I'm wondering if they lower the NYC times back to where they used to be with the way times are improving.

What did they used to be? The google is failing me.

        Running Problem

        Problem Child

I didn't realize you could qualify for NYC with a half. My qualifying time appears to be 1:25:00... I am racing a fast half in March in the Varpoflies and my current PR is 1:28:12... *gears churning* ... Maybe I'll target 1:24:59...

          Checkers baby.

PJ They actually made it SLOWER to get in? wow. I'm impressed. Must have been a rough few years for marathon applicants in the 35-39 range.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Running matters, when I have friends that can't run. They too go into depths of despair. I for one get the meaning running adds to your life. I just limit it to a certain distance and time and right now that's 31 miles or 4 hours. When I cant run I'm often relieved and most worried about how fat will I get and how long it will take to get back in shape. But I enjoy the longer sleeps and carefree weekends when I'm injured because I know its a temporary reprieve. Injuries heal and we get back to what we love.

            Catch me outside running...

I totally can understand the effect not running can have on people, even if it's more extreme than what I experience. For me, running most morning is really my one totally alone, unplugged moment. It's usually just me and my thoughts; the time where most of my best ideas come from. I really think I'd be less successful professionally if I didn't get that ~5 times per week (I try to run most days, but usually 2 days a week I'm running with other people, which I like a lot too). I wouldn't get that experience working out in a gym, or playing soccer. It's also why I often end up running the same route(s) so often. I really like to just check out on some of my runs and go on auto pilot.

I cannot tell you the number of times I've said at my job "oh I was thinking about this on my run this morning..." There's a reason why some people have thoughts in the shower, because you're so checked out. Running is the same, but just obviously much more time so you can get some really good stuff there.

                This!

Running is such a great mental refresher and like both you and JMac, I often have some really good ideas and thoughts when running.  And then sometimes I don't think at all and just enjoy the fresh air and the sounds around me.

Thanks for posting. I finally time-qualified for 2020 via aging up, although wasn’t planning on doing it this year (and anyway looks like I would’ve been shut out if I tried). But I would like to run it at some point, and if they revert to the old times I’m in trouble.

Brew - Mt. Marathon is also on my bucket list (as is Crow Pass Crossing, but that's another story). Let me know if you're planning on making a trip up there to do that one.

Andres - I'm another that likes to check out on runs. There have been several times when I start off on a run, then the next thing I know it's 10+ miles later and I'm back at the house with no memories of what happened in between.

DO IT! IF you're going to get in why not apply and see how it goes? Maybe I should apply for the lottery.

Keen I was strictly forbidden from doing it prior to my wedding. Mother in law wouldn't have it. I didn't understand the problem. I had my essay as to why I should get in all lined up too. Mostly centered around "I don't deserve to run this. I'm not special. It's just a won and dun run fer fun." I was kinda drunk when I wrote it too.

I feel this way too. Just hearing your feet on the pavement in the early morning is wonderful. Really seems like my clearest moments happen then. Partially because I have three kids under 6 y/o, but also because people, phones, and TV are quite distracting for me. People think I'm nuts to run at 5am or earlier, but it can be quite wonderful (if rested). I do have to be careful about autopilot, though. One time I nearly ran right into an oncoming runner because I was "in the zone". Maybe they were too.

Max: good to hear from you. What's next?

I guess while I'm here I'll update on training. Finally back from the calf strain. Back up to 100% mileage and quality sessions are coming along. Signed up for a half on 3/8. Really just want to stay health to make to the start line in Hopkinton.
