Running 2:56 two months after running 1:25 for a HM would, I think, count as successful.

100%, this is a brilliant result.  I'm honestly baffled that anyone would not think this is a successful marathon.  Seems like you need to be able to run a marathon at the same pace as your half to be successful to some people?

I converted 1:27 into 3:35.  I still put my 2 cents in about marathon training from time to time.  Just because I can't run one doesn't mean I can't spot obvious training mistakes.  Of course, it's unlikely that the people here who churn out great marathon results all the time would be doing anything wrong.

    Are we there, yet?

It's been an interesting recovery week.  Since I tried to return to normal too quickly after my previous race, I decided to experiment with a different approach.  Even as short as they were, I broke up some of my recovery runs to very short morning and evening runs to prevent me from pushing the distance up too soon.  Since that barely got me warmed up, it also kept me from picking up the pace too much.  So far it seems to be working, at least better than last time.

M: - morning 3 miles mostly walking; evening 1.5 miles walking and jogging
      T: - 2.3 miles mostly walking

W: - morning 3 miles short alternately walking and jogging; evening 2 miles short alternately walking and jogging

T: - 4 miles alternately walking and jogging with a few easy strides at maybe 10K pace

F: - 4.6 miles alternately walking and jogging with 6 easy 1:00 pickups at maybe 5K pace

S: - morning 2.5 miles alternately walking and jogging; evening 2 miles alternately walking and jogging

S: - 3.1 miles alternately walking and jogging with a few easy strides at maybe 10K pace

Total for the week: 28.2 miles / 45.4 km

Tomorrow plan to extend the distance to 6+ miles.

       2024 Races:

            03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles

            05/11 - D3 50K, 9:11:09
            06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour, 35.82 miles
            10/12 - Hainesport 12-Hour

AG is a different conversation.  But a 6 minute difference for non-elites is close enough to the same, you'd have to be a competitive jerk to care about 6 minutes   The trick is to run a few shockers then 6 minutes is nothing.

6 minutes.... 6 minutes is nothing Smile Even for the same age it is something for the marathon. What about age difference - was 2:56 marathon ran at the age of 53?  Or at the age of 40? Or at the age of 30? 6 minutes difference is 30 minutes difference between 55 years old and 30 years of old. AG is not a different conversation - it is scientifically proven conversation, not just buddy's talk.

Flavio - yes I think you can just show up, pay your $10, and you’re in. I agree I’d probably try the mile. It’s pretty wild for me since I never really train at anything faster than 5k pace. Although I did once run a mile time trial just to see how it would go. It was pretty much like you said, just a hair-on-fire mad dash. A lot of fun though—it’s over so fast. I can’t even imagine the 800.

I do commend you on knowing how to type accents on your keyboard, that's a lot for an English native speaker πŸ‘

I may come back to these easier achievements later in life, but at the moment I'm focused on a much harder challenge which is to run sub 2 minutes and 20 seconds on the 800m race.

I'm sorry to hear you were too afraid of speed to try the shorter distances. Just go to the local track and blast an 800m as fast as you can. I promise it won't bite you πŸ˜‡

The only time I’ve ever run a full on 800m sprint was late last year when Tyson somehow managed to get into a field full of sheep and started chasing them all.  I ran the length of the field in 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

2:56 for a marathon is really fast. At least to me it is.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

the final two miles of this REALLY fucking sucked and was ALMOST as bad as the climb on Tahoe Rim Traiil at Diamond peak Ski Resort.  At least I was kind of in shape this day.

RP - Excellent race, well done.

Steve - Nice week, and I'm looking forward to your race. Which version of the Endorphin Pro did you try?

Mark - Pretty quick turnaround on that illness, I'm glad you recovered quickly. "Miss 7" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Miss 6". Why do they have to grow up on us?

Flavio - I don't understand why people struggle to grab products at the top shelf. - lol. I can hardly go to the store without some short asking me for help grabbing something.
Bad weeks happen, hopefully you feel better during this one.
Thanks for your continue upkeep of the Strava tool. Is there some way I can at least buy you a coffee or some thing for this?

                      Merkle - That's a heck of a rust buster!

Between all the 500 errors and my company's user conference (I had a couple presenting roles to prepare for) I've been MIA for a while.

Just trucking along, somehow squeezing in all my runs around the conference schedule. Thankfully that's out of the way for a bit.

Unfortunately I wasn’t wearing my Garmin, but I’m pretty certain I covered 800m in that time…..and if anyone says it was a NZ measured field then I will not be happy.

WCRunner ran a 2h56 marathon without super shoes, in a race without a GPS watch, gels and probably didn't even have water along the course.

Do you still think his marathon time was not successful?

CalBears ran a 2h48 marathon without super shoes (Adidas Adizero 2 blue color) at the age of 50 (AG - 81.4%, 3rd place in AG at a highly competitive CIM race) - and yes, water was such a huge factor to that result (not!), without water he would not probably break 4 hours that day Sad

And completely bizarre factor is that GPS watch - I guess the watch is the major factor to run a successful marathon. FFS

I just don't follow your reasoning - 82% AG vs 71% AG is all you need to see. 2:56 is great time, I do not argue, but I ran 9 marathons faster than 2:56 at the age range of 48 to 56 yo. 71% AG is all I need to know - it is not up to potential - that's all. Means, training was not appropriate. Actually, when he said he didn't see a reason to run longer than two hours when marathon training, that was enough for me to hear.
