Organising a fun run (Read 665 times)

skinnycaponesugar

My son goes to a small public school always in search for fundraising ideas. I think a fun run would attract a lot of people and elevate the school's profile in our community. I'd like to propose it to the fundraising comittee, however, as all you parents know, if you propose it, you'll be (most likely) the one in charge of organising it. Has anyone been involved in something like this? tell me ALL about it, please Smile

I thought about trying to run one for my daughter's school as well. I spoke with a local running store and they said that in the town we live in, it's not really worth the logistics that you have to go through. I would check with a local running store, some of them might help you organize it, or at least could give you tips on how to get started.

I'm reviving/hijacking this topic rather than starting a new one. I got suckered into be the Assistant Director for a nonprofit music organization (WGI world class indoor drumline). We usually have to fundrais $30k of our annual budget (members pay tuition, but we try to keep that low), and they literally nickel and dime the full amount with a $100 fundraiser here, etc. Long story short (too late)-- I thought it may be a good idea to work with one of the few local (Philly area) running clubs and try and put together an April 5k run and walk. Share the profits, the whole deal. Even nicer, the ensemble could perform for the runners along the course and after the finish. Yes, I used the search function, and read several threads, including this one and: http://www.runningahead.com/forums/post/60b5bfddbed54a0482dd5120276520f7#focus, so I know people on here have organized races before. How open, in anyone's experience, are running clubs to either helping to promote or helping with such a run?? How profitable can these be? Thanks! Chris

No experience on organizing, but I will say that my son's Scout troop volunteered to help man a triathlon around here for a portion of the proceeds, and his girlfriend's sorority did the same thing. Both groups required members to do a certain portion of community service hours, so that was how they fulfilled that requirement. My wife's company did one several years back (non-profit 501c3 group, so donations were tax-deductible) and made most of the money from sponsors donating money to fund the race. They got something like $20K in cash donations from corporations and only spent about $1000 for logistics (many goods and services were donated as well, like post race food and t-shirt printing). If the ensemble is playing, get their parents and family to work the course too, if possible.

My club provides race management services and has a few tips here: http://www.mcrrc.org/rms/rms1.php April *might* be too soon. Good luck.

My club is involved in a lot of the races that take place in town. Their website has a great outline of steps needed to be taken. http://www.memphisrunners.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=site.display&pageId=397&parentPage=396
