Running Problem

Problem Child

JMac what are you training for? I thought you were done with marathons? Also, I do enjoy the photos.

CC Best of luck on the decision. Hopefully it goes well. If I remember correctly you pulled the plug on a 50 miler earlier this year, and had a rough 50k before that. Oh and I kind of got lost on my trail run on Saturday. The Fenix 6 has a really nice map feature with it, and even though I have been on the mountain before, I still like having a map. Sometimes I'd go too short and be bummed, while other times I'd end up going 8 miles farther because I thought "this just goes around here and heads back." I was up in Seattle for Father's Day weekend and met up with a buddy. We played around on one of the mountains next to Cougar and were there for 3 hours. Probably more hiking than running due to how much green growth, mud, water, and vertical gain there was. Mentally it was wonderful. Reality is I ended up being away from family for about 5 hours because I was staying a little over an hour away. Even my buddy's wife was texting him minutes after we finished asking when he'd be home.

Dave Your experience with the group is one I dread. I can say "on paper" I'm one of the fastest runners in our group. I also take pacing serious even if it's a Sunday group run. I have no problem commenting on "so we're trying for 7:50s right? This looks a lot like 7:30s" to people. I guess the workout made you feel good about running with 2:59 marathoners and that's always a good feeling during marathon training.

What is your 10k PR so others can give you a good suggestion. Mine is typically "checkers or wreckers" which is comparable to "PR or ER."

DW sorry about the friend. Congratulations on the new job. Mixed about running feeling "meh" and taking a back seat. I've been there and hope you can get out even for a 30 minute jog just to break things apart and get some endorphins going. Will the new job be 100% remote or are you actually going to show up to the office daily now?

Marky_Mark I'm still loving your Strava titles.

Steve Is there any live tracking for Melbourne (Mel-bin) marathon? I might be up at the time it's going on.

    My week:

I'm looking for something to do. I considered speed work but it was ridiculous hot the day I was goin to try it. I kind of want to run CIM (December marathon) and try for a NYC qualifier, but I don't want to buy a $275 entry. Since I haven't done ANY speed work (ultra marathon/vertical gain focus) this year, and ZERO races I haven't even been interested in speed work. I need to make myself do it at some point, and set a schedule. If I DON'T run CIM I at least want a good showing at Boston. Friday it rained, and I didn't see a reason ot be at work forever so I went random street exploring. Saturday was while the family was playing at a park. Locally there is a bunch of letters painted on hills for the state or city name. In college I heard there was a hike to go paint one of the letters blue (college colors) and "guard it" against our rivals during big rival game week. I found the trail and went to it. I jogged past some hikers thinking "wow I'm still in good 50 miler shape, and this is a pretty steep hike so I'm glad I'm in shape." Overall the run was shorter miles than I wanted but the time was good. Sunday was hot, I was busy and if I didn't have a run streak I would NOT have gone running after kids went to bed. Thankfully they went to bed early (yay back yard splash pad) so I could get some miles in. I was kinda sad I overslept the Sunday Runday group. I did want to go with them.

Oh, and my Jeep Cherokee is off jackstands. I took the axles out and put in ones from a one ton F350. In the photos it has two different sized tires. The front tires are 40" tall (actually 38 because they're old and worn out) and the back are 35 (actually 33 because old and worn out. It can't drive because I need to put brakes on it, but I told my wife she could call her dad and have him roll it onto a trailer so she could park in the garage again. It's been here since March when I did my 50k. It's been 95+ A LOT of days this year so parking outside kind of gets miserable. I plan on driving this to ultra marathon aid station volunteering opportunities. It's why I posed the photo of the Jeeps the day before my ultra. I like this kinda stuff.

50 miles of running. A few miles of walking because "Garmin Challenge" and getting away from the desk is nice.

Steve - It's a bit crazy that you were about able to witness the demise of a 152 y/o tree like that.
Awesome LR, btw. What gels do you prefer?

Flavio - Nice week! I like how you looked to stop the LR at exactly 2 hours.

Ian - Awesome that you were able to bump the mileage like that for the first time in so long.

DWave - Interesting perspective on racing a HM before tapering for a full.
Sorry to hear about your friend. Congrats on the new job (and nice week), though.

Caitlin - Nice week. How have the Garmin workouts been treating you?

Dave - Nice workout, and good luck on the race this weekend.
My workout this week (Wednesday, race Saturday) is 4x 400/200/200 with 1 minute walk between each rep and 3 minutes walk/jog between each set. Getting in some good work around race pace (probably 1 less set than I would have done normally), but with PLENTY of rest so it's not as much of a strain.
Maybe 4x 1km with a usual amount of walking recovery, or doubling the usual jog recovery?
At this point your workout (and mine, of course) won't do a thing with regards to fitness for the race itself, but more help keep things sharp.

