Watson - Nice race (certainly on that course), and good job on being so close on that goal (especially without GPS for most of it). Your ability to predict race times is endlessly impressive to me. Looking forward to the RR.

James - Given those circumstances I certainly don't blame you for for not going with Plan C. My HM this weekend largely won't have traffic control either, but there's a world of difference between running in a sleepy town and on back country roads vs in Atlanta. Here's hoping you find a good local 5k or so.

Mark - Nice week. We've yet to hit daylight saving time, but I'm looking forward to it. Now if only we'd stay on it permanently this time around... *starts international DST feud*
Solid score on the Alphaflys. Assuming they're legit given the pricing and sourcing.

Steve - Great week, and quite the impressive LR! Hopefully the race goes ahead (and with appropriately awesome weather).

Flavio - Good week. Sorry about the GI issues and heartburn. Hopefully you can discover and treat/fix the cause.

Zebano - Very good week, especially considering the lack of a LR. Great job nailing that Saturday workout, too.

DWave - Killer week! That Friday tempo + Sunday LR together is pretty darn impressive.
Saw your post in sub 3 regarding the GI doc's nutritional recommendations. For anyone (and certainly for someone of your level of activity) it sounds to me like a recipe for malnutrition, lack of energy, and increased odds of stress fractures and other injuries.

Piwi - I'm going to try the NB Rebel 2 myself, soon - I've got a pair in transit tome right now. Looking forward to testing them from all I've heard recently.

Had my biggest-ever week, including the most difficult LR I've done to date as well. I had a 20 minute HM effort tempo today and I was still feeling that LR, but I've got nothing but easy runs (and some reduced mileage to boot!) until my HM this Saturday.

I do think I have the fitness to set a PR on this course, but it doesn't look like the weather will allow for it. There's a pretty good chance of rain for the days before the race and the morning of the race as well, with the temp and dewpoint both forecasted to be 65F/18.3C. At least it should be nice and cloudy!

Random bit on shoes: Kinda/sorta thinking of trying out a pair of the Asics super-shoes. Not sure I want to just drop that much cash on what could just end up being a test, though.

Hi, just ran 1:23:03 at Hoka Chicago Half Marathon in Jackson Park yesterday. I was doing the Pftiz base building plan (35->60 over 10 weeks) and decided to sign up for this race a week after the plan ended. I only did a few lactate clearing speed workouts (1k @ ~6:20, 600 @ 6:50 x 6). Next Up is a 8 mile race on 10/30 in a forest preserve on crushed lime stone. I'm aiming for sub 50, so we'll see what happens!

The Sky, based on their descriptions. I'm certainly someone who lengthens stride more than increases cadence when speeding up.

Keen huge week great job. Let us know how Rebel 2 go. Asics have some great shoes now. Sarah Hall did well in them at London.

Congrats Timbo great race and very evenly paced except mile 7 ... was that a bathroom break?

Keen - We're awaiting shoe reviews. The Sky as well as the NB Rebel versus the Endorphin Speeds as training shoes. Hell of a week, at least with 7 days you might get lucky and see a change in the forecast. Personally I think 65 and raining would be pretty awesome PR weather but that might not be for everyone.

                1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

I'll definitely post a review of the Rebel 2s if/when I get them. Fedex has had them for 5 days now and they haven't even left the state from which they were dispatched.

I may bite the bullet on the Asics and just order a pair. At the worst I'd either resell them after a run or just use them for workouts. Given the other costs of getting to Sacramento (or Tucson) and all the running I have/will put in before the big race, it's not much more than a drop in a bucket. Not that I wouldn't search high and low for a discount code first...

Zebano - Given the rest of the forecast I'd certainly take some rain. To me, at least, rain at 65* feels much better than no rain but still 100% humidity.

Keen - I have to pop over here because you're training for CIM yet don't live in the marathon thread! Either way, nice weeks lately. I felt good about my upper 70's weeks and it looks like complete amateur hours vs. what you do.

I am interested to see how your MP progresses. I would think you should be able to clock in 6:40-6:45 in training to know that sub 3 is happening, but it looked a bit higher on this latest one. You have a ton of races coming up though that will give you a better gauge on where your fitness in though.

hi there! no, just the casual having to do like a 200 m turn around in a tunnel under a building in chicago causing my garmin to lose it for a short bit of time Sad

                      as for an intro:

32 y.o male, been logging miles here since 2007 when i was a senior in high school. ran xc and track in high school with a PR of 4:44 in the 1600. been running off and on since then with more on than off. Have a bunch of fitbit data that isn't on here because I don't know how to import it Sad

                      Intl. correspondent

Watson - It could be stress, but It’s likely it was some food I ate, who knows, it’s better now.

