I believe the equipment price entry field is currency-agnostic as long as the entry is numeric. You are correct, the display column will then use the "$" symbol in front of that number and there is no option in the locale settings to change that display behavior.
Meaning, you can enter equipment price in your local currency. However it will get the "$" in the Price column when displayed.

Make a small sticker with your currency's symbol, and place it on your monitor over the $.