RP - Pretty solid week. ETA on front brakes for the jeep?
I would think Boston would be in the qualifying window for NYC next year, but it obviously hasn't been listed yet. So even if you don't do CIM you should have a good shot at getting that qualifier on a downhill, cheater course like Boston. Especially if there's a tailwind!

I had a pretty nice week, including a repeat of a workout I did a few weeks ago. It was a good deal more hot/humid this time so I used that to add to the intensity instead of using pace for the same. It was a good deal tougher this go-round, but I think I executed on it better overall than I did previously. Upping the pace certainly wouldn't have worked out well for me at all.

The forecast for my race is looking ever-so-slightly better than before, and better than I could have hoped for. It's now forecasted to be ~72F/22.2C, compared to my average run temperature of ~82F/27.8C over the last 6-8 weeks.
If I get a temp like that I'll try going out aiming for 18:05, possibly sub 18 depending on how I actually feel.

RP - I'm running NYC this year and then retiring from "competitive" marathoning.

Boston is not going to be a qualifier for 2023 NYC. The qualifying window usually ends in February. This past year it was March though.

Just a heads up though: you can run a half marathon to qualify for it, no need for the full. I actually already ran a qualifier in one of their (NYRR) halfs this year, so I am guaranteed entry into 2024 if I feel like it, maybe run with RP as long as I can?

CK - what's the Kiwi Point for the race? Also, I'm going to have to start doubling at some point given I'm trying to run myself into the ground with mileage. I assume the best place to start is to double on my recovery days, right? I usually do 11 mile easy runs, but my recovery runs are 7, so I was thinking on recovery day do 7 and 5.

JMac - Kiwi point for the race is forecasted to be 137.
The HM time for a NYC qualifier seems much easier to me than does the M time.
I'd actually leave those recovery days as they are and tack on the double (maybe start at 30-35 minutes easy) to a workout or otherwise longer day (not an actual LR day, though).
It keeps the recovery days much easier on yourself while just adding a little more volume to one that was already tougher. 5 easy miles is a lot more of an addition to 7 recovery than it is to 11 easy, or 11 with some workout miles.

Ian - it seems you put in a very consistent training cycle, this could turn out very well for you.

              Also 2h49 running, very impressive!

DW - my condolences and so sorry to hear.

And best of luck on the new gig.

Caitlin - yes, 2 hours is helpful , but I reckon the coach is just easing me back up in mileage.

It's good to see you around.

Dave - during race week a workout with the same race pace intensity just much lower volume, so like half that one you just did 4x800. You just want to get the legs moving a little to imprint race pace effort.

Best of luck on your race!

Steve - LOL no idea how the tool will handle it, but I'd pay a dollar to hear an English native speaker saying Rarotonga, it must be funny.

Enjoy your travels, make sure to read the papers before you go so you can impress the locals with your knowledge of the future.

Jmac - yeah it's just the coach easing me back up in mileage though I'm sure it will be beneficial long term not sire it helps the race.

Those qualifiers are insane, it's much easier to run the half times.

Keen - heh, my runs are prescribed in time, so one could say I failed by one second.

Also that forecast is horrendous for a 5k race haha I hope you're a better hot weather runner than me, I'd easily lose a minute in that weather.

              Running Problem

              Problem Child

JMac appreciate the info. I knew about the half marathon. I just never run those and I'd assume it has to be certified. NYC would be similar to Boston. "I'll try to get in and when I get in I'll run it" so in my head a 2:58 qualifier when I'm 40 sounds logical. A 1:23 or 1:25 half sounds much harder right now. Mostly because of the certification requirement. Some local half marathons have measured 12.9. Urban Cow in Sacramento might be the only one I'd assume I could use for NYC qualification standards.

EDIT: as for running with me for "as long as you can" I'm not sure how to take that. I'm chatty so either you're getting tired of explaining things to me, or you jsut cant run 8:30/mi pace for a full marathon and feel the need to bust out the speed for the final 25 miles.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

                Hot Weather Complainer

Flavio - I expect it will use the local time on each run to calculate the weekly, so I may get my biggest ever week by cheating...but then a low week the following week.

Keen - Another great week.  Good luck for the 5km.  I think you can crack 18 but that weather will make it hard to run your best race.

JMac - It really means something to get that sort of feedback from someone with your running credentials.  Those qualifying times for New York are interesting - I have a chance if I run a really good half but I'm not in the ballpark for the full.

