Mark- I felt a little injured by your comment...I just broke out my rat terrier's winter wardrobe which include many sweaters including an "ugly christmas" sweater.  She's 15 pounds of fury and tries to prove it by fighting rottwielers and pitbulls on every walk.

I grew up with German Shepherds so I will freely admit that my views on this are probably quite biased towards large long-haired breeds.

(by this I mean that we had German Shepherds in my house when I was growing up, not that I was actually raised by German Shepherds lol)

Lol. That would have explained your desire to RUN fast!  I always had big dogs before my current 2. My other is a puggle.  Never say never but I may have become a small dog person.  No company on the runs however.

Keen - Good luck in your new role as the thread Overlord. Thanks for your work this year, JMac.

i can't help but jump in here and share a saying that used to be fairly popular in these parts (the upper midwest)...

"friends are friends, and pals are pals, but buddies sleep together."

            so...?!

My week was pretty good - good speed session on Wednesday which felt pretty good.  I met with my new coach for the first time on Thursday and he said we won't be doing much work at marathon pace (he calls it the gray zone but will now be calling it the dead zone) so I changed the pace of my 2km blocks for Saturday to aerobic threshold.  I've got the first 3 weeks of his training plan coming up - some minor changes to my week but pretty similar to what I've been doing.  He's removed my Monday strides session - said it's pretty pointless since he wants to focus on some lactate threshold work before I head into the marathon block, but may be added back in when I'm doing more endurance work.

My heart rate monitor must be coming in from Neptune because it may not arrive before the planned 5km race on new years eve.  If it doesn't I may need to borrow one or reschedule the race, because the point of it is to get a heart rate baseline.  I've also added some B races to my sig.  There seems to be some confusion on the online forums as to whether my watch is even compatible with it (Forerunner 35), although there's a youtube video showing how to pair them so surely it is.  I didn't think I got a budget watch but there seems to be missing features like downloading my workouts from Training Peaks on to the watch so I don't need to remember them.  Annoying.

Anyway, my goal of 4000km for the year looks set to happen on Wednesday.

Oh well, I guess that's it for now. I'm not going to run a marathon this year anyway .

And here's my 2022 in review:

My year started with a BANG, rather a negative BANG as I got covid and it was not the sniffles. I developed an annoying laringitis that left me mute for a few days. I didn't think it was smart to run with that, so I took 2 weeks off. But covid also sapped 100% of my muscular endurance, so I had to start back with meagre 3 or 4 km runs.

I raced a 5k on Feb 13th when in Brazil and I could barely break 20, though to be fair it was a very warm day approaching 80 degrees F at 6:30 am.

A week later on Feb 20th I raced a cross country race on yet another very hot day. The course was super fun though and it was very humbling to race it so out of shape.

Fast forward 3 months to May 8th and I raced a tune up half on yet again another warm day, but I still managed to run sub 1h30 which made me a bit happy to be back on the way to recovery.

I then jumped on a short training block for a 1500m race on June 18th. It was the national master champs and I couldn't miss it as the 1500m is by FAR my favorite race. Training went okay, though I ran a disappointing 5min02 after going out too fast the first 300.

I was also 3rd to last on this race which shows that the field was quite strong for the amateur scene.

I went back to the drawing board and hired a coach as at this point I felt like I was finally running around 50km per week (31miles) and it started to make sense to have a coach. The coach did great and I had an excellent performance at my next race. A very hilly 10k race on Sep 25th. I was thinking of running sub 42 on the days leading to the race with a dream goal of running sub 40 and guaranteeing sub elite placement on my target 10k race about 40 days later.

I ended up running just under 40 minutes and I was very elated post race. I told my coach I thought I would be in around 38:30  shape on the  flat and I went into my target 10k race on November 06th feeling very confident. So confident in fact that I was targeting my 10k PR, which by now was very very soft, of 38:12. The course ended up being long at 10200m so I said "screw it" and took the 10k GPS time as my time for this race, which was a 38:01, which is now my official 10k PR.

Going into the next year, I have no idea what's going to happen as life can work in mysterious ways, but I have a pipe dream to somehow get back to my old form of 1h22 half and challenge my other PRs. If I manage to do that the challenge will be to keep that form and jump into a marathon training block, trying for the 5th time to beat the marathon. So far I'm 0x4 against it.

                    PRs: 1500 4:54.1 2019 - 5K 17:53 2023 - 10K 37:55 2023 - HM 1:21:59 2021

Up next: some 800m race (or time trials) / Also place in the top 20% in a trail race

FTR, I thought Tyson looked sweet (though he really did have that look of mischief), and the photo for the friend is a nice gesture, Mikkey. It maybe became a target of opportunity in the given context it was posted. Btw, being a cat owner, I think the danger to the tree and the sweater would have been much higher with my cat ;-)

Great week, Steve and nice news about the training! Though annoying about the HRM. Hope it comes in time for your NYE race! And hopefully it's possible to borrow one, since I'm sure you're anxious to get that baseline and start training accordingly.

Sounds like a rough start to the year, Flavio, but a good week all things considered. Being able to race in the national masters championships is really cool, and a strong showing despite the probably enduring effects of the illnesses. Hope you have a much better start in 2023 and can beat the marathon! Though going 1:22 1/2 is pretty freaking impressive as well.

I've been wondering about GPS versus course accuracy, and I was wondering what folks on here thought about that. I know a few people who take their GPS PRs as PRs, even on USATF certified courses. I guess it's fine if they then use that as their baseline to train harder... but unless a course really is measured long due to human error, wouldn't one adhere to the measured course time?

Well to each their own I guess, since we are all just hobbyjoggers. But for me, for a race, I edit my RA log entry to match the official race distance and time. That’s something you can do here, but not on Strava. I consider RA to be my log of record, and the PR list here to be my official one. There are a few exceptions where it was clear the course was measured or marked inaccurately; I leave those as is and check the box “exclude from PRs.”

Congrats Marky & Flavio on the 4000 km! Incidentally I just did the math and I project out to about 3950 km. Of course since I measure in miles, I haven’t been tracking this. I’d comment more but I’m now seeing we’re supposed to post some kind of year-end summary, so I’ll wait for that.
