Wealth Inequality (Read 404 times)

Why is it sideways?

Not meant to be a Democrat vs. Republican issue (though I am sure folks will disagree about the extent to which this is a problem and also the means of addressing it <----this is sticky.)

Just thought this video did a nice job of displaying the reality of wealth distribution in America -- and noting the difference between perception and reality.

      Interesting.

A few things that left me wondering...Where did he get his data for the actual distribution?

How did he define wealth? Is it income, net worth..both?

I make more money today but by assisting  two kids in college my net worth is down substanially. In my definition of wealth I'm poorer. (one more to kid to go)

The references are right below the video. He is using net worth.

The most amazing thing is how clueless most people are about actual wealth distribution. 5000 American's is too big a sample size to chock it up to hand picking the willfully ignorant.

I think there are a significant number of people in this country who would have a financial net worth below zero.

Many of them are not below the poverty level based on their income levels either.

Does everyone have to be financially equal? If I work hard for my money, which I do, why should I have to give it to someone else?

                an amazing likeness

Thanks for the video link, Jeff. Provocative stuff.  When I get to navel gazing about this societal issue, I get stuck around the role of government, the role of the corporate governance, the role of individuals, et al in creating, exploiting and changing the current situation.

                  Then my head hurts.

But, wow, 330m people in USA. Is that right?  Wow.  Was about 200m my youth.  No wonder it's so friggin crowded everywhere.

Do all koalas eat Vegemite? If koalas crap bigger than kangaroos, which they do, why should they have to share their Vegemite?

Alternatively, what are you talking about?

Does everyone have to be financially equal?

No, which is why nobody is suggesting everyone should be financially equal.

Did you watch the video? No? Okay, let me summarize...it simply shows the disparity between what most people think is the ideal distribution of wealth vs. what they think is the actual distribution of wealth, vs. what the actual distribution really is.

                      It's about perception versus reality.

It's not actually suggesting you give your hard earned wealth away to someone who works less hard than you do. I'm not planning to give any of mine away either, for the record.

                        Very interesting link Jeff.

It always amazes me there can be such a disparity of views from the actual. Sort of like two people witnessing an event (ballgame or car accident) at the same time having completely different understanding. Except here, it seems to be a factor of lack of knowledge of facts.

I guess my take is better access to accurate information would help bring actual and perceived closer. Frankly, I thought I had a general handle on the scope but not so much.

Save the political part of this for another time. Klompus - the narrator in the opening segment poo poo'd socialism so I think redistribution is  not overt in this video.

My apologies. I admit I did not watch it until now. Anytime I hear "wealth inequality" I go into defense mode. Again, my apologies.

                          Singer who runs a smidge

I've always wondered what on earth I would do with an income that was something ridiculous, like $50k per month.  Now I think $50k per month isn't even ridiculous.

When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run.  The only thing that matters is how we have loved.

I didn't check his references, but just looking at the domain names, I'm sure some would argue that they are all overly politicized already.

I really wish I was in that 1%...or even the top 10%....I'd like to think I would be more willing than others to give to the bottom 20%, but I can't say that for sure.  Maybe I would believe what it seems they believe...That all of those people are just lazy leaches living off the government dime.

I really wish the people in charge could come up with a solution to what is obviously a problem.

npaden - true, net worth and income are not always correlated well in this country...2 of my relatives are great examples.  One of them makes more than twice what the other makes.  The higher income one is significantly in debt and probably only her home saves her from negative net worth...barely.  The lower income one has a pretty impressive net worth given the income level.
