Mother of Cats

So....here's how I think of this thread.  It is the equivalent of a standing only/general admission rock concert.

Occasionally (or regularly) a mosh pit breaks out.  If so, you can choose to go into the pit, or step away and stand off to the side and enjoy the music.  Occasionally someone will jokingly push you towards the pit - if you don't want to go, you just step away.

I'll also note that general admission rock concerts are not everyone's first choice.  Some people prefer sitting at tables in jazz venues, or on the lawn somewhere.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

      My truck incident:

On 5/20 I was running 400m repeats on a very quiet frontage road near a lake (not the main road but a partitioned off section). While running a large pick up truck (raised Ford 150) intentional swerved across the road and I had to jump up over curb onto grass while running 5:14-20 pace. My foot came down funny on curb and I strained my calf bad enough it turned yellow/green while healing like the back end of a bruise disappearing.  I then further hurt it as I had to walk 1.5-2 miles home limping.  I could see the guys face and he wasn't on the phone or anything but after falling down, I didn't see the plate number or anything and he accelerated very fast after he Sally me fall.

I love this. So well said, especially about the part around pushing you towards the pit!

DPS - crazy story. Intentional or not, that sucks. Seems like you recovered well though given how you ran Grandma's!

That's pretty awful, Dan.  I've had some close calls due to driver inattention, but I'm not aware of ever having been deliberately targeted.

I shouldn't be running as much as I have but I found out the job that spent 2 months recruiting me and 4 months of me working there has decided with the economic conditions to lay me off (downsize/redundant) after I left a very secure government job. I job was developing affordable housing for people with disabilities. So running mostly as therapy to make sure I'm tired enough to sleep some at night. The board did a total 180° and my layoff (and pretty minimal severance) was a complete shock.

Oh man that sucks. I am sad for you and sad for all the people with disabilities who need affordable housing. Fortunately the job market is generally still pretty good right now, hopefully that is the case in your field as well. I got laid off in Nov 2019 due to business conditions somewhat specific to that company. I wasn’t too worried as the market was OK at that point, but then COVID hit and all job openings vaporized. Fortunately I found something after a few more months, but I sure put on a lot of running miles while unemployed!

DPS - That absolutely sucks about the job - a few years ago I was recruited and left a job I enjoyed but thought the new one would stretch me a bit more.  It was coming up to the end of financial year and on my 8th day me and the whole team, including the guy who recruited me, were called one by one to HR and let go.  We were escorted back to our desks and watched as we packed up.  Someone asked me what was going on and my HR escort told me I wasn't supposed to talk.  I had been finding the whole thing mildly amusing to that point but that comment caused me to unleash the fury and tell her to f**k right off.  I was lucky enough to go back to my old job in a better position which I probably wouldn't have left in the first place.

Also sounds like a shocker with that idiot in the truck, particularly at that pace.  Did you get the registration?

                    Running Problem

                    Problem Child

dwave I'm too old for mosh pits. I learned this recently at a Limp Bizkit concert when it broke out behind me at the end of the concert.

Also, no one pushed me towards the mosh pit known as marathons. I actively seeked it out. I don't care if I used the proper term, because everyone knows what I mean.

To add to the mosh pit.... those who don't enter the mosh pit, or observe it in an attempt to learn anything don't see there are rules of conduct. It just looks like a bunch of angry teenagers  middle to late aged individuals trying to hurt each other.

dps damn dude...that blows. I have friends who joke about doing such things to me "If I saw you out on a run." Intentionally wanting to do harm to someone is fucked at ANY pace. Sucks on the job too. I recall you being really excited about making the transition too. You seem like too nice of a guy to have this type of struggle. I hope you can get some help like the help you get others, if that makes any sense.

Anyways....back to focusing on me....I should have run another 0.02. I ALMOST did another 1 mile as a second run on Sunday, but when I was falling asleep at the dinner table like a baby who hadn't napped yet I decided against it. I was actually falling asleep driving home (not as bad as last time) and almost took a power nap in the car was after grocery shopping. I'd like to think my wife knew I'd be useless on Sunday, but at the same time I'm sure she expected A LITTLE bit more. The 2 hour nap during movie time just made waking up this morning harder. I was apparently snoring so loud while sleeping on my back she woke me up and told me to roll over.

This is a good analogy.  I enjoy a good moshpit but I sure get pushed into them a lot more than most on this thread.  And circle pits aren't always that easy to get out of either.  Sometimes, you know, you just want to get a drink and hang with your friends or go to the bathroom.

DPS - bummer on the job and sorry to hear about that truck incident, sounds rough but I'm glad it wasn't any more serious.

Can you actually prove this? The mental fortitude to run on Sunday after I arrived home could have great emotional benefits in one of my next training runs. "If I can do that I can't complain about this being too hard to finish."

EDIT: steve this wasn't an ultra. It was pacing. I know that sounds weird. It was Western States and I volunteered to pace a guy for the last miles to help him finish. He is from Whales. I'd never met him before today. Unsure if he likes me anymore. Big grin

Marathon training question: What’s the thing from your training that really gives you confidence that you can hit your GMP?

To me, the hardest thing about marathoning is knowing on race day whether you have it. But my best gauge is probably 2 weeks out, I do something like 16 miles with last 10 at GMP. I can almost always hold it, but it's the level of effort that gives me an indication - it should feel like you're pushing, but not killing yourself.
