the Smiles per Mile is much more valuable.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Mmmm Bop
I might take you up on that, especially if the post-race festivities really get rolling! Darkwave: Would be cool if you made it as well. For the 5k is there any qualification needed, or is it just a regular race? JMac: I remember reading that Kipchoge said he'd like to move to ultras after he retires from the marathon. That would be pretty cool as I think he could demolish some flat longer distance records like the 100k or 100 miles on a track. It will be interesting to see if he can drop his WR even lower next month in Berlin. BTW, you asked about what's next for me race-wise; if things really start clicking I might look at Houston, otherwise it will probably be a spring marathon, not sure what at this point. Even Houston might be tricky since we're going to Bucharest for Christmas this year (my wife's family).

No problem as there’s a lounge sofa bed. I’ve never been to Bucharest…but the wife and I spent a lot of time in nearby Bulgaria (Sveti Vlas) before they joined the EU and it was sooo cheap…a decent night out would cost about £15 each.
Longboat - Thanks for the offer. That’s cool that you’ve lived in different countries…I live on the south coast a few miles from Brighton.
RP - I’ll try and keep up with you, and Cal will try and keep up with me.
Mr MattM - PayPal please. And thank you.

I thought you saved that sofa bed for me! I was not able to make any reservations, so, I was counting on you my friend!
Of course, I have no chance to keep up with you - you are so much younger than me - have mercy on old guy!

Cal I have much respect for you after your performance at CIM 2019. I won’t forget you telling me to do it again in 30 years and I hope I’m able to pass the challenge along to young runner.

I was surprised that early bird prices for Melbourne were so high - AU$165 for the marathon. Definitely the most expensive one I've entered, although all the prices are going up fast thanks to the hoops local govt makes them jump through.
I had a light week after really hitting the wall last week. I felt pretty average on Monday, then on Wednesday I found it strangely difficult to hit the paces in the workout. Usually I go too fast but it took 5-6 reps before I got the pace down from 4:07/km pace to the target pace. Towards the end of the week I started feeling good, and yesterday on my (shorter) long run I felt great all the way. So hopefully I'm over that speed bump and can hit the next 3 weeks hard before heading into the taper.

Thanks RP - I don't think I said that, 30 years would be way too ambitious - how old would you be? 65? No, I probably said - 20 years. 30 years is way too much to ask for I cannot run sub 3 marathon since that CIM marathon you mentioned
Technically speaking, I ran 2:50 Revel marathon, but Mikkey would kill me if I counted it in
Steve - sounds like things are falling into place - definitely a good place to be. It's weird how some weeks a workout (or just any run) will feel like a struggle and then the next week you will smash the same one with no particular explanation why!
Me - Interesting 10km race today (Auckland 10k Champs). I started probably a little bit quick with the lead group, and backed off after around 1.5km or so. Unfortunately this put me in no-mans land so I had to work pretty hard on what was a fairly windy day. Surprisingly hot too, 19C / 66F and sunny which was a real shock to the system after training in temps more like 8-10C at 6am in the dark for the last few months.
On the plus side, I tend to need a rustbuster after a longer block of training. This was definitely it. I was around 25 seconds off my 10k road PB (set on the same course), so probably not too bad given the conditions. The splits were a bit messy and I had a few dark moments I had to battle through, but that was definitely a good test. I also had to dig it in hard towards the end with Tim Hitchcock bearing down on me but still had enough there to out-gas him with a good sprint to the line. Good reminder of the varying levels of 10k pain and their relative survivability - I thought I was battling on lap 3 of 5, but I wasn't REALLY battling until the second half of lap 5 and even then I managed to kick it up for a sprint finish the last 200m or so.
On the minus side, I definitely would've liked to be a little quicker. I was 30-40 seconds off Nick Moore and Greg Darbyshire who I thought I'd be closer to given I've had 3 months of pretty good training, but they stuck with that lead group for longer and were probably all a little more acclimatised to the heat than me (and most had raced more recently). However I think I made a tactically bad decision there and should actually have stayed with the lead group for longer... I may have faded a bit more but I think the benefit of being in the pack would've outweighed that.
Official time for the front page was 33:42
(and yes, the course has been officially measured... it was actually the National Champs course in 2019-20. For some reason GPS is all over the show here and I've seen everything from 9.9km to 10.4km in the past)
So I think main learnings for Nationals in 2 weeks are...
(1) Race smarter. If conditions are good, start a little more conservatively. If conditions are windy, don't be afraid to stick with a group that's going a little quick because it's probably better than being isolated. There will be no chance of it being that warm in Wellington but it could be windy.
(2) There are depths of 10k hurt and I'd probably forgotten them. Be prepared to suffer a bit more because it wasn't actually that bad until right near the end.
(3) Relax! After lap 2, my wife (who knows very little about running but is a good reader of my body language) yelled at me to relax. It was great advice. Lot of work stress lately which doesn't help either.

