You're a genius!  Now if you can tell me if I should bother booking a flight to Boston.

If it's refundable or at least you can use it for future flights in case of cancellation, book it. London marathon was cancelled! So, you think Boston 21 will happen with 100 rimes more cases in US than in UK? Nah... I don't think so. I. think next year will be a recovery year - best case scenario, when, in best case, we will be getting slowly back to normal. I really hope - because what's happening is not really very exciting life to be honest. It was not too exciting before, but now? Poor kids - years of their lives are not as fulfilled as they should be... I know I know - could be worse, I know...

Good natured rubbing aside....Honestly? I don't think so. We don't have our shi....stuff...together in the US. I'm guessing it will be fall 2021 at the earliest before we have 1000+ people events. Going to take forever to get any vaccine distributed.

Thanks for the applause, but... I see this as similar to an injury.  You know things will get better some day and you will be able to race again, you just don't know quite when.  The only difference is that here, it's like the entire running community got injured at once.  (and also, we can still run, which is nice).

To that point, I've noticed that it seems to be the runners who rarely or never get injured who are having the hardest time emotionally handling the current racing uncertainty.

I have been injured for 2 1/2 years, so I get this. Your parenthetical is an important observation... and no, not in a "woe is me because I can't really" way. Being able to process/sublimate running goals going away due to injury is a different thing than doing that while still being able to run. It's like a mega version of the year that Western States had to be canceled for fires or last year's Hardrock cancellation. Some people had all their eggs in that basket, then lost the basket itself. Processing though that sucks and, for some, losing the motivation to stay with it is a big thing. As opposed to not being physically able to run anyway.

This thread is a million pages long now and I'm sure has had some tangents in the past, but the lack of goal races now kind of collapses the thread into mishmash of tangent-y stuff.

Well the flight price is £320 which I think is pretty good value, but it’s non refundable. However, I can change the date/destination free of charge.

          Good Bad & The Monkey

I dunno. I "ran" a marathon the other day.

Though I guess I did not train. Oh well.

I think a challenge in keeping the thread on topic is that the fact that there are very few current races is related to a controversial topic, so it is very hard to discuss upcoming races without discussing that topic, which then naturally evolves into a discussion of where that topic will go next, which in turn evolves into a discussion of why that topic is in its current state.

I've seen a similar thing with politics in DC.  Every time there is a federal government shutdown in the US, we lose a lot of our running routes and many of our races are cancelled (since so much of our running and race routes are managed by NPS).  So it really becomes hard to discuss one's training in the DC area without discussing the shutdown, which transitions to a discussion of why there is a shutdown and how long the shutdown will last and who's fault the shutdown is.

So it's not just a matter of not having races to discuss, but that so much of our racing plans hinge on controversial topics that invariably devolve into fruitless and non-constructive arguing.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Whoa whoa whoa buddy. This is a running website.

Having 'heard the expression' is different from knowing the reference.

I heard it a LONG time ago from a RWOL poster named Sunday20, and I thought he made it up.

BRO! Did you not see the first page with the list of goal races and times? Regardless of the length of the entire thread the first post has all the goal races and who will be running them.

                    EDIT

CAL so what do you think BAA will decide about applications? If 2021 gets canceled then anyone who qualified for 2021 gets to apply for 2022, OR (what I think) BAA will say "No more carrying over. The 2022 Boston Marathon will be going back to the normal way of doing things. Go qualify and apply. Best of luck." ?

rlopez I totally understand losing the goals and motivation associated with it. While I've not lost my goal I can say I've lost motivation many times which becomes, for me at least, a self-feeding destructive monster that extends beyond running. I hope you get better.

Mikkey I think I upgraded to a refundable flight just for the reasons cal points out. If Boston 2021 doesn't happen I might have to get my stuff together and cherry pick another qualifier (Tulsa? Indy? Revel? Jack and Jill) out of town. I could also run Bizz Johnson BUT I'd be really alone at that race. I think a sub 3 would be top 3 male every year.

rovatti can't we just erase the past let the past stay in the past? The young wipper snappers like JMac and myself might not know this sunday you speak of.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

                      Who was the original source?

In 2006, Michael Pollan published the book, The Omnivore's Dilemma. The book spoke about how to think about food. It famously included the phrase about how to eat: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants".

In 2007, I shared the text of a shorter version of the book that Pollan published in the New York Times, here on RunningAHEAD. That thread is here. The formatting got lost in the ensuing years.

Sometime shortly after that, perhaps in 2007 or 2008, MikeyMike posted a derivative phrase about how to train: "run a lot, mostly easy, sometimes fast". I cannot find the original post, but here is a derivative one. Maybe somebody else can find the original.

highlighted here in case anyone forgets.

Good faith mentions of COVID here are fine if they relate to races and their cancellations. But any judgements or snark about whether COVID is a reason for cancelling races belongs in that other thread. I am taking a hard line on that here as the latter has spun out of control more than once here and people have gotten nasty and others uncomfortable. We want this to be a place where people ARE comfortable to discuss running-related content.

Any specific advice you can provide in public or as a DM as a lawyer is always welcome. We also want this to be a kind, welcoming place.
