Amazing NZ is incapable of deporting or imprisoning someone for organising a terrorist attack because it's not enough of a crime...we have to wait until they actually do it.  Thank goodness he was under 24/7 surveillance, this could have been horrific (even moreso).  Extremely devastating for the families who won't be allowed to visit hospital under the current lockdown.

It's "interesting" too that after the Christchurch attack the PM said we all bear responsibility for creating the environment in which such a terrorist attack could occur.  This time she says the terrorist alone is responsible and it's completely unrelated to any faith or beliefs.  Grrr.

James - You sound as sensitive to cold as I am to heat.  Those conditions sound almost perfect for me.  Sorry to hear you're missing a chance to race.

Mark - You weren't anywhere near a supermarket today, were you? Everyone you know ok?

I was, but several hours earlier and 20km away, thankfully.  One saving grace of lockdown is that very few people would've been out and about and in harms way for this.

And I agree completely with what Steve said.  This is very tragic but it was also completely avoidable.  This person was a known security risk and somehow the authorities still couldn't stop it early enough.

James - sorry about the delays.  I realize you struggle in cool conditions, but you get get lucky with a mild day, alternatively could you put multiple layers on?

I rescheduled my Covid-19 vaccination, so I gad my first yesterday, along my 13 year old.

            Re the terror attack:

            - I could be wrong, but the last significant law change was 2002.  So both major parties have had opportunities to make changes, but did not.  This may have related to coalition minor parties not wanting it to happen?

            - Clearly the law needs tightening.

            - There is real risk of wrongful retribution against Sri Lankans and/or Muslims.  So the PM needs to be really careful.  Look at the social media attacks on pacifika just for catching Covid-19.

Is there really a risk of retribution against Muslims?  And if so, why is there not a risk from Muslims after 2019?  I know I could understand wanting revenge for both, but would never encourage anyone to do anything violent.  Especially to people who had nothing to do with it.

I keep hearing about all these racist comments made towards people during this latest outbreak but haven't actually seen any.  I have no doubt there are a few idiots out there who would do such things but not much more than that.

Edit:  I should clarify that I agree with her comments this time - only the individual is to blame.  I disagree with her comments last time.  She can't have it both ways.

The challenge is that the majority of people are ok.  But a very small percentage of the population can cause a lot of problems (INCL. yesterday's perpetrator).  So messaging in that situation may have to be cognisant of those people, as opposed to someone like Steve who is a decent person.

In other news I have purchased a message gun on a lockdown sale.  I have used it a few times and so far, so good.

watson - Is that something you fire at people who refuse to get the message

I think the tiny percentage of people dumb enough to think revenge is a good idea aren't listening to politicians.

They have had a law change on the books since 2019 they could have pushed through at any time in the last 9 months.  Some of the ones they have decided are more important are ridiculous.  I'm just glad we're no longer paying for 24/7 surveillance.  The 6 people injured is a terrible result but what happened to the terrorist is a great outcome.

I had a shocker of a long run workout attempt today and aborted the workout part.   Only just managed to even get home.  Not sure what the issue was, I prepared as normal although may have needed more pre-hydration with a warmer day than the recent past (yes, only 20C (70F) but it's barely been above 10C (50F) since April).  I don't think the warmth was it.  I guess just a (very) bad day.  If it was a race day I may have struggled to do 1:40.  Motivation isn't helped by talk of being at level 2 until Christmas which would mean no Wellington or Queenstown.  Maybe Selwyn if I'm lucky but most likely it will just be base building time for the full in April.  It will be amazing if that happens, with 2021 being my biggest ever training year, and only one "race" which I only ran as an MP workout.

I think Wellington chance is down to about 20% from my initial 50%.

That's a real bummer... but it does sound like just a very bad day considering how well your training has been going lately.

That talk about some restrictions until Xmas is just scaremongering.  There is no basis to support that, someone picked up on something someone else said in the media and they're just running with it.  The way case numbers are going, things are looking positive, but we've certainly got several weeks more in level 4 in Auckland.  There were rumours that Auckland Marathon was getting close to pulling the pin, but they might still be holding out hope the way things have gone the last few days.  To be honest if it does go ahead I'd seriously consider running it even though I'm (hopefully) doing Nelson 2 weeks later.

And in totally unsurprising news, Cambridge HM (Sept 19) which was hosting NZ HM Champs has been postponed until late November, and NZ HM Champs has been cancelled outright for this year, so my entry got rolled to next year.  So I'm really just hoping we're good by late Oct / early Nov now.

I think you're probably right but nothing would surprise me anymore with the ridiculous response to this virus.

Queenstown I think is 90%, but I feel like Wellington is unlikely.

Wellington is unlikely.  They will have to make the decision a week or two out.

I think Steve should consider racing anything he can over the next few months given the uncertainty.  Small races will happen at Level 2.  Even though it is not the aim, a 5km PR might happen in a park run (assuming Christchurch Park runs happen at Level 2).

I am saying this as Steve has had a really good 2021 training wise, so it would be good to get some race reward.

Quiet week for me. Got the 1st vaccine shot Friday and have felt fine except for the sore shoulder thing.

Father's day today and have a new pair of fuelcell rebels coming. Had an awesome surf this morning with my oldest son.

We should be back to level 2 this week I'm picking.

watson - Yeah, it's starting to feel like I'll just have to take what I can get.

piwi - Still a solid week for a quiet one.  My partner finished her job on Friday and scheduled a week off before starting her next job so we're hoping for Level 2 so we can at least have a couple of nights at Lake Tekapo.  Hopefully we'll get an indication of how long at level 2 - it will probably be the old "review in 2 weeks" but it would be good to know whether I need to keep up the hard training.  I'm finding it tough to go through the last few weeks of race build up yet again not knowing if I'm racing, even though I did know that when I decided to go to Wellington.

I had a decent week, nailed Wednesday, blew up Saturday as previously noted.  I'll probably do shorter, faster reps on Wednesday this week but might request a lighter Saturday run to freshen up.
