Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Mark - the hills were mainly for the WUU2k preparation.  I am planning hills on Tuesday or Wednesday.  I bought Asics off Running Warehouse Australia last year, and they could not ship Asics outside Australia, so I had them sent to a forwarding service, being my Sydney based brother.  What is the US forwarding service you use?  How much do they charge?

Darkwave - nice week.  Your race times are so good given you seem to always have health challenges.  The gathering rules in NZ right now are really unclear, my local Parkrun is scheduled for this Saturday, and that is at a public park.

    PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

    40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

    2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

    2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

I use YouShop which is offered by NZ Post (I think the actual operator is a third party provider).

I wouldn't say it's particularly cheap any more.  I think the shipping cost is $10 per parcel plus $7.50 per 500g of weight, as long as you stay below NZ$250.  They levy NZ GST as part of the charges too.  There's also a high value surcharge and duties at various levels too.  If you stay below NZ$400 it's generally not too bad.

Overall it's been pretty reliable for me.  Although these days I only use it when the US retailer won't ship to NZ for whatever reason.

Is the GST just on the forwarding service?  Or do they also charge GST on the goods (i.e. the shoes)?

No they charge GST on the product itself.  So you can effectively add 15% to the price (the same principle applies to Amazon these days though).  If you have a friend or relative in the US, they're the best option!

You Kiwis do know that you have friends in the US - right?

I'm happy to ship stuff if ever needed.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

Thanks very much for the offer Darkwave - I may well take you up on that (unfortunately this time my Dragonfly order was confirmed around 4 hours ago...).

I'll definitely keep an eye on prices and take up this kind offer at some stage - last time I was in the States my usual training shoes were one third the price I pay here.

Flavio - Hope you're enjoying a serene post-race holiday and you're not too drained.  I can't wait to hear the story of the race, the splits kind of tell it but I bet you can add some colour.

Mark, Watson - Thanks!  I've pulled up really sore this time, I think slightly worse than the last time I went up there.

Selwyn Running Festival - They have confirmed they will go ahead at level 2 but only by restricting each event to 99 people.  Do I enter with a chance that I don't use it if Dunedin happens?  Or just cancel Dunedin and focus on Selwyn?  The course in Selwyn is better for speed, but potentially warmer weather.  I think I'll just enter because with all other races cancelled it will sell out and I should be able to transfer it to another person.

Edit:  They're also making it an earlier start, either 8 or 8:30am.  I'm entered.  Yes!

RP - I forgot to mention I really enjoyed your race report.  Your half PR is due for a take down next.

darkwave - Nice week.  Sorry to hear you're having more health issues.  I agree with watson that given the issues you deal with, you run some amazing races.

Steve - so good you're entered for Selwyn.  Is that a half or full?

Flavio - congrats.  The last 6km were clearly a struggle, even so that is a big PR.

watson - just a half. I’ve been focused on half training since the June cancellation. That’s tough enough to maintain with 2 half cancellations in the last month, but no way I could train indefinitely for a marathon. Selwyn’s longest event is the half. I looked at last years’ results and there were only 54 in the half. I expect more this year with everything else being cancelled.

Recovery week for me w/ an attempt at a strava PR that I bailed on early.

                          M: off

                          T: 50 min ez

W: 35 min ez (was supposed to be an hour, but work was crazy)

Th: 1.5mi up + 20km pr attempt (goal < 1:36)  ran 7:20 for 6 mi, 7th mi stomach got very unhappy (7:45) and I bailed. Will have to try this some weekend instead of 4:30 in the morning.

                          F: easy hour

                          S: easy 50 min + strides

S: easy 10 (8:37/mi) ran into a friend I hadn't seen in months and had a good chat. Went mountain biking latter in the day but it started raining so we only rode for an hour.

                          47.8 miles

                          1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

                          zebano

Flavio - congrats on the 10 minute PR! I laughed at your strava description because that's been my exact thoughts every single time I've done a marathon.

                            1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

Kiwis - Hooray for Park Run (possibly) coming back! Still jealous you guys have those. I'll also echo DWave's comment on being willing to ship stuff so you guys can save costs on things.

Mark - Nice cut-back week. You're really one of the few of us who do enough races on a track to really benefit from some spikes. My coach floated the idea of a track series over the summer (which I think would have been great, from an "I've never done a track race" perspective) but I think couldn't get access to some facilities for it.

Steve - Sorry about the race cancellation, but great training week without that coming up. That LR is super impressive!

Watson - Good week. Just took Monday off to have it off, or what? Were you specifically looking to keep up a streak?

DWave - As in sub 3, pretty good week considering the stability and migraine issues. I'm also hoping Mark can report back on the dragonflies. Not so much because I'm considering them for myself, but I just think it would be interesting to hear about from a person I "know".

This past weekend was a rough one weather-wise for pretty much everyone I know who ran a marathon. Lots of too warm and humid. 2:35 marathoners aplenty blowing up to 3:05 or so, with plenty of DNFs. The one guy I know who finished super-strong (2:43-ish PR) was pacing a couple guys to low/mid 2:50's. Both of those guys dropped (one at 14, one at 18), then he started dropped 6 min miles the last 8 and passed a ton of people on his way to a 4th OA finish.

Light week effort-wise, at least. Just the one medium-intensity session midweek. I'm oddly satisfied with the LR, as that was the furthest distance and longest duration I've ever run without stopping outside of a marathon.

Also, I decided to be stupid and try out some Asics Metaspeed Skys (Skies?). I've just put them on for a quick feel, but they seem a bit lesser in volume than my Endorphin Pros (perhaps I should have gone up 1/2 size), but they do feel MASSIVELY bouncier than the Pro. I may not actually try them out on a run for a while. Maybe I'll use them during a (hopeful) 10k in a month.
