      RIP Milkman

It's taken about 15 months, but I can finally say this: I'm glad I'm in the US and not NZ at this point. That sucks Steve. That's all we're allowed to say on this thread without getting scolded like children

Think I'm going to run a 5K this weekend. Adductors seemed to have stabilized with HEAVY rolling and taping (as sore as I would be after a deep tissue massage) and I'm down to a level 1 or 2 pain instead of the 5 I was at. Forecast is crap again, it's summer, so be it. But hoping for at least some more clouds compared to last time. As long as I keep making progress in my 5K times this summer, I'll be happy.

All about the relative right now, not the absolute. Or at least I'm telling myself that to keep my attitude positive as my fitness isn't there yet

        5K: 16:37 (11/20)  |  10K: 34:49 (10/19)  |  HM: 1:14:57 (5/22)  |  FM: 2:36:31 (12/19)

And Wellington is at Level 2 to Sunday, at least.

          No Wellington marathon this Sunday.

JMac - yeah we've had it good for the better part of 12 months, unfortunately we are behind on vaccine rollout and I'd say it's 6 months at least (probably more like 12) before we've got through most of the population.  Races might be a bit of a lottery over the next while I'd say (although that's been the case since mid-last year anyway).

            RIP Milkman

I read a fascinating article on this last night: basically countries that did really well early on are now suffering the consequences of that very success. No, this isn't the COVID thread, but it's directly relevant to you folks in NZ.

Weather forecast for Sunday is rain and gale northerlies, so maybe a blessing in disguise that Wellington marathon is rescheduled?

Well.  I'm not sure how I'm feeling.  Spent the day moving Mum into her rest home which went better than expected.  She's not in good shape at all but she's in a very nice place now.  Because of that (and my partner not managing to set her alarm properly so I slept way late...) I was rushed all morning getting in my last workout before the race, and running in the Endorphin Pros as a last check, I had no idea about the Wellington non-outbreak until I saw Mark's post.  Someone had Covid in Wellington, no-one in Wellington has tested positive but in these ridiculous times that is enough to cancel the race.  It was my light at the end of the tunnel but I know it would have been tough to deal with the stress and run well.

watson - The forecast is now even worse than yesterday so you may be right.  Gale north westerlies, severe in places, and heavy rain.  October in Wellington is even more unsettled so I have no hope of it being better.

I feel quite wiped out.  The low light of the day was a nurse asking questions in front of Mum that I had to sign off.  All of a sudden "if her heart stops, do you want to resuscitate or not?" and gets her pen ready for the answer.  I decided to defer that one

The South Island Half Marathon is on August 1.  I would have liked to have done that but obviously couldn't plan for it as there wasn't enough recovery time after Wellington.  I think I will target that.

For now, I'm drinking bourbon.  I had booked Monday and Tuesday as leave days to recover, and a post race massage on Monday.  I think I'll keep those plans.

Jmac I can tell you its awesome living here and covid has barely effected my life. My jab for my age group is mid September. Our country is doing just fine 🙂

piwi, you're an optimist.  Our vaccination rate is the worst in the developed world, which is not overly surprising given the competence of our govt.

I guess we're doing fine, as long as we don't want to go anywhere.  I was looking at the Melbourne half which was always a long shot but now it's on the same day as the proposed new Wellington date.  I don't even know if I'll target the new Wellington date yet.  I prefer winter although Wellington in spring is still like winter in most places....

I'm not in a hurry to go anywhere. I'm glad we got to see if the vaccine was safe and worked.

Steve- I'm sorry man.  I was in a similar position with Rotorua Marathon last year but without the challenging personal situation you've got as well, sure sounds like a tough day on top of a tough few weeks.  Enjoy the bourbon, you've sure earned it.

Piwi - Kinda with Steve on this one.  We are so far behind on vaccination in NZ it's just ridiculous.  The government has been blaming it on vaccine supply but that doesn't seem to have impacted the nations with significantly better vaccination rates than us.  The likely consequence of this is inbound and outbound travel restrictions lasting significantly longer as well as probably more risk of further lockdowns relative to other countries.  I'm glad I've got like 5 races planned between August and November because I hopefully will end up getting to run at least one of them haha.

JMac - it's a fair point.  With tourism being our biggest export sector pre-Covid, the government's inaction on vaccine could end up seriously costing us too.  Plus NZers generally love travelling and without vaccines, that becomes tough unless there are travel bubbles in place.

40 miles per week is plenty for mile training.

I can pull my 1500m training log if you’d like.
