    Retired &  Loving It

This thread is always so much fun to go back and peruse through.

Doepicruns - Congratulations on the weight loss, but more importantly - - congratulations on the 3 1/2+ years of sobriety!!  My husband is a recovering alcoholic, so from that standpoint, I know from whence you came.  Very proud of you.  April 21st will be The Hub's 3rd birthday.

              Wow!!! Way to go shipo!

              So bittersweet,
              This tragedy
              Won't ask for absolution;
              This melody,
              Inside of me,
              Still searches for solution.
              A twist of faith,
              A change of heart
              Cures my infatuation.
              A broken heart,
              Provides the spark
              For my determination.

Thanks folks, in early 2013 I saw this fat old man looking at me in the mirror and decided to quit one of my two jobs and use my spare time to get my butt back out on the trail.  Even I'm (pleasantly) surprised what a year and 2,500 miles of running can do to a person's body.  Smile

Wow, that's a really awesome accomplishment!

Just out of curiosity, are you saying that you went from couch potato to averaging 200+ miles per month in less than a year??? For myself, when I first started running, trying to do more than 20 miles per week always led to an injury. 50+ miles per week right out of the gate seems like a lot of mileage for newbie legs!

                            Latent Runner

I don't know if I would have qualified as a newbie in April of 2013 as I have been a runner off and on (more off) for decades now.  Per my running logs:

                              • 2012: I managed about 300 miles in the first half of the year.
                              • 2013-Jan: 25 miles
                              • 2013-Feb: 22 miles
                              • 2013-Mar: 10 miles
                              • 2013-Apr: 40 miles (when I left one job and got serious about running again)
                              • 2013-May: 56 miles
                              • 2013-Jun: 136 miles
                              • 2013-Jul: 218 miles (my first 200+ mile month of my life)
                              • 2013-Aug: 254 miles
                              • 2013-Sep: 208 miles
                              • 2013-Oct: 228 miles
                              • 2013-Nov: 235 miles
                              • 2013-Dec: 232 miles

Contrary to previous attempts to restart running, I decided to strictly adhere to the following rules wherever and whenever possible:

                              • Run exclusively on dirt (except for races and when the dirt trails around my home are impassable due to snow, ice, or mud)
                              • All workouts will be LSD (once again, except for races and kicking up the pace once a workout had passed six miles)
                              • Run every day (except for the day or two prior to a race, the thinking was the cumulative fatigue would keep me so slow I wouldn't get injured; seems to have worked)

                              Fat old man PRs:

                              • 1-mile (point to point, gravity assist): 5:50
