I did indeed-Loved the race, not posted on here in a while as I've been struggling the last year or so,but have been lurking all the time so didn't post a RR but hoping to get more regular now as I target Chicago in the Autumn.

        RIP Milkman

Wow Fishy, big week after Boston! Great work, hope you're feeling okay.

Darkwave great race report as always. That pacing must make you proud given you felt like you were falling apart a bit yet your pace kept picking up. I also didn't realize that race was downhill: looks very similar to CIM in terms of elevation. I was thinking of running it this year but opted not to: would you recommend it in the future?

My legs finally said enough this week. In the Daniels 2Q model, you generally run with 2-3 days of easy runs between workouts. However, I just did 5 straight quality days with only 2 days easy in between. This was the week where my legs caught up. I picked up a niggle in my hamstring during my VO2 max workout. Luckily it doesn't bother me when running easy, but I dropped all strides the rest of the week. I also didn't hit my goal pace in either workout. Not to worried though as I really think it's just the high fatigue.

This week I'll have a chance to get 3 days between both of my quality days, so that should restore some of my leg pop. Unfortunately, I'm heading down to Florida for the weekend. The unfortunate part is that it's been a very cool spring here in the Northeast (I think we've had maybe 2-3 days all of April that have been above average) and so I have absolutely 0 heat acclimation, yet the forecast for this weekend is low 90s during the day and mid 70s at dawn (I've run exactly 1 run above 70, and the dew point was 20 degrees for that one). Going from <100 TDP right to 150 TDP will be fun! I'll have to draw out some routes such that I can easily get to my car for water.

Speaking of Florida, it looks like weatherboy is really starting to come back now which is exciting! I'm not going to poke him to come back just yet but it would be great if he did.

Not that this in any way qualifies as a '2022 Advanced Marathoning Thread' post but...

I was able to run over 8 miles on consecutive days this weekend!  Given that I used to be able to run over 18 miles on consecutive days it is a little humbling, but still... it's progress!

The key seems to be the Brooks Ghost 13s.  They allow me to run without causing too much discomfort with the busted toe.  I'm stocking up on several pair in the hopes that I can continue to rebuild during the summer.  I doubt I'll ever get back to 100mpw, but if I can just get into the 50s consistently this year that would be amazing.

              My Week:

Just chillin. I signed up a while ago to pace a Half Marathon. Depending on how you want to count it I've streaked this race since inception. It's been taken over, and the course was changed this year by the new RD so either I start the streak over, or it's continuing. Pacing was tough because the first mile marker was short, and so were the first 5. We were 2:30 or more ahead of target time time heading into mile 6. No halfway turn around or marker and my GUESS put us at 1 hour exactly. It's a soul crushing uphill for 8-10 if you're racing this for a PR or top 3. The second pacer and I planned to give some time back (2:30 at 6 miles into a half marathon is A LOT ahead) to the course, and then we noticed we were only 30 seconds ahead. Mile 11 we were about 40 seconds ahead with a runner who latched on to us, then mile "12" put us right back to 2 minutes or more ahead. We crossed at 1:39:05 race time after running 20 seconds slower for the mile, and practically walking the last 200m (1/8 mile for the drag racing crowd). Course GPS MEASURED not even 13 miles. A few runners kept going for the full 13.10 to get their PR.

The nonsense thing (stupid is a bad word dad) is the race start could be moved back from where it's at to make the course 13 miles long. easily. I'd talked with the RD about the course changes, and I absolutely know the start/finish is picked because it's a big area conducive to an after party, with trophies, and booths. I will suggest they move the starting line farther back. I'd rather run a 13.25 mile GPS half marathon than one almost 400m (1/4 mile for the Americans) short. I'm not sure how it would work with the finish area at one spot, and the finish LINE at another. I'm not a race director, so it's easy to critque. Either they did a better job promoting the event, or people were just excited to get out and run because I think this was the biggest it's ever been.

My ONE gripe about the medal, is it could EASILY be a bottle opener if they just SLIGHTLY tweaked the length. I mean...it's right there.

effort vs energy was a dog walk. I hadn't taken him out in forever, and WFH ends for me very soon. Nonsense about COVID making it safe to return to work so we need to go by the official policy adopted by my office....after they said last year "WFH is not how we work and won't continue when this is over."  two years later I'm no longer capable of working from home because the rules changed. Yes. I'm bitter about it.

Fishy - I was looking at your week and thinking... how does he have so many more miles than me? I run 7-8 miles every day, and 15-16 on the weekend... then I realized you're doubling 😂 Nice week!

DW - 7 miles plus 1 at race pace, then 8x100 😲 two days before a race? Is that somewhat the equivalent of strides? I can't imagine doing 8x100 basically...ever. But I guess I don't know what effort you were doing. I could see doing 8 strides.

Jmac - "legs finally said enough" - I had the same feeling yesterday.

