RIP Milkman

Great report Kyle, it's true watching footage of sub 3 finishers looking slow. Mind you most people are getting pretty ragged by the finish.

I've watched videos of myself running my 236 pace and it looks like just a brisk jog. You ever watch pros in person running sub 5? That's what we think we look like because it looks more like 6:30 pace!

Loved the race report.  On a much much smaller scale, it reminded me of the Waterfront Half.  In 2019 I was hurting but not as bad as 2018 "oh good, I've passed the place where I collapsed".  I love that you now have good memories.  Also really really like your signature.  PRs (almost) all in the current year.  You're in the form of your life.  I think I speak for piwi here when I say we want to see you and Jenny from Florida in a photo/video.

I'll say this before Mikkey does.  I think it's a mild cold regardless of "vaccines".  Sorry Mark that you missed this big step out of your comfort zone.  You're committed to Southern Lakes again right?  What else have you got for 2023?

Mikkey - Just confirming, because it's very hard to tell from your posts, do you have a Moose Mug...

Back in the day (longboat will know) there used to be a Competitive Jerks Sub2:40/Moose Mug thread!  The only way anyone on here is going to win a MM is if they become non binary which would allow an extra 20min…and even that would be a challenge!

Thats exciting news about working with your new coach and the additional strength training. Just out of interest what are the 3 new dumbbell exercises he wants you to do?  I love going to the gym, but I think I’ve got pretty much everything I need at home which doesn’t take up that much space, fitness bench, dumbbells, kettlebells, hex bar for deadlifts, TRX suspension trainer etc.

Keen - Well now you left me wondering how are race starts in the Southern state of Oklahoma.
I suppose there's a salvo of cannon shots at first, then every runner takes their gun out and takes a shot at the sky and then they start their race 😂
Thanks for the race report, it sounds to me like you gave your absolute best on race day 💪
Though it sucks all of this recovery post race, I'm sure you will be at your porch in 40 years telling anyone who comes by about this one race.

Steve - Heh, I don't follow much, and I have a considerable disdain for the current generation of Brazilian players, especially Neymar, who is, putting it in the mildest terms I can, not a cool person.

Mikkey - That sounds like an excellent setup for strength training at your home, the only thing missing is a pull up bar of a place to hang from.

Also, you've just joined me in Jmac's little book of revenge (Aria Stark style).
I've joined when I said he was a sissy for feeling cold in 10C a few years ago.
And now you're saying nobody here can get a moose mug when he's like a minute away from getting it, I'm sure his marathoning retirement is now indefinitely suspended until he can make you eat crow 😈

Trying to catch up on some things.

I started feeling better yesterday evening and that has continued this morning, which I'm thrilled about.

I've also been having multiple rather vivid dreams the past few nights. Is this what happens when I'm not super-tired from high mileage, or maybe just sleeping longer per night? Weird.

JMac - Congratulations on your increased progeny count. How's DD1 taking it?

Flavio - Some races use a horn, some a starter pistol, and there's an RD who uses a shotgun (with blanks, of course!). Even in the cities it's likely that there are a good number of defensive firearms locked in participants vehicles.

No açai bowl before the race. I was going to try it, but the place I remembered from last year was still "temporarily closed". I only just found out that the juice bar 50m from my hotel also did açai bowls.

Steve - I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress with the new coach.

RP - I could totally get you in contact with my coach. He'd probably get a kick out of the competitiveness between us.

Mark - Sorry about the big and missing the race. Doing any better?

Mikkey - We can't all be you but we can try.  I'm starting off slowly with single leg swinging bridges, Bulgarian squat and calf raises.  I already do some squats, lunges and bridges but it's more targeted now.

Flavio - I tend to agree on Neymar.  I still remember the spectacle in 2014 when he was taken out badly then in the next match the Brazilian players had his shirt at the anthems and were in tears..yes, it was a bad injury and terrible challenge but if you don't focus on the game you see what happens.  They were down 5-0 after about 30 mins against Germany.  I'm kind of hoping England get back into this game against France.  They need to get their hopes up as much as possible to increase the heartbreak when it goes wrong.

