    Running Problem

    Problem Child

CFarr seems like the consistency is paying off.

Marky Mark I seriously read it as "Wakanda" on Strava.

Steve Good luck with the upcoming race. It would be EASY to say "it was the booze" but there can be a lot of emotions impacting a run. Sorry about your friend.

James Keep the speed work and tempo runs. I'm dreading starting them officially this week and half of the reason is it is hot. The other half is the desire to do the isn't there. I almost used to enjoy the suffering to build more confidence and now it just sounds painful.

Flavio I think I'll be aiming for 2:18-2:24 next time I try them out and see how it goes. I need to remember to train for where I'm AT not where I want to be. Always possible to increase the speed later, or just focus on marathon specific pace building for the next 3 or 4 months. Also, thanks for adding the "miles in KM" so I don't have to do the work.

Dwave I wouldn't EXPECT the lane 1 to be clockwise. I also wouldn't expect someone to change THEIR exercise to fit me or my friends. It's something I've learned about people in life and I'm continually reminded of. No matter what I do my way is usually the wrong way simply because it isn't THEIR way. I avoid most of this by doing workouts on the road where cars MOSTLY give me space and when they don't I treat it as a race condition where slower runners force me off my desired path. I HAVE heard of people doing track workouts in alternating directions. Something about the track slopes towards lane 1 so they don't want to hurt their ankles. Again, I do my workouts on the road so I can't say I care if a track has a 1/5% gradient.

Olympics I was watching prelims and other "not medal" races. It sucked watching an 18 year old with NO chance of winning get kicked out because he was so nervous he took off at the words "SET" for the 100 m sprint. The final for the 100m spring was cool. Canada almost seemed cocky about winning before the race was won. I never knew there were qualifying rounds AT the Olympics for these events. I also didn't know if your reaction time is FASTER than 0.100 you're disqualified. It doesn't seem appropriate to make a rule requiring a specific reaction time in a  timed event. I guess it isn't fair for a 9.9 runner to take off 0.10 seconds before you and win the 100m sprint, but I'm also of the mindset "if you want to try and guess the starting time you risk the chance of losing the whole thing and eventually when you play with fire long enough you get burned."

James - Nice week, and you do have a good amount of time yet to get in some more solid training. Sorry to hear about your mate.

Steve, Piwi, DWave, Mark - Nice weeks.

Zebano - At least I'm not alone in not having watched more than a couple minutes of the games. On my way back from Galveston I saw a couple minutes of a men's floor and pommel horse competition while waiting for my girls.

Flavio - Pretty good summation to us! I'd be willing to wager that despite similar physical size a muscle biopsy would show me to be more slow twitch and you more fast twitch. I think this also shows in our selection of training activities and race distances. You like your weights and shorter distances, while I like the cardio and mid-longer distances.

Track direction - Aside from the actual school track/xc teams there are only a couple people in my town who would even consider using the track, and they/we all know the proper directions to things. Not a great sample population, or is it?

GLORIOUS weather this morning (66F/18.8C) with a bit of a cooling north wind to boot. Easily the best running weather in anything resembling recent memory.
I did put what I *think* will be the final nail in the coffin over a bit of one-upsmanship over a local segment that just popped up on Strava last week. I took it during my LR (4 second improvement), the former owner improved that by 10 seconds later the same day, and I lowered it by 16 more this morning (including a Strava 1/2mi PR on the uphill segment!). Back to base building and away from coach un-approved "workouts".

Felt pretty good after my run this morning, but maybe 30 minutes after I just got slammed with fatigue like you wouldn't believe. Thankfully this is shaping up to be quite a slow day at work, so maybe I can sneak in a nap.

Definitely operates in similar circles - I knew him first when he was in a class with me and a mutual friend of ours (M.S).  He worked in software and consulting in Christchurch over the last 20 years.  It's been a pretty tough blow for all of us who were in that class, which was pretty intense and basically involved living in each other's pockets almost 24/7.

