Why Is the Republican Field So Extreme? (Read 2137 times)

Why is it sideways?

I am okay with most of what's out there. As Popeye says: "I yam what I yam."

At the end of the day most people are perverse, every time a major superstore is planned in the UK there is a huge campaigne to stop it but once opened they are full of people? Imagine trying to run a country where the "people" have a vote on every issue, within days it would make Greece look functional.

"If you follow the money rather than the blather, it's clear that the American system is a bipartisan fusion of economic models broken down along generational lines: unaffordable Greek-style socialism for the old, virulently purified capitalism for the young. Both political parties have agreed to this arrangement: The Boomers and older will be taken care of. Everybody younger will be on their own."

Good quote and good article.  Thank you.

One has to wonder if better private retirement planning and more saving would have been done if the Boomers had not been guaranteed a public "safety net".  Part of me thinks they would have.  Of course the cynical part of me thinks that this would require too much far-sighted planning, and like the grasshopper from the old children's story a lot of them would have ended up knocking on the ant's door anyways....

Of course, the gov't finds a way to punish even those that do plan.  I learned recently that Michigan is now going to tax IRAs twice...when the money goes in (as is standard) AND when you withdraw it.  So it's double-taxed....my parents are left wondering if they wouldn't have been further ahead taking it to Vegas and betting on red.

Most of my Republican friends seem fairly moderate: they want low taxes, a good economy, little foreign intervention, fewer regulations. The current crop of Republicans seems to me totally unrepresentative of their positions. What gives? Do I just misunderstand the views of candidates like Bachman and Perry? Or do I misunderstand my Republican friends?

4 years later...this thread seems almost cute now.

                    Indeed.

And folks like Trump and Carson seem to prove Scout's point incorrect.

I was just highlighting how extremism is subjective.
