It's Tuesday every day

Just sending out bib for Philly.  Bib # 1536

Taper madness is official.  Thought I felt a little sore throat this morning...

My heart rate went up just looking at the webpage. Fishy, good luck!

    RIP Milkman

Steve - good catch, it was supposed to be 2:44:59. You're right, in retrospect my body was trying to tell me to slow down but I thought I just wasn't pushing enough. It's kind of stupid because I've run so many marathons, you would think I would know that I don't tend to get lazy that early in a marathon. Stupid mistake. But it's a good lesson that you can run so many races and still learn something new about yourself.

The NYC course is definitely hard. I think it's easier for me just because I know exactly what to expect having run it 4 times (plus living here). But I read a lot of race reports where the Queensboro bridge really killed people this year. You have to be mentally prepared for it: it's a complete grind, but it's not like you're climbing a mountain. It's just hard to have to have to run up a bridge for a mile straight.

The 5th Ave mile is probably the worst part. The thing is, everyone was already toast by that point that I don't think it mattered that much this year. It matters a lot more when you're cruising along.

I'm pretty damn excited though if you, Keen, and RP all make it for 2024. Unlike Mikkey I won't get you guys drunk a couple of days before. We'll save the beers for post race. I feel like darkwave hasn't run NYC either, but I could be way off. If not, we need to corral her into this as well. Cal hasn't either, and neither has Dave. Hell, even JT hasn't run it.

Sooooo....I think we need everyone to run NYC 2024???

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and comments.

Jmac- Thanks for posting the recap.  It was tough to read.  Amazing how it can go south so quickly.  I'm still very impressed with your time and the guts it took just to run it out.  I know it's no consolation and doesn't help but really think you did well under the circumstances.

Weather looks ideal so now it's time to get to work! I do seem to have a mild cold which is really annoying but so be it.

Now the book mentioned a product created specifically to handle cramps: https://teamhotshot.com/products/hotshot-6-pack

It contains said ginger, cinnamon and capsaicin and promises to stop a cramp in as little as 90 seconds.

Anybody ever heard of that ?

It seems easy enough to carry, though I'm not sure I can handle that much capsaicin (chilli pepper).

My week done a little early.  Daughter has a trip with her scout group tomorrow so no chance I'll be getting a long run in early.  Another fun forest adventure this morning, this time I ran the correct loop.  We had some pretty heavy rain yesterday so there was quite a lot of puddle hopping and soft parts on the northern part of the loop - all good trail running practice but the legs are feeling it now.  The highlight was definitely when I was battling my way up Murder Hill and was almost at the top and a guy on the way down gave me a high five.  It's a tough hill as the name suggests.

NYC Qualifier is my goal for 2023. Ideally I'll get it at Boston. The default back up  would most likely be CIM. I might be able to run a certified half marathon if I don't get it at Boston.

Unsure if I'll bring kids. 2024 would be an almost 7 year old and a....*does math*...he was born iinnnnnnnn.....4.75 year old.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Definitely on my list to do at some point...maybe 50/50 for 2024. I guess I have about 3 months to decide convince my wife.

Just tell her you signed up for the 50 and do the 100 5k and then run the marathon.

                      Problem Child

An amazing day for me. Official time 3:17:48, which is a 4:28 PR. So huge for me considering I felt like I had plateaued, after 10 years of marathoning and 17 races, at age 57. I chained myself to the 3:20 pacer until 19-20, then got in front of them and ran my  own race from there. Felt strong throughout, and really poured it on at the end—overall avg was 7:33, final 2k was at 6:48. Can’t tell you how happy this makes me.

So all you need is ANOTHER PR (I'm assuming you're in the 50-54 age range for 2024) by about 4 minutes, to be safe, and you're totally in. Sounds like a logical goal for 2023. Just don't stop to pee at CIM.

OK, I'm an idiot and I was thinking 2023. But I guess 2024 is alternatively possible.

I am in the 55-59 AG, so only need a 3:23 or 1:36 HM. So I'm in for 2023. I assume if I wanted to do 2024, I'd still be able to run a qualifier next year. That half time is a particularly low bar.

I'm actually surprised they didn't make it harder for 2023. Anecdotally, it sounds like time qualifiers are selling out within the first hour of the first day of registration. It used to be you had a week or so before they sold out. I'm going to shoot for that half qualifier in a NYRR race next year so that I'm guaranteed entry. But either way, I'd say be prepared for it to get a couple of minutes harder in 2024

I'm liking this idea as well.  I'll be 50 in 2024, and so my qualifying times are 3:51 and 1:49.

Assuming no change in those, I may sign up for a NYRR half at some point in 2023 to get the guaranteed qualifier.