Omeprazol is helping. I went to the doc yesterday and he recommended 40mg in the morning.

He also requested an endoscopy which I have promptly scheduled for October 20th so I don’t have to think about that for a while (I’m deathly afraid of the thought of an endoscopy, I have a massive gag reflex).

Mark/Steve - If something happened next week which prevented you from running/racing for 6 months, would you be okay with missing the opportunity of racing.

If you’re okay with that then all is well.

Thing is both of you guys are primed and peaking. And for some reason you’re limited to 5k, 10k and half marathons.

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but I know from memory that you guys have been doing strength training lately, so why not try out a 1500?

Or maybe a 3000 if you want a pure aerobic test. Recovery is minimal, you can run it on a Thursday and be good for a long run on Sunday.

I don’t mean to convince you guys of it, just stating there’s more stuff out of the box Smile

Zeb - I’m always impressed with your incredible recovery.

Keen - woah that was a monster week. Re: spending on shoes I figure it’s once every 3, 4 months and it’s the cost of a few meals at the restaurant.

                          Hot Weather Complainer

Welcome Timbo.  Those are some great numbers, and your marathon PR looks set for a take down based on your HM PR.

Corey - Any time I spend a few hours doing physical labour I wonder how anyone who did it full time could ever be a runner.

Flavio - If I got told no races for 6 months right now I would not be happy...and would probably do a half-marathon time trial after all.  The next couple of weeks will give us an idea of the likelihood of any races before Christmas so I'm going to hang in a bit longer.  If I can't do Wellington, Dunedin or Queenstown, there is a chance that the Selwyn Running Festival will run at level 2 on November 7.  They are seeking council permission and will find out today.  It's a small race with 400 entrants across all distances and they're looking at wave starts of 100.  It's also only 30 minutes drive away.  So that may be my lifeline.

Edit:  If all those other races are cancelled, it's possible they'll get more than 400.

Keen - When the mileage king says "Biggest ever week" I know I'm about to read something huge!

Keen - well that was epic!  Well done.

Steve - I'd definitely take Selwyn if that was available, it sounds like they're doing their best to come up with a plan, even if there's a risk of warm weather it's better than no race.  TBH might be worth getting an entry in early in case they have to cap numbers.  Worst case you can probably sell it.

Corey - nice job on the house... I'm with Steve, it's hard to fathom how someone who has a physical full-time job can also fit running in.  There's an elite in Rotorua I follow on Strava who is a builder... and somehow manages to log 140-150km weeks averaging around 4:00/km and that includes a bunch of stuff on trails as well!  Insane.  He's still quite young though so we'll see what happens when he gets a bit older.

Flavio - I'm at peace with not racing for another three months, if that's what happens.  Six, probably not.  I said at the start of the year, if I raced Southern Lakes HM and nailed it, I'd be happy with that, and it's still 100% true.  If this was to drag into next year, that would start to be frustrating.  I don't like my chances of Oct/Nov races but I do think there's a reasonable shot at Omaha HM in Dec.  Hot and slow but beautiful course (and some nostalgia value too as I won it a few years back).  From January it's likely vaccine passports will be in place, enabling large events to go ahead regardless, so I'll be able to race some 10km's over summer and then target a half marathon in autumn, either Christchurch or Waterfront in April or Southern Lakes in May.

Hitting a 1500m or 3000m TT is a decent idea though, may have to give that some consideration.  Athletics Auckland's 3000m champs are normally in Nov and may well be able to go ahead as they're quite a small event.  I did it last year and was not happy with how I went, so there's that too.

Mark - Yeah I'll see what they announce today around running Selwyn at level 2, and then Monday hopefully I'll have an idea about Dunedin which is my preference for November 7.  Wellington in 11 days is still my overall preference so I can have a good day in Queenstown.

I'm much less at peace than you but I haven't had a race all year.  I've foregone a couple not knowing what the future would hold but the Wellington Marathon was the big cancellation that impacted the year given the time I put into training for that.

This morning I ran Flavio's favourite pre-half workout, a 10km tempo at around HM pace.  I did 42:01 for 10km in the middle of a 16km total and it felt very comfortable.  This is why I'm being delusional and clinging to hope for Wellington, I've never been in better shape for a half, including when I ran my PB.

                                5km: 18:34 11/23 │ 10km: 39:10 8/23 │ HM: 1:26:48 9/23 │ M: 3:34:49 6/23
