JTReeves - looking solid as you build up. Having that long run really makes a difference in the weekly mileage. Thanks for sharing!

My week isn't worth posting as it started solidly but got derailed by a full blown sinus infection on Thursday making me miss most everything. Thankfully it never hit the chest and the sinus pressure is almost gone so  can resume running tomorrow.

Looks like the new guys have some talent and experience! Anyone here have experience leash training a dog for running? I run with mine most of the year but when it gets icy downhills get too scary for me.

      1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

        Name: Ace

        Age: 36

        Location: East TN

Life: Married with 3 kids (7,5,4), trying to work less and play more

Running History: Running off and on since middle school, did not run in college, returned to running in 2017 and have been fairly consistent since then. First marathon in 2011, swore off marathons but returned to them in 2017. Try to race anything from 5k to 50k. I do a mix of group runs and solo runs. I use a coach in town for my training and have for the last 3 years. I love it. Less thinking, more running. I'm terrible at cross-training, but trying (kind of) to get better.  I had a great 2021 as far as running goes. I raced two 5ks, two 10ks, two 15ks, a 10-miler, and a marathon and set a PR in every race this year. Most importantly, I didn't get injured this year!  I really love this sport and hope to continue it for a long time to come.

        Running Goals for 2022:

        1. Sub 2:50 marathon
        2. Sub 1:20 1/2 marathon
        3. Sub 17:00 5k
        4. Get more time on trails. Maybe do something stupid.

Expected 2022 Race: Napa Marathon (3/6, my brother lives in Napa), NY Marathon (have a qualifying time), and some local 5k to 13.1 races. I won a 10 miler and turkey trot 10k in 2021 and would like to go back and try to repeat those. Would love to try some cross country races in the fall if available.

I guess I post my past yearly miles here?

        2021 - 2107

        2020 - 1843

        2019 - 1778

2018 - 2018 (most importantly I beat RP to 2,000 and he graciously fulfilled his end of the bet and sent me some beer)

        2017 - 1590

Lastly, who has experience in registering for NY with a qualifying time? I've checked NYRR site, but have not found any clarity on registering with a qualifying time. Help appreciated.

Agreed - El G is the GOAT.... when it comes to middle distance. Track and XC it's still Bekele. He went undefeated for years in XC which is probably the hardest discipline to do so since it combines every top runner from every event. His dominance included both the short and long courses! For Marathon, for character, and for just being an all around GOAT... Kipchoge wins hands down.

Well said. It's amazing how old those WRs are from El G; only Kiprop came kinda close to the 1500, but then he was busted for PED use. What do you guys think about El G: was he clean or not? I'm skeptical, partly because of Morocco's record of athletes using PEDs, and partly because of how he retired so early and abruptly, right when testing for EPO was getting serious.

Second question: Do you think Jakob will be able to get the 1500 WR? Still has to cut ~2.3 seconds which is an eternity at that pace, but he's young...

Coach: Took a look at the York marathon and it looks nice; my only concern would be the weather mid-May in PA; may be on the warm side?

Thoughts on El G's clean record: Is it possible he doped? Yes. Sadly the testing wasn't that good back then. However, he was tested A LOT and never really had any serious questions or doubts. Not only that, but his body was a freak of nature. At his height of 5'9" he had the legs of a guy nearly 6'2" and same with his lung size/capacity. He only weighed in at 128 lbs too because his torso/upper body were so small. He was all legs, lungs and heart. Watching him kick near 50 flat for the last 1/4 in a 1500 or mile... poetry.

Jakob will never break the record as long as he is clean. He is strong, but that record has stood despite some guys who have better pedigees, bodies and mechanics. Yeah he is good, but not that good.

As for the York Marathon, typically temps aren't too bad topping out in the low to mid 60's at most during that time of day. Often we get temps that won't crest the 50s. Yeah, ideally it would be 40's for me though :-)

DW The Flying Finn? I mean what he did was crazy but I didn't think any of his records stood that long but he was absurdly dominant in his time. He was just the one who introduced everyone to stupid levels of intervals. I find it really hard to compare across multiple generations.

Regarding doping... I've just been skeptical of everyone ever since I found out Lance and a large portion of the Tour De France was doping. Yeah, it's possible a lot of people area clean but I guess I don't have that faith, which is why none of these guys (or gals) are really "heroes" to me. I'm really hoping that Jakob can come close to the record, for the drama if nothing else. Did anyone watch his XC win last month? He looked effortless out there. I'm hoping he moves up in distance at some point, I think he'd be a hell of a 5k-HM runner.

Hermosa 50 miles on the treadmill?? I'm sorry. or maybe I'm just not mentally tough enough for that. Treadmill running just feels unnatural to me; I can't get my mind off where the front of it is, and nevermind the fact that all the gym 'mills have a TV mounted on them so close that it's the only thing I can see.

Decent week of training. Poor week of reading the thread.

Tuesday's workout of 3 x 1600 was okay. Ran at 2pm due to travel that day. Had 15-25 MPH winds so dealing with pacing on a track was tough with the big tailwind on the back stretch and getting the headwind to finish each lap. Legs are feeling decent. Next race is a 10 miler on 1/15.

hermosa: I don't think I've ran 50 treadmill miles in the last 2 years, but I also do not live in MN.

Yeah zebano and AceHarris - I am crazy. But as I have gotten older the risk of falling on ice seems to be a lot more frightening than shutting off my brain to run on a treadmill.

I have a nice setup in my basement and can watch just about anything on a 50 inch TV that is an appropriate distance in front of me. Quite often, I will fast forward into a broadcast of a race and put myself into it to finish at the same time...

This week was actually a big bigger than I had thought it would be. It certainly felt good to get a bit of a LR in. I moved it to Sunday because Saturday morning it was just above freezing temps, rainy, and windy. In exchange I ended up doing it in sub-0 wind chill Sunday, but that was much more pleasant than the rain would have been (despite having the right gear for those conditions).

                            Problem Child

ace 25 mph winds are just so weird for me to train in. Mostly from a "I'll never get this on race day" aspect, then when it happens all I can think is "I don't even know what to do with this kind of a boost. Like...I haven't trained for it so I don't know if I run 10 seconds per mile faster, or just run goal race pace.

hermosa I have a friend who just picked up a nice treadmill last fall. He's growing into it and had a 20 miler planned. It can be helpful here not only for ice, but also smoke due to wildfires. Seriously, there was an entire month of marathon training in 2021 I lost due to air quality. It was probably the only time I wanted a treadmill and a fan. Otherwise I suffer with the outside elements. I've not injured myself on ice, and I'm still young (at heart) and dumb.

                              MY week

All easy feel running and just running what I wanted to for distance. mostly 1 hour "lunch" runs. Cold, so I had to layer up and remember I don't own enough winter clothing. I didn't even have a goal for weekly mileage, and this would have been a good mileage week I struggled to get during 2021 marathon training. Weird.

EDIT: I'm actually thinking, like my race report, "7 miles a day. 7 days a week. Would you like a calculator?"
