resulted in death)

All else aside, I find this belief that police are always held to accountability before the law a bit dubious.

Quotes not working on my browser.  You all don't know your Oakland recent history, which includes clashes between protestors and police on the exact same intersections as these recent Occupy protests.  Those earlier clashes resulted from the death of an individual named Oscar Grant, an African-American, who was shot in the back of the head by a transit police officer, white, while Grant was lying face down and handcuffed on a train platform in Oakland.  There was video of the incident.  The officer was charged, and then acquitted of all but involuntary manslaughter by a jury which credited his argument that he was going for his taser.  Riots, etc.

I'm not saying that the Oscar Grant history lead to this, but it sure as hell explains a lot of the trigger fingers on both sides.  As for the argument that "what could the protesters expect when they were ignoring an order to disperse?" why was that order given?  Was it appropriate?  Necessary?  To say that they must be dispersed at all costs?  The police showed up loaded for bear; they faced a group of protesters many of whom had clashed with them in the very recent past.  What would anyone have expected?  That the people in charge on the side of the city didn't see this coming -- and now aren't taking responsibility for it -- is shameful.

Not about national politics, but had to weigh in as it's about my city.  On running, I'm glad I didn't do my regular Jack London route on Tuesday, as I'd have run right through the tear gas.
