jhudak55: Yeah I don't have anything nearby that is flat except a couple of rail trails. Those are covered in ice right now. While in general I prefer the hills, woods, farmland, etc., I do occasionally like to hit something flat for workouts, pacing and long runs. Hopefully as my long runs get longer I will have the opportunity to get on the RTs.
Next Races: Fools Run 10 mile (4/2/22), York Marathon (5/15/2214/23), Stupid Marathon TT (June 2022)
jhudak55: Nice week. I agree that being patient for speed to come in workouts is smart. Just have to keep putting in the work and let the body respond.
DW: Enjoy the normal feeling running for a while, hoping it lasts a long time or leads to good solutions for you. Another solid week of training for you. Kudos on the consistency.
Jmac: Have you historically felt tired if you're staying in the same zone for all your runs? I know sometimes just running easy everyday starts to drain my body and I need a change of pace.
Fishy: Nice week. That's a lot of time on feet. Way to go. I'm sure it's going to pay off down the road.
Hermosa: Nice week as well
13 miles of running for me. An up and down week for sure. Felt pretty good Tuesday and Wednesday and was able to run about 5 minutes longer than previous week, but the remainder of the week went the other way. Had more tightness/soreness so had to rest from running. Got on the bike a few times this week and completed some HIT workouts as well. I hate to say this, but I think I'm enjoying the time on the bike. Going to have to continue to be patient and likely not run 2 days in a row until I have more significant improvement. Also thinking about just not running at all this week. We'll see. One day at a time.
Road Mile: 5:19 (2017), 5k: 17:09 (2021), 10k: 35:54 (2021), HM: 1:21:55 (2020), M: 2:53:18 (2021)
jhud the plan was a down week, but the race going down and front loading mileage to "prep" for the storm I overshot my goal a little. I do like to run a lot and the added miles are starting to get rid of a couple of pounds I'd like to shed before April. I do need a step-back week however...
Fishy: Wasn't this supposed to be a down week? Did you keep mileage high after the 16 miler was cancelled?
5K 18:36 (2023), 10K 39:40 (2022), 1/2 1:24:37 (2023), full 2:58:36 (2015)
Cobra Commander Keen
Brook, Hermosa, DWave, JHud - Nice weeks.
DWave - Once again, I'm really glad the injection worked so well.
Fishy - Another big week, awesome.
Ace - Sorry for the apparently lack of progress. Hopefully that turns around for you.
Had a planned cutback in mileage last week, which also provided a tiny bit of taper for my trail 20k. That was a TON of fun, though I do now know where all those stabilizers I don't typically use as much are located. Just a bit of soreness still lingering, particularly when I've been sitting and not moving. No pain or need to adjust my stride while running.

The omicron cold variant is so deadly in NZ that the PM will force household covid contacts to isolate for 24 days! ππ€‘
I saw this and laughed because the Prime Minister of Canada somehow acquired it just a day or two before a massive semi truck ralley was organized to show up at his office. He opted to quarantine at home. They should probably visit New York and get some paperwork. Same state covered up the deaths in nursing homes caused by COVID 19 positive patients (Governor ordered), while the Governor wrote a book about how great he'd handled COVID 19. I think this Governor is isolating now.
Marby man 3 years ago seems like so long ago. I wasn't even a sub 3 marathoner 3 years ago.
JMac Isn't there a race in April with miserable weather you like to complain about? You see my covid 19 trigger up there? Perhaps I need COVID to stick around another training cycle.
ace you want me to run a sub 2 FIFTY!?!!?! shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit....these standards are pretty demanding. I hope the achellies and ankle start improving. It's not TOO late to still get a great race in Napa.
Hermosaboy nice paces. AS for putting more logs on the fire for a long run shouldn't a long run be just about time on feet and getting it done? You have some blazing fast paces.
Darkwave glad you're back to being able to enjoy a run. While I don't know what it's like to PHYSICALLY worry about a run, MENTALLY I'm aware of how nice it is to "just go run" and it reminds me of all the times I've NOT enjoyed running because it was a workout or the focus was an upcoming race. I hope it lasts longer than 3 weeks, and maybe triggers some neurons to start firing properly. Having wet brakes and running on a closed track as if it was a rocky mountainous single track sounds horrible.
Fishyone I think the 16 miler 6 days before the 20 miler will be okay. It might hurt more mentally going into it than physically. As a point of reference I HATE 20 milers, and found a few during my last cycle were enjoyable. I was doing 14+ mile long runs at least once a week and the long weekend runs were just time on feet. Perhaps you can find a new route to see new things, or see things you like. I know locally there is a house with a soccer field I like to see (16 miler mandatory) along with a house with a bunch of peacocks that are entertaining to see.