My week was good, biggest week since Melbourne and feeling really good.  I'm using the full range of my easy zone depending on winds and hills yesterday.  I've been guilty of keeping an even easy pace sometimes when it's not warranted.  It was about 25C after 30 mins yesterday when the sun came through and I was covered in salt by the end but no signs of cramp thankfully.

                It's Tuesday every day

                  Hello! So much happening here...

Keen: fabulous race report, so happy for you, especially that you went back and wreaked revenge on the CIM course! Takes a lot of cojones to get back on the horse like that.

Jmac: congrats on your new daughter!!!

Marky_mark: I'm sorry the race didn't work out. Stupid non-stop illnesses (speaking in general, not about you).

SteveChCh: best of luck with the new coach! The two times I worked with good coaches I improved a lot, and fast. (FWIW, there have been a number of other coaching situations that just didn't work out... it's trial and error.)

Me: Eh, I'd give the week a B... okay, a B+: I got all the miles done (for me, the metric), but my knees got cranky (impeded speedwork) and I managed one squat workout instead of 2-3: (life schedule):

65.8 mi @ 9:46 min/mi pace, with a 17-mi LR @ 9:36 min/mi, one speedwork (SW) session of 4*(4' hard/2' jog), one leg session of [25*(130 lb) squat/leg presses, 25 pretty-much-unweighted hamstring curls (mostly for range of motion/warmup), and 15 hip extensions], plus one set of 20 hip extensions on another day.

That first SW session was Wed. I started another on Fri but my knee didn't like the setup at all (slight downhill, slight road camber, pretty cold) and I abandoned after the first rep. May have to stick to flat stuff to do that for now.

I've been managing arthritis in that knee for nearly 20 years. There are long periods of time when it's fine, and then periods when it gets surly. One of my running hecklers.

                  Have a great week!

I have no affiliation with any team in this tournament.  It looks like France now, but I'd love to see Morocco continue their dream run all the way.

Is Harry Kane better off staying in Qatar now?  I feel sorry for him, even though he plays for Spurs.

I'll say this before Mikkey does.  I think it's a mild cold regardless of "vaccines".  Sorry Mark that you missed this big step out of your comfort zone.  You're committed to Southern Lakes again right?  What else have you got for 2023?

Yeah I mean there's always been viruses going around and always will be.  Still testing negative but feeling quite a lot better today (thanks all) so back to running tomorrow I think.  I've had more colds this year than in a long while, possibly something to do with extended lockdowns I suspect.  Annoyingly I looked at the results and I would've been a reasonable chance of winning.  Oh well.

Anyways plan for 2023 is Clevedon HM in early Feb (terrible time of year to run a half, but it's a new race with some nice countryside running and goes past my old house), Waterfront HM in early April, building to Southern Lakes in May.  I'm giving serious thought to the Xterra trail series through winter.  It'd be nice to try something different and the winter options are basically that or club XC season.  I figure if you're gonna run offroad, trails are a helluva lot more interesting than running laps around a paddock.

Keen - excellent RR.  Long straights at the end are rough in a HM (Steve might remember the final straight in Christchurch... that went on for ever ESPECIALLY into the wind) so I can only imagine a marathon.

Not posting my week as it ended up at a miserable 29km.  However, it appears my decision to not run while I was feeling sick may have been the right one.

Steve - LOL, it seems you got your desire fulfilled, England tied then lost near the end.
Also don't worry about saying that in Belfast, they don't speak English there 🤡

Ch17 - How do you split those 25 reps, is it 5x5 ?

Mikkey - I like them all, but I'd love to see Morocco become the champions, even though I know they'll most likely all cramp up and lose to France as the Frenchmen can still run and they cannot.

me - This week was interesting, and as usual the long run was by far the hardest part. It did feel slightly better than last week's long run where I felt like I was completely depleted of energy, but it was still a hard battle in those last 25 minutes.

I tried eating a banana about 30 minutes before going out and ended up with a fully bloated stomach, very unpleasant throughout.