MattM - What happened to your toe? I must have joined the thread after you explained. Glad to hear you're able to rebuild!

RP - Nice pacing job. I can't STAND poorly marked/measured courses. There truly is no excuse. Well done on getting your group to the line just below the time regardless.

My week - Like JMac's, my legs said "enough" yesterday. It was warmer than it has been, but also I just felt kind of sluggish from the start on my long run. Goal was 2:15 for time and I guess I was thinking I'd get about 17 miles but I was a little short. I also very much wanted to give up starting around mile 12. But I suffered through and just kept slogging. Nothing in particular hurting - just tired and hot. Going to savor my scheduled rest day today.

Hey SC, about 8-9 years ago while on an early morning run (literally at sunrise) I was running along a sidewalk and did not notice one of the cement squares was raised about 2".  I was running in my racing flats and when my right foot was swinging through after the toe-off, my big toe went straight into the cement.  Immediate sharp pain and I did a tumble roll.  I got up and slow jogged back home (luckily only half-mile or so).  I had been training for a marathon that was only a month or so away, so I put off any treatment.

A couple of months later, when I realized it was not going to heal properly, I went to the foot specialist.  Xrays showed that it is now a 'compressed joint' meaning the big toe bone is now slightly under the joint socket, and the cartilage is gone.  The joint is slightly raised and offset toward the second toe.  The tendon is compressed and I cannot 'lift' the big toe like normal.  It lifts slightly and the tendon does not rise up like it should.  The 'fix' isn't really a fix (I don't think).  They can open it up and clean everything out, but the only option is fusing and to me that seems like it might be worse than the discomfort I feel now.

                  I should post a picture!

I can't get the image to post in the reply, so here's a link.  This is me raising my big toes.  The lump between the big toe and second toe is bone.  The tendon is almost undetectable.  I think I should get a pedicure.

Matt- That toe looks painful.  I had a soft tissue thing with the knuckle behind the big toe (dropped something on it moving) that ached/hurt for MONTHS so I'm sorry your dealing with that.

SC- I do love my doubles!  I've found them easier the more I do.  I'm to the point where I actually prefer the 7.5/7.5 double over the 13 MLR.

DW- Nice work and finishing with the fastest 2 miles

RP Nice work pacing on a difficult course made worse by the poor measurement!  I think JMac meant he had done 5 straight workouts wiht only 2 days rest between not 5 workouts in a row!

JMac Feeling good thanks for asking.  Back issue mostly gone (hurts when I sit too long) and my legs appreciate the miles. I need to get a standing desk at work. I sit way too much!!

I did a half-assed race report for Boston (first ever RR).  I don't have a blog or personal website so what is the preferred method for making it available for anyone who may want to read?

                        Problem Child

SC COULD any of the "sluggish" feeling be exhaustion from training? I almost posted on Strava yesterday, but didn't because I thought I'd bring it here. I know a week or 2 ago you were "hay in the barn" mentality and it popped into my head when I saw your run. Perhaps there is still some fitness gains to be had before race day.

And yeah, poorly marked courses suck. I JOKED with the RD on strava about his 9 mile run along the course (marking HM) as "My half marathon PR thanks you" and then it ends up being this short. When the race was first established and I ran it almost everyone was under 13 miles, and the conversation of "GPS accuracy vs course" came up. Needless to say the GPS conversation came to mind yesterday as I'm trying to be close to a 1:40 than a 1:38.

fishy thanks. Being familiar with THIS course helps, BUT I didn't expect it to be short. Other pacer and I were glad we didn't adjust pace when we saw 2:30 ahead of goal time. I think it is a course designed for a positive split, and PERHAPS banking 20 seconds in the first 7 miles then "giving it back" over the 2 long uphill miles would work. My logic says once we summit the hill there would be gas in the tank for the mostly flat final miles.

Yes, absolutely. I'm sure it's mostly cumulative fatigue with a little bit of "the weather has been 48 degrees for a month and now it's 62 and sunny" non-acclimation.

I hope I'm still gaining fitness! To be fair, it wasn't THAT bad of a run. I've certainly had worse. Feeling pretty depleted today and glad to be taking a rest day for sure.

I hope I'm still gaining fitness! To be fair, it wasn't THAT bad of a run. I've certainly had worse. Feeling pretty depleted today and glad to be taking a rest day for sure.

When it starts getting warmer it messes with me pretty badly too for the first couple of weeks. Especially if it's humid, which is always here in DelMarVa. I'm to the point now where if it's bad enough I just say fuck it and go to the gym to use the treadmill. Quality is more important to me than telling myself I toughed out the weather. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't done York but I know a lot who have, and they all rated it pretty highly, think there's a hill around 20 they didn't like but other than that they enjoyed it.

Just booked a few days away in Prague that just happened to coincide with the Prague 10k so will enter that.
