You're actually 79 seconds faster in the half, provided your sig lines are both up to date.

Darkwave - You're nuts to race all those 3 distances in the same day haha!

Honestly, since there is a top end limiter on my speed anyway, I didn't expect it to be that bad (and it wasn't, just long).  At the national meet, I'll be racing the 5000m on Sunday morning, the 800m on Sunday afternoon, and the 1500m on Monday morning.  Good thing I'm a marathoner.

About the records - I should note that there is a considerable lack of depth in the distance running in my classification (women's T36) - mostly because my classification only competes in the sprints at the Paralympics.  So there's really no interest in doing anything longer than 400m.

(If you're interested, the sprint national records for my division are 14.60 for 100m, 32.40 for 200m, and 1:18.49 for 400m.)

MIkkey - based on the picture in that link, you are the youngest-looking 55 year old ever Smile

In other news, CK and I managed to sync up for a run in DC yesterday, so that was awesome.  And I got another rec for shoes to try: the Saucony Sinister.  Unfortunately, those are also too high a stack for the track after October of this year (they are 25mm, the limit will be 20mm) but maybe they'll work for the roads.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

That photo was from Barcelona in 2010 so I would’ve been 44yo which was when I first became aware of that website and haven’t bothered changing it. I’m not sure how it works as a lot of my races are missing, but I can assure you that I now look and walk like Joe Biden.

Hi all- just checking in.  Steve- sorry to read about the race.  I agree with others maybe putting too much pressure on yourself.  I totally understand it and am as guilty as the next guy.

I'm gonna blame Flavio and the other "strength training" folks on here for some of my absence.  I'm now hooked.  3-4 day a week I do weights followed by a 5-8 miler at whatever pacce I feel like running.  It feels great! I feel stronger than I have ever felt and my minor back tweak have completely disappeared.  I'm not putting in the huge miles and actually think I'm in better overall shape. I have abs for the first time since I was 18

That said...I'm seriously considering jumping into a training block for a late fall race (can you say Philly again)....someone please talk me out of it!

That is pretty cool—just in time for shirtless running season! (Or I guess what normal people call beach season.) My weight is OK but I’ve never been distance runner-skinny, and still have that old-guy doughy midsection. I kinda wish it wasn’t there, but apparently not badly enough to do anything about it.

And if you’re looking to be talked out of a race, you’ve come to the wrong place. Do it!

darkwave it’s good to try out new pacers before race day.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Aaaah, I see. So sig line = 50+ PBs?

Yeah, my 10k/half were in 2011 but the interesting thing is (to me anyway) my half PB was just after a 400+ mileage month and the 10k was during a 400+ month with no specific workouts for either of those distances and no taper!  Mileage is king from 5k to marathon imo. 👍

Flavio - Maybe I was always meant to be a speedster but took the easy way out and became a marathoner.

My ankle is causing me no problems at all now and I’m tempted to give running another go. I’ve got no chance of ever PRing again…but the idea of going sub3 at 60yo is really starting to gain momentum in my head as I am definitely capable of doing it.  Yes, that’s another 18 months away but realistically I think that’s the amount of time I will need to get my shit together and build back slowly and consistently and be more disciplined.

I was gutted to DNS CIM as I was so looking forward to seeing Cal again and having a proper head to head race with him, but I became a bit reckless with my training (increasing mileage and pace) but knew I had to take that risk if I was going to beat him and it didn’t pay off. I ran about 900 miles August/September/October and looking back that was a recipe for disaster with so little running beforehand. 🤦🏻

                    Onwards and upwards. 👍

There are no qualification standards for the WMA Championships.  This year's meet in Gothenburg, Sweden, is from August 13-25. Unfortunately the entry deadline was June 4th.

