I'm not one,, but am inspired by your accomplishment.

        Suspect Zero

I'm not either, but like andre said, am inspired by you. On a related note, I ran this HM last year and will be making it an annual event http://www.lifelineofohio.org/8632.cfm?show=detail&eventId=724 In addition to being for a great cause, it's a superbly organized race on a great course.
Not a recipient, but have indicated on my license I am donor and told my family the same. I'd like to think in the event something happened to me and my organs were donated that they'd go to someone who is active. Preferably a runner. I too am inspired by you. Run on.

Do heart valves count? in 2003 when my aortic valve crapped out, my pulmonary valve was removed and used to replace my aortic valve. A donor valve was used to replace my pulmonary valve. It is called a Ross procedure.

Of course it counts Smile Do you have to take ainti rejection meds? I've never really understood why people look at me as an inspiration...I'm just like anyone else, except running around with someone else's liver inside me...my heart and legs are my orginals Smile

Out of curiosity - how does being a transplant recipient affect you and your running? Especially after all this time? Are there special things you have to do? Foods you have to eat? Things to avoid? Like I said, just curious. This place tends to recycle the same dozen topics over and over and over again ... and this is definitely a new one to me. Educate us, please. I'm interested. Can you always run after a transplant? Is it different for other organs? Oh - and what the heck are the "Transplant Games?"

                  Cause I CAN

I love curiosity, thats why I ran a marathon, wanted to know why in hell anyone would run that far Big grin Anyway I personally don't do anything different than any of you...Due to the long term use of predisone for the transplant, I do have issues with my back and hips so I listen to my body and if I feel like I'm pushing too hard, I back off and take an extra rest day. I think as for me always running, I would like to hope that I can run till I'm a little old lady but only time can answer that. I was 13 when I had my transplant and will be 30 this may. I will keep running for as long as my body will let me. As for any other recipients running and being able to do it long term, its really more about the person and their own experince with the transplant. I am very lucky that I haven't had any problems such as rejection and my health is perfect. A lot of recipients assume they can't run because of the transplant which is one of the reasons I do, I want to show them they can. The transplant games are an event held every 2 years in a different city, its basically our own olympics. Of course I run track. Its there to raise awarness of organ donation and to honor our donor families.

Thank you. Really interesting stuff. I'd suggest you start a group ... but it might be a lonely group for a while. How do they classify the contestants at the "Transplant Games?" I mean - do only heart transplant recipients compete against each other, etc? I always wondered that about some of the similar competitions, like the one for people with disabilities ... how do they avoid giving somebody an advantage? For example, is the guy with no arms necessarily equal to a blind runner or a deaf runner? Is a heart recipient = liver recipient? What events are you in? When and where is the next one?

                      Cause I CAN

its broken down into men and women and then you have age brackets...like I'm in the 30-39 so I would run against other women in that group who've had whatever type of transplant. One recipient doesnt have any advantage over the other its basically just like it would be in any other race or event....there are some amazing competition and then there are those that know they wont win but are there for the fun of it. I guess to answer the question "is a heart = a liver" I've beaten some heart recipients and have been beaten by heart recipients so guess it is more or less who is faster rather than organ in that case. I'm doing the 5K, 1500 m run, 800 m run, 400 m run and 200 m run. It'll be held in July in Pittsburg.

No meds. One of the reasons I opted for this procedure was the fact that I could be med free for the long term. There was a week or two of simple steroids immediately after surgery that I understood to be for rejection. Do you need to take any meds still? I guess I feel the same as you, I am the same as everyone else except that my heart has been re-arranged with recycled parts. My only restriction is on lifting heavy weights and creating too much of a spike in blood pressure that could damage the valves.