MyWeek:
I went for vertical gain this week. I'm also still playing around with the Garmin Fenix 6. There are a LOT of settings and a bunch of data this watch can show. 1/26 was the first time I'd done intervals on a trail, and it was actually suggested as a training run years ago from SeattleMax before I was a trail runner. 1/27 was a BAD day at work, and was about to be another 1,800 ft elevation gain (summit is around 6,300 ft) until I encountered a man with a Jeep he'd tricked out for rock crawling and off roading. We chatted for a literal hour about anything Jeep and it was the nicest conversation I'd ever had. To say this guy looked white trash was an understatement and it put a smile on my face after knowing my boss has a college degree and the attitude of a dickhead towards me.
1/29 was another hill repeat run. Ran with my usual Saturday buddy who said we were consistent in the uphills. I don't know if I set the pace, or he did but we were about 4 seconds off between reps. About 750 ft of gain in 2.75 miles according to Strava.
1/30 was to keep the streak alive (56 DAYS!) and seriously, the weather changed that much in just a few hours. -9.4C to 8.3C. Also picked up a few missing streets in my "run every street" thing. Unsure when this will finish, and I have it all stored in Google Earth so when it's done it's done. There is a fair amountof running on dirt roads at 6,300 ft required for it to be complete.
Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

I tend to look at all workouts (including recovery runs) as all logs for the fire. Once we get them all going -- hoping to turn it into a good burn on race day. Probably not the greatest description.
And you can quote me as saying I was mis-quoted. Groucho Marx
Rob
I totally get it.
RIP Milkman
Fishy - I learned the hard way with Daniels last year. I was feeling SO strong that my cut back weeks were not enough. I learned with him that you need to cut down to 70% mileage every 4 weeks. I was doing only 80%, and every 5 weeks. It cost me a possible PR. Be careful.
RP - 56 days! I can't believe your commitment has been so strong post CIM.
Keen - I saw that weather forecast in the other thread (Weatherunderground, nice choice). That looks like a Boston in April type forecast, that is nuts! We never see that kind of volatility in temps.
Ace - never thought about that one pace idea, that's very interesting and may be the cause. Sorry about your week.
Jhud - do you plan on any interim races? I'd be curious to see where your fitness is at.
Hermosa - I assume those numbers are minutes and not miles, otherwise that would be an insane workout.
Coach - do you run in plain shoes or use any sort of grip (screws, yaktrax, etc.)
5K: 16:37 (11/20) | 10K: 34:49 (10/19) | HM: 1:14:57 (5/22) | FM: 2:36:31 (12/19)
I can only wish I could do that workout in miles!!!
JMac - Nothing special here. If the snow is deep I often swap to my trail shoes (Altra Superiors). It's rare that I don't hit pavement at some point so those other options are annoying for that.
Jmac: I'm running a small 5k on 2/27 for that exact purpose. Hopefully I'll be in PR shape by then, but it will be a good test regardless.
JMac- thanks for the advice. Looks like the weather will necessitate some sort of cutback. None of the paths/sidewalks I run on are close to clear enough to do any sort of workout. Just made some screw-shoes for my morning commute and 9+ minute pace felt like a sprint....not sure what's worse slush or frozen slush
JMac it is actually impressive what I can accomplish when I want to, and have no outside influence. It is actually unacceptable for work, or anything negative, to ruin my running streak for me so it's ALMOST like I'm saying "fuck YOU" to all the things trying to ruin it. It reminds me of when commanderkeen told me not to bail on a run until I'm fully dressed, and I extended it to "you can't bail until the first mile." I think my wife is wondering how long I'll do it or how I'll be able to keep it up.
oh yeah, wife looked up plane tickets to Washington. 5 months from now. $1,200 USD for two adults. Possibly due to living where I live, and possibly due to "what in the fucking FUCK!"
It reminds me of when commanderkeen told me not to bail on a run until I'm fully dressed, and I extended it to "you can't bail until the first mile."
That is such good advice. Yesterday I sat with all my clothing on and just kept saying "I don't want to do this at all." But once I was running, I was so happy I was out there.
I think out of all the runs I haven't wanted to do, only a handful have I ended it and still said "yeah I shouldn't have bothered with that."
Mother of Cats
I find that the shorter the run, the harder I find it to get out there. If I've got a longer run, then I'll discipline myself to start so that I'm done at a reasonable time. But if it's just 3-5 miles, I'll procrastinate and procrastinate.
Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.
And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.
