I'm really John III (ETA for those who don't know, Jack is a very common nickname for John), so blame my great grandfather for starting it. He was in Ireland at the time. Who knows what he was drinking

I’m happy to call you John III or Milkman…or even the GOAT on this thread? 😁

    5k - 17:53 (4/19)   10k - 37:53 (11/18)   Half - 1:23:18 (4/19)   Full - 2:50:43 (4/19)

However, saying that is a PR when it was clearly a short course and specifically saying I don't care what anyone thinks is pretty damn disrespectful to all the guys who are working their ass off on this thread to run new PRs. It makes a mockery of what they're doing because we can put up whatever times we want as long as we ran a good race? Come on. Why not say you ran a 1:05, we're just making up numbers at this point.

You should've just come out with that at the start then.  It's not "some of the PRs quoted in this thread", it's just one, and I already knew what you thought of that.

The race director said they re-measured the course two days earlier.  People with (supposedly) more accurate GPS watches than me (not all of whom are on Strava) had it fine.  Either way it was 1:05 faster than my previous PB (which was on a previous national championship course), so even if your view on course distance is correct then unless I basically hopped the last whatever-you-think-it-was-short-by on one leg then it was a PB.  Anyway, we've been through this.  Downhill and/or short, I'm owning it (as is Athletics NZ).

You know why?  It because of why I run.  I do it because I enjoy it, and because I'm good at it.  And literally every time I think of that race I get an absolute glow.  Every. Single. Time. I've run good races before, but everything about that day was perfect.  And even more so considering the number of times over the preceding 6 months that I'd thought about quitting entirely.  It's on my sig because it means a shiteload more to me than just a PB.  If you haven't already, I hope some day you run a race that means that much to you that you'll willingly invoke the ire of this forum in this sort of way.

And if you think that somehow reflects on the PB's of yourself and others on this thread, that's on you.  There's an asterisk by it (and in any event the net downhill factor is significantly more material than whatever the course error may or may not have been) and there's zero challenge on the other four in my sig line (unless 25 laps of a track doesn't equal 10,000m any more).  But - and we've had this discussion - if you're running just for PB's, at some point that ends for all of us.

As a footnote, as HM's go I ran 1:09 on a downhill and allegedly short course, 1:10 on an officially measured net downhill course, and 1:12 on an officially measured out-and-back course with an absolute punisher of a hill and far too many turns.  If you want a "hypothetical flat course PB" then it's probably something between the last two on that list, both of which are or were national championship courses and therefore were officially measured.  Ironically we might've found out if Covid hadn't canned National HM Champs this year.  Anyway, you, and Mikkey, and Cal, and whoever else can make what you want of that.  I don't run to get accolades from folks on this forum, although I do enjoy talking about running with most of them.

Can we have a debate about easy pace again please?  We haven't had a good one of those in ages.  Mines around 4:30-4:40/km these days (7:15 to 7:30/mile).

Just an idea, to calm down the outrage from us hobby joggers, maybe put your asterix half, and your PR on a course that's not net downhill.

I'll consider it.  But I tend not to live my life based on whether or not a particular action will cause outrage on the internet.

It's clear your approach to PRs has a very "personal truths" vibe to it. That's a shame. No point in debating if that's the case. Good luck the rest of the year.

My approach to one PR, you mean.

Anyway, we went through all this 6 months ago (I think your words at the time were along the lines of 'your call whether you label it a PR or not' although your opinion at the time was pretty clear).  Since then there's been plenty of other worthwhile discussions.  I'm not sure why you've decided to revisit it now.

It is pretty easy to cause outrage on the internet.

Jmac - you have been a really good poster, but in this case I think you should let this go.

I just showed my partner the last page or so and she said this is worse than a dressage group…I think darkwave especially will understand how big a criticism this is

I looked at the Strava of a few runners at the time and the distance jumped around a bit but was consistently around 21.15-20km. So it’s a net downhill course but unlikely to be short which is acknowledged in Mark’s signature so I’m not sure what the issue is? Also, looking at the course profile, there’s enough climbing to make me think, for me, a flat course would be preferable anyway. That 1:12 in Dunedin on not an easy course clearly shows 1:09 is possible on an easier course.

Also, not sure piling on a dude who’s been locked in his house for 10 weeks with no end in sight is a great look for such a usually supportive group.

It’s ok. The sun came out properly today for the first time in like 10 days (I’m not kidding… the last 6 weeks have basically ended an 18 month drought up here).
