Steve - nice week.  If you have to skip the race, then so be it.  Your fitness will not disappear. Best of luck with your mum, can you talk to her or siblings re whether you should come up for the race?   Both my parents in Christchurch have had significant health issues this year and it is hard.  They are actually moving up to Upper Hutt end of the year which will help.

Thanks Watson and piwiWatson - my siblings are not a factor for various reasons I won't go into here.  Unfortunately it's all on me.  I'm going to Wellington for 24 hours so I don't see why that is unreasonable.  I'm doing it!

        RIP Milkman

Steve - I'm sorry for what's going on. I can say I went through something similar with my dad. He arrived home for hospice care 2 days before a race I had been training for months. It was a really hard decision on what to do. Ultimately, I decided running it was best for my mental health at the time. He ended up passing away about 48 hours after my race, so I did end up seeing him one last time. But I made my peace that the race was the best thing for me.

The only advice I can give you is do whats right for you. For some people, its racing for their health. For others, it's staying with the family. Don't worry about what other people think: do whats right for you.

Light week for me.  The heavy previous weekend, plus the Dorne Cup being a 'B' race for me, meant that I ended up during the one quicker session during the week, and the rest easy, with Friday off.  No running today for recovery from yesterday.  I find 30 minutes racing to be the point where recovery from a race is significant.  It''s very non-linear for me, 20 minutes is pretty quick recovery, but around 30 minutes the recovery jumps up.

JMac - tends to be mostly autumn and spring races actually. Not so many in the middle of summer (as it coincides with Xmas holidays) and not as many through winter (but still a few).

Run titles - the disco car wash is actually a new car wash on Brigham Creek Rd. I’ve never been past it in the dark but it had flashing green, purple and blue lights like they were trying to have a dance party inside a carwash. At 6:30am on a Sunday morning in the middle of winter. No it didn’t make sense to me either.

The $685m was in reference to a new bridge over Auckland harbour that the government announced last week for walking and cycling (the current bridge is vehicles only). It’s a nice idea but frankly it’s mostly because a bunch of Grey Lynn hipsters like the idea of riding their unicycles to the North Shore for brunch on a Sunday. The cost / benefit for it is highly sketchy to say the least.

Steve - sorry to hear about your mum. I think JMac is pretty spot on with his advice. Go with what is right for you! I hear you on the siblings too… my brother is in NY and I know that if it came down to it, it’d be me looking after mum and dad.

Watson - a bit less vertical this week (but good effort all the same).

James - sorry to hear about the injury niggles.

James - “Our closet” to us means I’ve gotten 2 drawers and the wife takes the rest of the space.

Zebano - It looks like you just found the perfect pacer and you didn’t even have to pay for it.

Piwi - damn the elevation on that long run!

LOL at you scanning the neighbourhood for your stolen shoes.

Steve - that’s tough, it weighs heavily on you and it makes hard for recovery as you’re constantly so worried.

My dad had a heart attack this week and is in the hospital recovering. We need to pray that he becomes better, cause there are no ICUs available (All taken by covid patients).

All that is to say, stay strong and best wishes!

me - A recovery week. The long run today was hard by the end but in a very pleasant park with good shade.

JamesD - hang in these - I'm sorry you're dealing with all of this. FWIW, I think everything hurting is a better sign than one particular area hurting, if you know what I mean? Sounds like a good thing that you did the reset on on your long run today.

Watson - congrats on your race (you race so much, I missed this one!) And interesting on the recovery. For me, 20-30 minutes is about the same recovery. Mile races are a bit less, but still need about 48 hours.

Steve - I am so sorry. Regarding running the race - I think there's no right or wrong answer, just what is right for you (as Jmac experienced).

Flavio - best thoughts for your father.

If only Saucony had shoes I liked right now...

Piwi - we do NOT leave our houses open around here.  Smile.  There's been a lot of package theft, car theft, and home invasions in the past year.  We always had some, but it has really escalated.

Tapertapertaper.  Weather is looking pretty good right now, though you really can't trust any weather forecast for that area.  I've done the race several times, and often the weather on race morning is NOT what was forecast the night before.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

JMac - That must have been very tough.  How did you go in that race?  My Dad died suddenly in 2010 and there is absolutely no way I could have raced for some time afterwards.  Maybe when it's sudden it's different - I feel like right now I have time to prepare myself for scenarios.

Steve - that's a promising sign. If you have a spring in your step right now I'd take it as a big positive.

Piwi - that's pretty impressive at 89 and 90!  Both my grandfathers died early of heart attacks in their mid-60's.  My grandmothers both lived significantly longer but also both got dementia so the last few years were pretty tough.

Sorry all, I'm dropping this here and getting some sleep. It was a hectic weekend with a 5AM start tomorrow. The race was a success, and my main failure was life getting so busy I couldn't bike or swim. I'll catch up on all the missed posts tomorrow.
