2017 Sub 3 Marathons...and beyond! (Read 403 times)

Some of us in this thread are training for a PR at NYC. Weren't we just talking about taper madness and how anxious it can make you? Please do not add to that anxiety!

If there's one piece of advice I do have - at least from my HM experience - it would be to not let the course psych you out.  My 10km and HM both came on undulating courses.  I've generally run better HM times on undulating courses than flat ones.  If you get the prep and the race strategy right, the course will take care of itself.

    3,000m: 9:07.7 (Nov-21) | 5,000m: 15:39 (Dec-19) | 10,000m: 32:34 (Mar-20)

    10km: 33:15 (Sep-19) | HM: 1:09:41 (May-21)* | FM: 2:41:41 (Oct-20)

    * Net downhill course

Last race: Waterfront HM, 7 Apr, 1:15:48

    Up next: Runway5, 4 May

Hilly courses are slower than flat, all other factors equal.

Assuming net up/ down is zero, I like John Kellogg's equation of 1.7s slower for every 10 foot rise.

      PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

      40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

      2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

      2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

I had to look this up: I believe Ed Whitlock holds the WR for >70 marathon with 2:54:48. My fascination with this record goes back to a marathon in 1996 when John Keston almost broke 3:00; he ran a 3:00:58 that day. He also sang the National Anthem at the starting line that day. He passed me at the half looking very comfortable. Me, not so much.

Good luck to your friend Gene!

Yes, John Keston holds the American Record for the M7074 AG, and Ed Whitlock holds the WR. Gene is looking at John Keston's record as well as the age-specific M70 WR which Ed Whitlock holds at 3:00:23. Ed was coming off an injury and got faster each year as he approached 74.

Here are the age-specific records for 26.2: http://www.arrs.net/SA_Mara.htm

If Gene runs 3:00:22 or better in Rotterdam or Boston next year, he will secure both the M7074 AR and the M70 WR.

I'll be honest... I'm not training for a PR, I just *really* want to beat Mikkey's time at NYC.

mini - loved the race report, great stuff! Congrats, you and I are marathon PR twins!

Watson - I prefer rolling courses to flat courses, I can run them much faster... you get to recruit different muscle fibers on the inclines, therefore avoiding the fatigue. The reward for an uphill climb is an easy faster cadence descent, kind of like doing intervals as opposed to constant effort.

          ThreeDB

Hi all, migrating from RWOL.  Nice to see some familiar names.  I'm changing my handle here to ThreeDB because that's really all that I want at this point (ie- to earn a 3-digit bib at Boston), short of a moose mug.

My next marathon is Baystate on Oct 22, followed by Boston 2018.  My running background is below.  I'll post the final few weeklies of my current cycle.

            Bio:

            -- 40's, male, Boston area

-- athletic background through age 18, then switched to beer games

-- began running consistently April 2013; bought shoes day after bombings

-- struggle to balance sleeping enough with running enough to make gains

            Training:

-- marathon training novice relative to peers on RWOL

-- usually Pfitzinger with customization;  next cycle thinking about Daniels-ish

            -- mileage history:

            • 2013= 1,054miles,
            • 2014= 2,984miles,
            • 2015= ~1,500miles,
            • 2016= 2,359miles;

-- once I exceed 70mpw I start to trade in sleep for running

            -- marathon racing history:

            • #1 Lehigh 2013 3:11 (27mpw),
            • #2 Boston 2014 2:59:50 (60mpw),
            • #3 Philly 2014 2:51 (64mpw)
            • #4 Boston 2015 2:49:18 (61mpw) -- current PR
            • #5 Boston 2016 3:18 (poor training and health),
            • #6 Baystate 2016 2:49 (72mpw),
            • #7 Boston 2017 3:01 (not much consistent training, halo from Fall 2016 training)
            • #8 Baystate 2017 __??   I'm having a great cycle... If race weather cooperates then I will shoot for 2:45.

Looking forward to participating with so many familiar folks!

                (for week ended Oct 8)

                Week 16 of 18: 65 miles

                M      8   7:41 easy
                Tu     8   7:32 easy + strides
                W      9    including 5x600 at 1:57avg (walked down 2:01 to 1:54), 200 active recovery
                Th   14   6:53 progression -- 7:13 miles 1-5, 6:46 6-10, 6:31 11-14
                F       0   URD – “stuff”
                Sa     9   7:26 easy
Su   17   including 5 at 6:11avg; tried in/out but strangely 5:50 felt like an all-out sprint whereas 6:20 felt like jogging, so just tried to find a comfortable cruise mode which turned out to be 6:11avg

An ok week – stress piled up during the 2nd half which sapped energy and drove a URD and sub-par LR.

Doing better now, in 2nd week of 3-week taper – aiming for 54 miles with only mile-repeats and a 13-miler.

Sweat runs from here on in, because race-day forecast (9 days out) is for 70’s.

3DB: You've had a great cycle. I really hope that the weather on the day cooperates... 9 day forecasts are almost voodoo when it gets to the specifics, so don't go overboard on the sweat runs.

                    5k: 17:32 (11/18) -- 10k: 38:47 (07/17) -- 10m: 60:23 (08/17)  -- 1/2: 1:22:32 (11/17) -- full: 2:49:26 (04/17)

Flyrunner those are some amazing times by those old dudes. As I age I can see how hard it becomes to maintain training load and manage injuries etc. Im sure theres alot of  Letsrun 20 year olds who dont appreciate those times at that age . Im sure there would be a few old Kenyan/Ethiopians who could do well but after watching a documentary on africans racing in Europe, I can see they only do it for money and dont really enjoy running as a hobby so give up once their competitive careers are over.

jmac: Is your PR soft relative to your current fitness? If so, sure go for it. But do have a reasonable pacing plan for NYC, it's a bear of a course to try to run fast on. Mutai's 2:05 there continues to hurt my brain.

3DB: Great to see you here! I initially read the screenname as "three douchebags", and assumed you were referring to you, me, and Strugglr (have we got him here yet?) in 1/1 next April. Are you still freaking out about the weather? It's actually been pretty good around here for the last 4-5 days (as you're aware). I bet you're actually fine for Baystate. Don't they have a relatively early start too?

I'm a bit on the fence about sweat runs myself; I'm wondering if I should just do them every cycle now. I mentioned this to my coach and got "... hopefully we don't have to do that ..." back.

flyrunnr: It's weird that the M7074 WR is slower than the M75 WR, isn't it? Either way, crazy impressive.

I watched the NatGeo Breaking 2 doc last night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2ZLG-Fij_4

Nike's stunt is/was dumb, but I enjoyed the hell out of this. Some reasons:
                          1. The Nike team saying that they think Tadese can get better marathon results because they figured out that he never drank fluids while running. Lolz
                          2. Everyone clearly knowing Desisa was in crap shape.
                          3. Tadese bearing more than a passing resemblance to Bubbles from the Wire.
                          4. Kipchoge. Holy crap do I wish I could approach anything in my life with the discipline and grace that he approaches running.

Totally agree. To me he's sort of a hybrid of two of my favorites from the previous "generation": Geb and Tergat. The talent, drive and likability of Geb, but more of the quiet, gentleman type demeanor of Tergat.