My half went pretty well. I wasn’t sure what to expect, 6 weeks post-Eugene. It usually takes me a solid month to recover and feel like myself even on easy runs, which was about what happened. My mileage has been back into the 50s the last 3 weeks, but I’ve only tried adding speed back in the last two. And the workouts were pretty ragged. I was hoping I had enough base fitness to still have a decent race. If I were in shape, I’d probably be going for <1:31; I figured I’d shoot for 1:32 and be satisfied with anything <1:33. Unfortunately it was kind of a warm day. Not really hot, but not ideal for racing, especially when we haven’t even gotten out of early spring until now. My morning training runs have still been in the 40s F. For the race it was around 60F at the start and around 70F at the finish, with full sun.

I started out targeting a 7:00/mi pace. I held that pretty steady, alongside two other runners, for the first 7 miles. It was good to have a small pack. After that all three of us slowed a bit—it was a struggle to keep it under 7:10. I was determined to try to do so, but the other two runners fell behind. The field was kind of thin in that area, so I was doing some solo running. That plus starting to feel the heat made it a mental challenge, but I was able to hang on and avoid my pace slipping much further. Not so for many others. I saw a guy ahead who I had been chatting with at the start, and was targeting 1:30; I caught and passed him around mile 10. Then I saw a woman I’ve run with in my running group, who was also targeting 1:30; I caught and passed her around mile 11. For mile 12 I slipped a little to 7:15, but pulled it back in for a 7:05 mile 13. Miles 8-13 ended up averaging 7:08, and I finished at 1:32:23. I was happy with the result, considering my fitness level and the conditions—a lot of people were really feeling the heat and sun, and crashed pretty hard.

I took 3rd AG—annoyingly with 10 year groups. First place age 50, second place age 51, third place me at 59.

Dave That sounds like it was a tough race. I can't stand a hot race. Nice job toughing that out. That's a solid time for that temp + being in base building.

dw No spikes allowed for track race??? Odd. No drafting is also a little odd. That's an interesting day for sure overall. The selfie stick circus clowns at races just make me feel more badass. They're not even really on my radar menu lol. But I'm with you on that being a lot less cool than just a bunch of serious people there to do their best and compete.

I know you mentioned fueling between the 1500 and 800 but did you consume any caffeine throughout the day? Or is that not your thing? I feel like it could help with the mental fatigue of being there all day and racing 3 times.

Had to take Monday off since the cold was still bad. The rest of the week I've had chest congestion that is slowing getting better each day. My energy is almost back to normal. I still have to push myself a little harder than usual to get out the door.

On another note, today I tried 2 minute intervals at marathon pace and loved it. I've never messed with MP intervals this short before. I think it's a new thing I might do when I'm still really far out from my next marathon. Then gradually increase the interval lengths. Thoughts on that?

Mikkey - Hey, wasn't it you who had trouble in Valencia and ended up passing out and hitting the curb? Did you ever figure out what that was ?

Also, you can still PR in the mid distance on account you've never run any of those 😂 I mean, why not run a few 1500m races, I hear there are plenty of track meets in the UK. Maybe you hate it, maybe you will enjoy it enough to qualify for and compete at the world master championships.

Yep, I had a Joe Biden moment and went off in the wrong direction into the barriers and fell over. That was my 41st marathon and I never had that experience previously so I’m really not sure how that happened. I was quite stressed before the race which is not normal for me, but I never like making excuses if you have a bad race.

I’m going to find a 1500m race to run later this year just out of curiosity…I’m getting old and think I need to experience every running distance. 😎

Dave - sounds like a pretty good result, all things considered, well done.

Flavio - just gotta be patient working back. It's one of those 'takes as long as it takes' things sometimes.

mmerkle - that's a pretty solid week if you were still recovering. Haven't tried the 2 minute MP intervals tbh.

Me - Ended up being a week of hills. It wasn't planned that way, I just ended up running from home more than usual.  Bit more volume coming this week.  Also did a trail event out at Hunua with Miss 7 on Sunday, the second of six races.  It was a lot of fun, especially the stream crossing.  I've never heard someone quite so excited to have shoes full of water, she thought it was great fun.
