Zeb - LOL yeah, I thought that broom handle would break, but it was only a very light weight (3 gallons of 6L each, so roughly 18kg 40lb)

Well if that wind gust is a tail wind you’re gonna run sub 30 😎

Mark - Yeah, catching it is unavoidable, I've always figured I'd limit exposure to have a lighter version so it won't interfere with my training.

I’m glad to know you had some gym equipment home to keep the strength training sessions.

That's a lot of volcanos. Do you guys have like escape routes planned out, or are you fried food regardless of what you do if they ever erupt?

Come to think about it, it's indeed very remarkable that Brazil has no Volcanos nor earth quakes.

You'd think a country that size would have them somewhere.

Keen - you'd be proud of my breakfast. I made a bacon omelete with 3 eggs, then grabbed sourdough bread slices, spread ricotta in them and made a sandwich with the omelete in the middle.

Then a small bowl with 3 spoons of greek yoghurt, added non sugared corn flakes, coconut powder, sliced almonds and oats on top. Not ideal but some progress towards more protein.

Flavio thats some appetite you have

I sometimes have a 3 egg omelet and that is very filling on its own. Good idea on the gym membership. It will keep you motivated. I'm planning to go with my 15 yr old every Saturday. He goes on week days too. I've been using our home gym most days for about 2 months now.

I decided to run straight after dinner last night. 2 beers 🍻 and enchiladas 😋 did not make for a great run 😒

All I have to add to the food chat is that I love food.

I think most of the volcanoes within the city are dormant, with the only real risk being Rangitoto which is off shore?  But not far enough to not impact Auckland.  I guess the good thing with volcanoes as opposed to earthquakes is you usually get a reasonable warning.

9 days to go until my race, and with Covid having made its way to Christchurch, I'm putting it at 50-50 for going ahead.  It's almost like clockwork with my races...at the moment the cases can be traced to their Auckland origin so we are still at an alert level that allows the race to go ahead (a surprisingly and unexpectedly sensible decision).  I think as soon as there are unlinked cases, which is highly possible, then the likelihood of the race happening drops to close to zero.

On my run yesterday when I was expecting us to be in full lockdown by the end of the day I started thinking about courses where I can do a time trial and Hagley Park is really the only option (although technically if we are at level 3 restrictions I'm not supposed to drive somewhere to exercise - screw that).  They've re-paved some paths so there is a nice sealed lap that is bigger than what I did last year, so slightly less monotonous.

I've mostly recovered from the incident on the boat last Sunday, although I still have quite a sore throat which I think is related to the blow my neck took.  My head has been a bit fuzzy and I've had a light fever but I did my last big workout (10km tempo) on Wednesday and while I thought it could impact me, I got through it feeling strong.  I'm glad the race isn't this weekend though as I don't think I'm quite 100% yet.

Edit:  Forgot to include the early forecast!  At the moment it's fine with light winds which is great.  A high of 21C (70F) but that shouldn't be reached during the race (I hope) because that's a bit too warm for me for racing, although with cloud cover that temperature wouldn't be a problem.

Steve - I completely missed your boat story! That really sucks, I'm glad things have gotten better.

My motion sickness seems to be getting worse with age. I had almost the same feelings as you regarding boats. I used to be good on them, then it was "only if rough seas", then it was "take Dramamine and you're okay," but a few years ago I went on one with my wife for our honeymoon, took Dramamine, and was so sick.

it's gotten bad enough now that I went on a swing with my daughter and within 20 seconds I felt very nauseous. You may be going through similar thing with motion sickness and getting worse. It's sad because one thing I really love is roller coasters but each time I get on one, the time I need to recover before going on another is increasing

JMac - Yeah it's not fun!  I love going on Go Karts.  10 years ago on a work trip I got so sick I had to pull off the track early - I didn't think it was possible while actually driving.  I thought that may be a one off but a few years ago I tried again and ended up on the couch for a few hours afterwards.  A mate had the early part of his bachelor party at a go kart track and I decided to stay in the bar rather than have to miss the rest of the evening.

The swells on Sunday were really big, which shocked me as we didn't go too far off shore and it was a very calm day.  But I was still handling it quite well until suddenly I wasn't.

This isn't the first time I've updated the first page and it gets posted on whatever the current one is. Weird.

I'm guessing you're clicking "quote" instead of "modify"?

That thought crossed my mind, but the last couple times it has happened whatever updates I made to the page didn't stick - it just got posted like it was a quote or new comment.

Flavio - That's quite the breakfast!

Motion sickness: I'm fine with roller coasters, boats, and even small (2-4 passenger) airplanes. I'm very much NOT ok with carnival rides. Makes me tons of fun when going to a fair. "Sweetie, I know you think I'm being lame by not going on something exciting like the Stomach Scrambler 3000 with you, but you'll think I'm much worse if I throw up in your hair. How about the Ferris wheel?"

Flavio - if any of them go off in Auckland we are pretty much screwed.  But the ones in Auckland have all been dormant for hundreds of years so the risk is pretty low and the most recently active one is offshore.  Central North Island has seen more activity over the last little while (White Island, Ruapehu).

Steve - keeping my fingers crossed for you.  That's it.  Don't want to say more than that lest I jinx it.

If we can get to the red traffic light there's a reasonable prospect that Night of 5's will run on Tues 21 December, as a smaller club-managed track event.  It would be great if it did.

JMac - so, I saw a facebook post the other day celebrating 30 years since NZer Allison Roe won the New York Marathon.  I believe a certain now-disgraced Alberto Salazar won the mens race that year.  Anyway, it turns out the New York course was actually measured short that year and possibly also a year or two before that - Roe set what was believed to be a new women's marathon world record at the time but it was later invalidated because the course was short, and there were also question marks over Grete Waitz's record which was set at NY in the preceding year.

Apparently not.  Roe did hold the NZ record for almost 30 years until Kim Smith broke it, but that was her 1981 Boston time (2:26) which was slightly slower than her NY time (2:25).

Jmac/Steve - My theory is that we slowly degrade our bodies through ageing and our actions and many of the parts are not replaceable, so over time we start to lose more and more function.

I remember in my 20s choosing a hotel mostly involved finding the cheapest in town. These days I pay attention to the pillows, if it's not the right pillow I"ll have a bad day afterwards.
