They were both bad races and I would like to forget both.
Maybe. But I seem to remember a story somewhere about how maybe that 2:28 turned out to be a sacrificial lamb that was redeemed for a 30:XX 10,000m, a race that will always be hard to regret. No?

In my book 3:59:55 rounds to 3:60 . I can see why you want to keep the 'seconds'!!
I had no business running a marathon and knew ABSOLUTELY nothing about pacing, nutrition, etc. I worked HARD to gut out those seconds after bonking something serious...
And you can quote me as saying I was mis-quoted. Groucho Marx

First: 3:26:05 (2008)
PR: 2:55:08 (2011)
First one in 2011: 4:55:00(ish)
Second in 2012: 4:48:00(ish)
Third one in 2013: 3:59:27. And indeed, those seconds are important in some cases. A 3:59:27 finish is VASTLY better than a 4:00:01 finish. (Because any sub-hour breakthrough is like breaking the sound barrier or something, don't you know?)

Feeling the growl again
True. But I was greedy and wanted both.
It was totally my own fault, I got weak in the head and did a huge workout - for confidence - I did not need to do after the 10K and it pushed everything over the edge. Several years earlier the Olympian who was coaching me told me I could "play it safe" and run 2:24 or go for it, and I went for it (my only marathon DNF). So I had my shots I just did not convert.
When you are that young you keep thinking you have another shot next cycle, and sometimes you don't see when they are counting down.
The 2:53 was the classical over-confident first marathon learning experience.
