5K PR. Finally I have done it!!! (Read 981 times)

Yeah. Keep doing what you're doing. If I remember right, you've only been at this for a year or so. If you stay consistent and keep working, you'll keep improving for years to come. As you've learned, making progress in running is a long-term endeavor with peaks and valleys. If you keep at it, you'll look back at this 5k just like you look back now at those runs a year ago...it's only in that sense that you are scratching the surface.
Nice one Jeff, I see what you mean. As you say, patience, and time on feet works eh. Thanks.

"I've been following Eddy's improvement over the last two years on this site, and it's been pretty dang solid. Sure the weekly mileage has been up and down, but over the long haul he's getting out the door and has turned himself into quite a runner. He's only now just figuring out his potential. Consistency in running is measured in years, not weeks. And over the last couple of years, Eddy's made great strides" Jeff 14 Jan 2009

That is awesome, you definitely should improve a lot over the next couple years. I may have to try out some low heart rate training since I continuously train myself to the ground. One thing of advice I have for you is be careful when doing workouts 2-3 days in a row. Try to give yourself 1-3 days of low heart rate training in between workouts. It may be fine now but if you continue not to give yourself enough recovery it will take its toll on you in a couple months. I've done this quite a few times myself and it really sucks. Congratulations, though. It is really exciting to see your improvement. I'll hopefully be going for a sub 18 5k here not to far from now. What kind of training are you planning on doing now?

I have my own Garmin PR story. I was going for a sub 20 minute 5K myself. Tracking just fine per the bunny on the GPS. And then... The finish line of the real race, somehow, is a bit farther than my GPS is thinking. 20:04. Yuck. Anyhow, I'm gonna break that 20 minute mark this summer.

Really GREAT job...makes me wanna run fast like you!
Run like you are on fire! 5K goal 24:00 or less (PR 24:34) 10K goal 50:00 or less (PR 52:45) HM goal 1:55:00 or less (PR 2:03:02) Marathon Goal...Less than my PR (PR 4:33:23)
Congrats on the PR Eddy, great time!

Well done, Eddy! Very fast! Congratulations. Big grin

Congrats Eddy, your progress in both weight loss and speed has been great to follow. In another thread you compared your progress to another new runner, and my comment was something along the lines of "you don't seem to realize how exceptional your performance has been..." Exceptional indeed, it's nothing short of amazing in my book. The only potential drawbacks to a real 5K are going out too fast, or congestion at the start. The upside is significant. You'll have the excitement (never underestimate adrenaline), competition (I can reel that guy/gal in...) and an honest to God finish line to kick to. I'm betting you get your new goal, keep doing what you're doing.

My current plan is: Sun: rest Mon: Easy6-8miles with 10 pickups of 30 seconds Tue: Track session: Itervals (eg: 16x300m; 8x800m; ladder sessions: all with 1 minute recovery) Wed: Easy 6-8 miles Thurs: Run of 7 miles: 2 mile warm up and down, and 3 mile Tempo / 5x1mile reps with full recovery all out Fri: 5 mile Sat: Long run of about 12-14, getting in hills and mixed terrain/ hill reps. Also every other day I do loads of abs work for core stability, and free weights.

                    Running safely

Congratulations Eddy. I know exactly how you feel as far as getting a PR and it not being a race. I just did one of my own this morning. I am still flying high. I will post details in another thread.
When are you planning to start racing?

                        Slow-smooth-fast

I am planning my first race in 6 weeks, it is actually going to be a 10k, my previous best is 42:22, so I am hoping to blow this out of the water.
