DWave - I read an article on dcrainmaker regarding the temperature sensor/barometer for garmin 945 & fenix 6 watches being disabled for pool swims via firmware update. It seems that people putting in lots of time recording swims in chlorine water could lead to damaging the barometer/thermometer/altimeter. No issues with fresh/salt water, or spending lots time in the pool without recording (thus leaving that sensor off). I wonder if this is similar to the issue you had with your old watch.
Kiwis - Those updated guidelines (not to mention the old ones) seem to be a tad illogical/arbitrary as well as hard to follow/confusing. Hopefully that gets cleared up soon.
Found a local 10k that fits in perfectly with a scheduled tune-up my coach put in to my training plan. The downside is that it's put on by the same people who cancelled another 10k last month. It's a flat/fast course (two 5k loops), but I'm going hold off on sighing up and keep my eyes open for other options just in case they cancel things again.

Keen - I’m not sure if I’ll go for a 5K PR any time soon. I’m recovering more slowly from last week’s 5K than I did from the previous one, so I don’t want to push again right away, otherwise I'd do the fireman-themed race on the same course in 2 weeks. On November 13, there’s one on a course I haven’t run, with a little more elevation gain than last week’s but apparently not as steep. I’ll probably decide a few days before that race whether to do it or do the Birmingham half a week later.
In case some of you don’t spend enough time thinking about running, I have another book recommendation, Run the World, by Becky Wade. She’s a 2:30 marathoner who won CIM several years ago and has run in our Olympic Trials three times. The book is about her experience in 2012-13 when, after graduating from university, she got a grant to travel the world for a year, running with clubs and individuals in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Ethiopia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, and Finland. In New Zealand she raced the Round the Bays 8.4K, the national championship 1,500 and 5,000 (you don’t have to be a Kiwi), and the Queen Street Golden Mile, ran Lydiard's Waitarua Circuit, and crewed in a multisport coast-to-coast race. It’s an entertaining look at how different running, both competitive and recreational, is in each country.

Watson - I wouldn't get your hopes up just yet. Sport NZ issued updated Level 2 guidelines saying that there was no restriction on the number of participants, subject to maintaining distance where possible. However, the recently-updated official Covid 19 website has this:
"Sporting events that take place outdoors but not within an event facility — for example a road race are considered a gathering and the 100-person limit applies."
The net result was quite a lot of confusion but basically it seems like track events (at a designated track) are fine but road events or something like Parkrun are subject to a 100-person limit. Most - but not all - Parkrun events typically have over 100 and they have no way of tracking numbers until everyone's finished so I'm guessing they'll have to play it safe. Or they might get away with it once then get shut down. There was quite a lot of debate on this on Friday on the Distance Running NZ facebook page.

Me - dropped the mileage back a bit this week, it was a good call as the legs were definitely feeling the cumulative effects of three quite tough weeks. We'll see where this week takes us I guess. I'm still hoping of maybe getting a race in before Xmas and am considering track options as they seem more likely to go ahead. Related to this, I'm considering investing in a pair of Nike Dragonfly's...

Mark - Smart option to freshen up. I think it's possible they'll relax those restrictions as we go on (in the level 2 areas). It's possible Dunedin, Selwyn and Queenstown all go ahead even if we're still in level 2 I think. It's equally possible (actually, probably more likely) that cases spread further in the next 4 weeks and we bounce in and out of level 3 and none of those races go ahead. If that's the case, I'm fairly sure I'll put a full stop on all this half training with another of the dreaded time trials. It's far from ideal but I've got to try and run fast at least once before heading back into marathon training for Christchurch.

James - She sounds very interesting. Someone else to check out is Lisa Tamati, a kiwi Ultra runner. She has a book I think, and was also on the Running Rogue podcast a while back. She has a very interesting story.
me - Started the week (sort of) tapering but with the race cancellation on Monday I ended up with quite a big week. I rolled back my Wednesday workout a bit, and changed up Saturday to a fairly significant hilly run which was a pretty good workout without having to push the paces. Also good practice for Queenstown which has some minor climbs, but nothing like where I ran yesterday.