Forecast for Saturday looks OK.  Light wind which will probably get blocked by the trees anyway, cold-ish (5-6C / low 40's), and light rain.  If not for the rain, it'd be pretty much perfect, but the risk with the rain is that it'll make it feel colder.  Still thinking singlet and shorts, but will probably wear the decent gloves for the whole race.  I tossed up wearing a merino base layer but the risk is that'll be too hot if the rain is really light / inconsistent.  Small-ish race with only ~400 in the half, so reasonable shot at a podium and prize money depending as always on who shows up (I didn't recognise any names on the participant list and NZXC Champs are in nearby Dunedin on the same day so probably not much of a field but you never know).

Legs have been feeling a bit meh this week, but I never read anything into how the legs feel in taper week anyways.

Lightweight gloves are always awesome for races with rain. Either you underestimate the amount of rain and everything is soaked so gloves won’t matter or they’re just right for the first 15k and you deal with wet hands for the last 6k. Best of luck coming home with the big prize money. I am so out of the running loop all I know are local races and none of those are scheduled until maybe October. I should consider doing the 10k as a training assessment because right now I’m way too scared of bad news to commit to a half marathon 8 weeks, almost to the day, before Marathon Race Day.

random observation: over the last 31 days the highest TDP at my

house was a 154. This is a 104.7F temperature. Pretty sure I ran early, or skipped it due to air quality. I have so much respect for those who train when TDP is 140+.

                        Intl. correspondent

Hi guys, quick checkin from me. Monday around 4am I woke up and started feeling some lightheadedness.

It does not cause disorientation nor nausea. It's been on and off (mostly on but thankfully mostly off while I sleep) since then.

I've consulted a doctor who figured from the symptoms that it could be possibly an anxiety peak or back pain. Next day I did a battery of blood tests. All came back perfectly normal.

Then 2 days ago I went to a local pharmacy to have my blood pressure measured and do a rapid covid test. Covid was negative but the blood pressure was spiking at 170/90. It's very abnormal as my blood pressure has always been around 120/80, so I panicked and headed to the ER. Over there at the ER the nurse was not impressed, classified me as lowest risk and had me do an eletro. Eletro was fine as well, and oxygen saturation was ok.

A few minutes later a doctor spoke to me, told me it's okay that the blood pressure spikes sometimes under stress. This time the doctor measured my blood pressure once again and it had lowered to 150/90.

Yesterday had another video call with the first doctor, she thinks it's either stress or back pain. I have some medicine for lightheadedness, an anti-inflammatory and a potent muscle relaxant to take before going to sleep.

So today I gave running a go and it seems I can still run which is nice since it will take the edge of my anxiety at least.

Now I wait a few days and have my blood pressure measured again to see what's up. I might consult a few doctors to complete my checkup, maybe some body scans as well.

It's funny how our perspective of things in life can change dramatically from one day to the next.

Is San Marino number one? I saw their olympian medal in an event. I never even knew it was a country. I haven't watched enough of the games to know what is going on other than the trans athlete from New Zealand didn't medal so that made rounds on the internet. Sort of a "well if you win you cheated, and if you lose we're going to make fun of you" type of thing.

I'm not looking forward to an attempt at a tempo run today. I'm trying to find the passion (read: anger/hate) I had back in 2018 and 2019 that fueled so much progress. Even with the heat last year I'd be getting hard workouts in and now it feels like a solid "meh" effort towards a lackluster 3:08.

I had something with my heart a few years ago (bad palpitations) and was worried I was going to have to quit altogether. Ended up going away and only rarely experience it now. I hope it's something similar: heart stuff can be scary, especially as an endurance athlete.

                                Flavio - scary stuff.

Piwi - nobody gives a rats ass how many medals are won per capita except the smaller countries.  How about Athing Mu?

RP - you worry me man. I understand running for mental health and the occasional hate fueled run, but if you're looking to fuel and entire training block on anger? It makes me worry about the rest of your life. I gotta ask: do you really want to run sub 3 in the marathon or is just something you feel like you should do?

I ran in an all-comers track meet last night in both an 800 and 4x400. It was a lot of fun but turnout was pretty poor. The 800 I went out too slow and sat on a guys shoulder for the first 400 thinking we were cruising but picked it up when I saw a 1:19 on the clock and ran (he was pacing a friend to 2:40) the second lap in 75. I'd like to find another meet or maybe just TT as I think I could get really close to 2:30 with spikes and a harder early effort.