RP - Nice work on using the local pronunciation!  There is live (every 5km) tracking, both on the app and a link which I'll post here.  They haven't updated from 2021 yet though.  The race will start about 1pm Pacific time (not sure on the exact hour because of daylight saving changes).  It's a 7am start in Melbourne, but daylight saving ends overnight the night before the race so it's essentially a 6am start.  I suspect that may catch a few people out.  I'm sure the organisers would have preferred to go a week later to avoid that complication but they usually have 1 week open at the MCG in between the football and cricket seasons.  I don't mind the early start given a hot day is possible, although unlikely.  I don't expect I'll sleep that well anyway.

piwi - How do we get you over here?  I might need to go back to posting on both threads after all...

I recommend getting old! (But don’t break down too much.) I’m 57 and ran qualifying times last year in both half & full. I agree the HM time is much easier; I can hit that pretty readily, while the full requires a very good day.

I haven’t run it though, and have no immediate plans to do so. I’m sure it would be great, but it’s a big trip. From the west coast you can’t do it without 3 nights hotel stay at NYC prices, plus airfare & race fee. My wife is a non-runner and puts up with a lot of my BS, but I have to be somewhat judicious in how much money (and vacation time) I piss away running stupid marathons. Maybe someday.

piwi - How do we get you over here?  I might need to go back to posting on both threads after all...

I thought posting a story about a man's junk falling out of his shorts again would light the piwi signal - but it hasn't worked just yet.

86.15% age grade at the half yesterday. 1:28:11 with +/- 400ft. Not sure why I thought a race in San Francisco would be flat  I'm fine with it though since I haven't been running hills in training and didn't have much drive to race all out. Very low key race by a local running group where I was by myself for the entirety. After some time in the ocean, went to Outside Lands to see Pussy Riot (and Weezer lol) Weezer's best song played was Enter Sandman (32:00). Great weekend escape. Several pages of posts I have missed since last visiting.

My week aside from the half was easy running on 4 days plus a Tuesday workout of 6 x 800 (3:04) w/200m in 60 sec

                          Hi

                          Cinnamon damn 86 % that's great.

Yeah I miss you guys. When the threads split I went through a transition ( not gender ) to running for fitness only so I'm back at 30 mpw which is lame on here but probably still makes me a compulsive runner.

I'm surfing alot this week so my back is very tight.

I see Mickjogger from the Waltons entered a surf entry on strava today. I was impressed.

Shoutout to Calsbear too who did some crazy 50k race with big elevation.

You guys are doing great with your marathon training, Steve, Keen and co.

Wow, incredible! And that’s tough elevation for a hard-raced half.
I like a fair amount of Weezer’s music, but I’ve heard that recently they’re very underwhelming (at best) live. What did you think?

Dave I'll work on getting older.

Steve I had a local (well....from the country) inform me of the proper pronounciation. It now bothers me when I think of the "American" way of saying it because it makes me think of Jason Bourne.

For those who care about such things, the United States Federal Goverment has made a website for tracking heat.

There is a Pink Area on the East Coast right now. Oddly, it stops at the Delaware State line.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Mark, I looked at the details of your Strava run cause I was shocked you ran so many segments without a leaderboard placing.  What are so many sub 5 min runners doing in Sydney?  Where is Strava if all they're all cheating with bikes?

JMac, I do not enjoy racing shorter distances and even view the HM as a nessecary stepping stone to the marathon.  I started in the Waltons because my 1:50 HM goal was a lot closer to 1:30 than my sub4 goal to sub 3.  I'm slowly accepting that I'm on a slow journey to becoming an ultra runner but I'm not quite ready to give up on getting a BQ.

RP, my heart says marathon we'll see if my legs can catch up.  I was able to use the map feature on my 755 very successfully my trouble was building my route around Strava segments that in hindsight were years old and didn't account for how quickly forest brush grows.  We all know you're going to run CIM, you should just go ahead and accept it.

Keen, thanks.  The garmin workouts were a good way to keep myself in check and come back conservatively.  I like to check what it suggests each day even if I don't intend to run it just to see what it thinks I should be focusing on and every so often it has a really fun workout.  Hope the weather keeps trending cooler for your race.

Flavio, thanks.  15mi is 'easing' back in....wow!

Cinnamon girl, very nice HM!  Are you based in CA?

I had amazing OR weather for my run this morning.  60s and cloud cover at 9am   My parents live way out in the country so it's a lot of gravel roads which is not conducive to speed work but will be perfect for base building.