Steve - That’s an interesting workout to get the legs going and quite a bit of cardio with the short recoveries.
Mark - stress really can destroy a race as you tighten up and spend a lot of extra energy.
Good job on the 10k and that was a nice rust buster.
me - A nice week with a race course recon on Thursday to check that nasty hill. It's really bad for 600m then carries on for another 800m with a bit less grade, overall gaining 60m/200ft over 1400m 0.9 mi. I'll probably run over there more times over the next few weeks just to get the body used to running up that hill. On race day I'd hope I don't lose more than 90 seconds on that uphill and then gradually recover that over the rest of the course.
I also need to be smart going up that hill that I don't kill my hips otherwise I won't be able to accelerate the rest of the way.
The final half mile is downhill on a gorgeous 2 lane avenue leading to the stadium, then a lap around the stadium with a fantastic view of the city. It sounds like it's gonna be a fun race and I'll probably do a few of these as I wait to shed the weight off.
I'm currently 86kg, up 9kg from when I raced the marathon last October and 5kg heavier than when I ran my PRs March last year. It's annoying that I gain weight so quickly though I'm sure I can't really complain given what I've been eating lately. I just eat bigger portions than most people. It's been better lately as I've added more and more protein but it's still an issue.
When I hear people state that they don't need to watch their diet I just figure they eat the same amount as a small bird 😂
On the bright side I had some decent elevation this week and the body is definitely getting stronger.
This week I was able to deadlift 3x3 with 60kg.

Well at least it wasn’t a short course!
I honestly think RP will age like a fine wine and get faster when he’s in his 40’s.
Maybe it was 20. I, after doing some quick math in my head, was 35 at CIM 2019. So at 55-56 running a sub 3 I can try to pass on the challenge. You’re still welcome to join at the finish line.
I’m guessing I’ve run around 100 or so road races (41 marathons) and the ONLY time my Garmin ever showed a short distance was the Brighton Half in 2015. It was flagged and proven to be 146m short.
RIP Milkman
I've probably run maybe 30 since I've paid attention to course certifications and I've never seen it. Most people show very long on a certified course because people are bad at running tangents. You do occasionally see 1 or 2 out of maybe 100 because of some wonky GPS stuff, but it's obvious looking at their runs. The 2019 cherry blossom disaster was another one that comes to mind where some people on letsrun were trying to justify it but then it ended up being 200 feet short.

Yep, I would personally rather run a course that was proven to be too long rather than too short (which has happened to me before) Luckily in the UK there is no bullshit and my 2015 Brighton half is void and actually states that the course was 146m short on my records.
Mikkey-So you're saying we should send our course measurers out to NZ?
Mark-Nice loosener, what time are you hoping for in the nationals?
Rough day today, couldn't quite get going and fell a couple of minutes short of my target,it was along the coast and a bit of wind but wouldn't have affected it that much.Hope the taper gets something back on the legs.

That 10k course has been measured or checked by multiple AIMS measurers. It's a regional champs course so it has to be measured, and it hosted National Champs in 2019 and 2021 where they will always remeasure existing courses. I've run that course 4 times and it's measured 10.1, 10.2, 10.1, 9.9 so it was clearly errant GPS yesterday.
JMac and Mikkey try to gaslight me on this because some of the more casual events in NZ sometimes have short courses. JMac got very upset that my 10k summer fun series had a short course back in February, which was strange because it was a summer fun run series and literally no one cared. He even posted a rant in the Waltons thread that he later deleted. Very weird.
