Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Does rule 1 actually apply to a tune up race? I mean if you've got new race shoes a short tune up race is really the ideal place to try them out. I think I wore my endorphin pros for the first time at a 5k.

Hmm. That's a good point.  I would consider any race to be a race and therefore Rule 1 applies.  Normally I use a workout to test out new race shoes.

Piwi - haha that's classic.  I never caught the ferry as I've been able to catch the bus since the race starts on the Shore.

Out in the suburbs here pre-dawn with no people around makes for great running.

Auckland city is a bit different.  Tamaki Drive is fine, it starts on the very edge of the CBD but it is a popular cycle and walking/running route too so there's enough people around that hopefully everyone can feel safe even at 5:30am.  The inner city area, especially K Road and Queen St north of Wellesley is pretty dodgy around that time though.

Steve - I run out at Whenuapai sometimes which has a lot of countryside.  If someone out there rolled up next to me in a car I'd be shitting myself.

Zeb The black ice usually happens overnight when it rains, then freezes early morning. It typically melts around lunch time and everyone can go back to driving like idiots without ice on the road. I'm the idiot driving around the idiots who don't drive like idiots when there IS ice on the road.

steve I'd be hard pressed to find a flat race for most events. They would have to be "relatively flat" but even then it's just such a variety of elevations it would be hard. Even the San Francisco and Oakland marathons/half marathons aren't flat. Bay to Breakers in SF isn't even flat and it is a 12k

I have done a relay where part of it goes through downtown Lake Tahoe (nice place to visit if you're ever nearby) and the year I ran it there was a girls night out/bachelorette party stumbling down the road, along with the typical "it's midnight on a Friday LETS PARTY IT'S TAHOE!" crowd. Part of it you run on the only sidewalk available which passes every bar imaginable. I had one guy yelling "GET OUT OF THEIR WAY THEY'RE RUNNING A RACE!" as another guy walked out to puff a cigarette and blew A FAT cloud of smoke out as he said "whhuuuuuuuuuuutttt?" No crime on the loops I run, however I'm still waiting to catch the car burglars on a run. I think they usually park around the corner so I'd obviously chase them down as much as possible. I'm weird like that.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Lots of car burglars in Hobsonville Point where I do a lot of running.  New, master-planned suburb with limited garaging and offstreet parking, close to the motorway = primetime.  Actually saw some guys unsuccessfully trying to break into a car once at 5:30am (in summer too, so this was only just before dawn!) and then scarper when they set the alarm off.  There was a quite clearly stolen and abandoned car on the footpath the other morning as well.

Today I Learned "scarper" means "to run away."

The 2022 thread is going to require a thesaurus, or at least a list of words at the beginning used within the thread for those unfamiliar to cross reference.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Mark - yeah, but these infidels don’t consider anything under 26 miles as a proper race, no tapering, using new stuff on the day of the race, running long runs the day before, running 3 short races on the same day. Blasphemy, I know.

Jmac - I agree with you, 40 and rainy is the worst. I faced that weather when we went to Belfast and I noped back home after 3 minutes. I had no proper clothing for that kind of weather.

Not sure how you can watch TV on a treadmill, if I so much as divert my look slightly to the side on a treadmill I get dizzy. Gotta keep looking forward like a race horse.

Remember that Minnesotan who participated in this forum and would play video games while on the TM!

Piwi - I think you might be the only normal person on this board, the rest of us are the nerdy kind of nerd.

Video games on the treadmill? I don't know if I'm appalled or impressed. I don't believe it's really possible. I had my bike on the trainer last year and sat in the aero position playing chess  for about 5 minutes and immediately lost 3 games, you just can't give it any proper focus at an effort above a walk. Similarly I've seen people reading but they're never above 4 mph (15 min/mile).

Flavio - Just wait until those guys discover 50 milers so they can look down on the mere marathoners.

I've just remembered his name, Brent Hanson. He would run a lot in the TM due to the weather in his area

Yes, Brent played NBA live by memory.  He did a lot of 50-70 mile weeks on the treadmill in winter.

The one who was really impressive was Under slept dad who was in Montreal and consistently ran outside at - 40.

So I’m in Queenstown for race weekend despite it being canned. It’s been good to run on different parts of the course to formulate a strategy for next time. Even on the flatter parts towards the end of the race, it’s not that easy to go fast with all the small ups and downs and winding trail.

I also took a look at the hill that was the last straw for me last year. I definitely didn’t imagine how hard it was. I didn’t run it but walked it when I went to get breakfast for my partner. It’s hard to even walk down at any pace, and after 12km or so of lots of small rises, no wonder it hurt. Hopefully they take it back out next year but either way I’ll need a conservative strategy which will hopefully get me a Queenstown PB and a better experience. Even with pretty good weather, the wind off the lake is still strong in places.  I got to walk that part because we had to stay in a hotel on the first night because my partner’s parents had to isolate while waiting for Covid results which came back negative.

There were lots of people doing a virtual race, some doing the exact course. The best I’ve seen on Strava is a 2:49 for the full which is a great effort going solo on that course. I also saw a girl claim a new PB with a 1:34. I looked at the analysis and elapsed time was 1:37 so she obviously stopped for a drink or toilet stop. I’m pretty sure no-one on here would claim that one and I hope for her sake she doesn’t join this thread! Each to their own though.

Was she claiming 1:34 or 1:37 for the PB? When it is not a race, Strava will present moving time.