CK - yup - that chlorine issue is exactly the problem I was having with my previous Garmin, and Garmin told me as much. (For those of you who didn't follow me on Strava a few years ago - my previous Garmin would report insane elevation with each run, because the barometer was completely dried. I'd usually correct it on Strava, but occasionally forget to).
To their credit, Garmin kept replacing the watch for free. But each time they did, I'd experience the same issue within a month or two.

61 miles running, 80 minutes pool-running, and 1000 yards swimming.
M: 5.5 miles (9:40), upper body weights/core, 3.5 miles (9:13) plus drills and 2 strides.T: 4 miles, including one 800m repeat on the track in 3:11 before going home.W: In the morning a second try at a track workout - 8 miles including 3x1K in 4:03, 4:03, 4:01. 4 miles (9:19) in the afternoon.Th: 80 minutes pool-running and upper body weights/core.F: 13.5 miles, including a tempo workout of 1.5 miles and 1 mile at 6:40 pace with 60 second recovery; long rest, and then 3x1 mile in 6:35, 6:31, 6:24 with 2:00-2:30 recovery between each. Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.Sa: 8 very easy (9:16) plus drills, 2 strides, streaming yoga.Su: 13 miles progressive, split as first 4.5 miles averaging 9:12 pace, next 4.5 miles averaging 8:01 pace, and next 4.5 miles averaging 6:54 pace, followed with cooldown jog to make 14, and then leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
If this week looks like it was a convoluted mess, that's because it was.
I think I've mentioned before that I have some balance problems when running that are sometimes better, sometimes worse. On Tuesday, they got really bad, and I was also just struggling to see (granted - it was before sunrise on a foggy morning). I ran the first 800 of the workout and felt like I was going to faceplant so I just went home. I realized that the vision issue might be a migraine (my migraines are essentially painless, just vision loss), so I called my neurologist and got a refill on my migraine meds. Those took care of the shimmering blurry vision issue.
For the rest of the week, I was struggling - I'd feel very unstable at first, and then great by the end of the run. After thinking about it way too much, I suspect it's that my ankles aren't working right - instead of flexing through the ankle and rolling through the foot, my ankles are stuck in one position at first, and then generally releasing and working more fluidly. (This is not a flexiblity/mobility issue - I'm great on that score). So I decided to try a) doing some funny walks pre-run where I walk heel to toe and practice that rolling motion; and b) really thinking about that rolling motion in my feet any time I felt unstable. This seemed to help a lot, so I think that's part of the key.
I saw my neurologist on Friday and he started me on B2 supplements and scheduled me for another EMG. In the meantime I've got a PT appointment on Tuesday to see what else I can do to manage this.
I honestly don't think this is anything serious (if it was, it wouldn't improve as I ran). My hunch is that it's just some minor issues in my ankles/feet, and it's just a matter of figuring out the exact nature of the issue, and then doing the right exercises to rewire stuff so that they're working fine from the start).
Darkwave - I've bought some Dragonfly's (Dragonflies?!) but I had to do it the long way as they're not in stock in my size on the Nike website right now. This means buying them from Running Warehouse US, getting them sent to an Oregon-based forwarding service, and getting them sent to NZ from there. The lack of airfreight right now means I may not actually receive them until November! Anyway good to hear you sorted the balance issue (those can be a bit scary but if you've had migraines before you're probably used to it) and I hope you're on top of those ankle issues soon.
James - good recovery week and thanks for the recommendation. The Queen Street Mile was legendary because it's a big downhill to start. There were some ridiculous times run there.
Steve - that was a decent hilly run on the weekend! One of those climbs alone probably had more elevation than Queenstown half, especially now they've taken out Marathon Hill by the river.
Anyway it looks like club track season is gonna be at better odds to go ahead than road races up here at least until December so I might have to see what's on the cards there.
Watson - looks like you've ditched the hills for the time being? 20 days is a big streak. There is a guy up here who is well over 1,000 now. He was running really well through the middle of the year but he's injured now and he's been putting up like 2km a day just to keep the streak going. Not sure I see the point, myself.
