Random personal observation: I got bored and decided to check my running logs for the past couple years and discovered that year-to-date I have done the same number of runs as I did all last year and that my current mileage is .11 mi less than all of last year. And I'm purposefully skipping an (optional) double today that would put me well ahead of last year's mark simply because I don't want to.
Also interesting to me is that my average HR and distance per run has been decreasing steadily since 2017 (I blame doubles for both, to an extent).

Cinnamon - yep I have thanks! Good stuff.

Keen - that's a crazy stat.  I mean, you've still got almost 2 entire months to go (albeit some of that may be a bit lighter after your race) and you've been the thread mileage king since well before this year.

I'm interested to see where my year ends up.  I think overall total mileage will be a bit short of last year (which was essentially 9 very big months of marathon training and 3 terrible ones) which is not really a surprise given how last year's (over)training played out.  But 2021 won't be that far behind, and the average pace is likely to come out a lot higher.  The average distance per run (currently 14.4km / 8.9 miles) is also likely to be at an all-time high for me.

Keen - Crazy how you've massively increased already insane numbers.  This bodes very well for CIM - personally I'd have a steeper taper than you have planned, but those final weeks will probably feel like nothing given what you're used to.

The weather forecast for Sunday has improved again - now showing mostly cloudy which will help counter the much earlier sunrise which can make it feel warmer than the temperature with the high sun.  Northeasterlies have changed to "breezes" now so it really could not be better and shouldn't change too much with only 3 days to go now.  I'm feeling reasonably confident when I think about the training behind me, and especially how comfortable my goal pace started to feel about 6 weeks ago.  I think if Dunedin had gone ahead on the original date of September 12 I may not have been quite ready, so maybe things have worked out for the best (assuming no Covid debacles in the next 3 days).

Wow, I just checked my stats and I will go past 2020s mileage during my race on Sunday.  I guess this isn't a surprise with marathon training without a race, and lots of build ups to races but no race and therefore no recovery periods.

Steve - I've been trying to avoid commenting on your race to avoid jinxing it!  That forecast is looking really good, as good as you could get at this time of the year tbh.  I had a look at the course and even if there are some light NE breezes, you're not going to be dealing with them for long given it's a multi-lap course, and they'll be behind you on that very slight uphill over the first part of each lap.

TBH given the way your training has gone, and particularly the longer runs with large tempo blocks that you have nailed, you should absolutely feel confident going into this.

Mark - Yep, the 5km lap does kind of take out the wind factor but lighter is still much preferred.  I really shouldn't say that with 3 days to go the race surely must happen....so I won't.

Okay, my totals weren't quite right because I didn't filter by running.  I'm actually just over 100km behind my 2020 total so I should end up topping that by a few hundred.  I'll be starting my next block of marathon training at the start of December after 2-3 weeks of keeping it light - partly race recovery but also freshening up after a training block that technically started in February.

Thanks Mark.  Good luck watson.  That forecast looks good.  Mine is about 13C with cloud cover, albeit with 22km/h wind now.  That's not exactly what I'd like but maybe it will stay light until later.  The course doesn't go directly in the direction of the wind, and doesn't have long straights so hopefully it won't have an impact.

Flavio - Let me be the first to accuse you of sandbagging with a goal of "only" sub 40, Superman costume or no.
Zach Bitter mentioned on a podcast recently that Altra has been working on some sort of "super shoe" and he has tested it since at least April. I'll probably be pretty curious to try it whenever it gets released, though given that so many of theirs are pretty low stack I'm not sure they have much room to work with in terms of fitting in a plate unless they also go with a more maximalist design.

Steve & Watson - Glad it looks like both of you will have favorable conditions this weekend. Best of luck to you both.

I've recently discovered that plated shoes are GREAT for gravel roads. It really sucks for you foot to land with your heel directly over a big, pointy chunk of gravel but having a nylon or (especially) carbon plate completely eliminates that pain.

Keen - Guilty as charged, I'm intentionally sandbagging that one, though I might thrown down some fast Ks at the end. Not sure how much I slowed in these weeks though, we'll see. I won't be able to do any significant workout, it will really be off of baseline aerobic capacity.

Altra will likely use the Paradigm as a base, it's pretty high stack at 34mm (Link, I promise it's not Rick Astley this time)

I’m sure you can buy a good quality compression Superman outfit that will make minimal difference running wise. Maybe the red cape will slow you down by about 10 seconds?

Flavio - If you’re going to be dressed as Superman then it would look ridiculous if a superhero ran anything slower than 38min?

Flavio - I think it's sensible to sandbag given the impact of the marathon and giving us a Gaga outfit is a small price to pay for playing it safe.

I wish my race was today, no wind, cool with cloud cover.  The only difference tomorrow will be a bit more wind.  This morning I did some strides, and used the Asics GT-2000 for the warm up then put on the Endorphins for the strides.  Wow, what a difference.  The strides were faster than I wanted but didn't feel like it.  Tomorrow I think I'll do my 1-2km warm up with strides in my bricks then swap into the racing shoes just before the briefing.
