She was claiming 1:34 which is clearly not legit. It wasn’t marked as a race so I guess that’s why it shows as 1:34. When you dig in it does show a half-marathon best effort of 1:37.

Shoutout to RP on his dress rehearsal workout. Dude is legit 👌

Actuary? Isn’t JMac one of those?

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

9:07 tonight for a new 3000m PB. Conditions not too bad, bit warm and breezy but certainly better than last week. Very happy with the result, might be the last race for the year so good to end on a high!

              She's a dirty little cheater Steve 😁

I find this discussion fascinating in light of recent conversations.

I'd argue that, if she's just claiming a PB, she's not cheating.  There are no universal rules for claiming PBs/PRs - everybody's got their own standard.  She has rules for her own PBs that are laughable by our standards, apparently.  But as long as she's not breaking her own rules, or submitting the 1:34 as her time in the virtual race (presuming that the virtual race specified elapsed time), she's not cheating.

I should mention - I know a few people, all relatively non-serious athletes, who claim PBs based on treadmill times.  And I even know one person who claims running PBs based on use of the elliptical.  As long as you're not submitting it in a competition against others, it's not cheating.  No different from me claiming a PB squat when I haven't necessarily hit the form requirements for a squat, and the plates and bar haven't been checked to confirm accuracy.

Marky_Mark- congrats on the (legitimate) PB!

...You guys catch the blood moon eclipse last night ? Was it just over NZ ?

My wife saw the late part of an eclipse at 5am Friday morning our time; not sure whether that was last night your time.  It was impressive enough that she told me about it yesterday.

Darkwave I was joking on the cheater comment however taking a rest during a timed run and only counting moving time is pushing the boundaries 🙃

James it was probably best viewed in this part of the world as I haven't heard much from others overseas. Apparently an 800 year event for the time it lasted. I viewed it for 3 hours 2kms out at sea in the dark in a kayak . There were hordes of people on the beach when I got back in.

Mark that is flying ! Congratulations.

Great job, Mark.  Always nice to end the racing year on an up note.

The walk breaks seem to be working for me, as my upper hamstring felt slightly better by the end of the week and I went a little longer on the treadmill and a little faster in the park.  Trees in the park are orange and yellow and red, so it’s very colorful, if a bit chilly for my taste when it's windy.  I suppose I’ll get acclimated after a few weeks, especially if I get outside more often.

Sun - 8.8 miles very slow on treadmill (102 minutes) + 0:40 walk breaks after each 6:00

                    Mon - 15 minutes swimming

                    Tues - 7.5 in park @ 8:19 + 0:50 walk breaks after each 1.5 miles

Weds - 9.3 very slow on TM (108 minutes) + walk breaks

Thurs - 9.3 very slow on TM (108 minutes) + walk breaks

                    Fri - off

                    Mother of Cats

Posting my week early, since I'm not doing anything tomorrow.

30 miles running, 4:30 hours pool-running, and 1000 yards swimming.

                      M: 90 minutes pool-running and upper body weights/core.
                      T: 10 miles, including a track workout of 5x800, 400, 2x200 in 3:48, 3:38, 3:24, 3:20, 3:19, 95, 48, 49. Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
W: Streaming yoga and 10 miles very easy (9:26) plus drills and two strides.
Th: 90 minutes pool-running and upper body weights/core.
F: 10 miles, including 8 Iwo Jima hill repeats; followed with with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
                      Sa: 1 hour pool-running.
Su: Off (heading up to cheer at the Philadelphia Marathon)

Things are still trending upwards. I attempted a track workout on Tuesday, and managed to kinda do one, albeit with issues. Legs still just didn't want to work. No pain or soreness or fatigue and my heart rate was low; the legs just wouldn't move. The best way to describe it - have you ever tried to run in a pair of pants that are too tight, so that they restrict your range of motion? That's pretty much exactly what it felt like. Hence an 800 in 3:48... However, they did improve as I went.

(and in answer to the obvious questions plus the ones I have been asked before - yes, I take magnesium, I foam roll, I stretch, I do a 25 minute mobility session pre-run. I run at least 3 miles before a track workout, including some faster running and plenty of running drills. While I've been dealing with this I've also gotten a deep tissue massage and visited the chiropractor - both helped maybe slightly, but not too much. I am trying all the things.)

Since things are improving, and since I passed the neurologic exam last week, I've decided to take a break for a few days from running. Basically I'm overdue to take a few days off of running/training, but I haven't dared take a break since everyone thought my issues were neurological, and also since everything seems to get worse when I do less. Now I feel safer in taking a few down days, so that's my plan. I'm not taking a full week off, but 3-4 days with an hour of pool-running or less, starting today, shouldn't hurt and will be a nice reset.  I am getting my Covid vaccine booster on Wednesday afternoon, so that may end up with some additional downtime..

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

All  - thanks for the support, it was a decent way to end the year especially considering a month or two ago it looked like there might not be any races at all until 2022.

Darkwave - glad to hear things are improving for you.  Hopefully a few days off will refresh you as well, I understand totally why you didn't consider that until now.  Enjoy watching the Philadelphia Marathon!  I miss big road races Sad

James - good week, love those autumn colours.

Race report, McKinnon Shield (Meet 1) 3000m

Good on Athletics Auckland for finding a way to run their regular season meets despite current gathering limits being at 25.  This required splitting the meet across three venues (normally it's held at one), as well as three separate warm-up areas on the infield to keep athletes separate.  The 3000m and a couple other middle distance events are held at Millennium track, which conveniently is only 10 mins from my house and is my usual training track.

It's a relatively warm 23C and there's a gusty NE breeze, which is not ideal but tends to be limited to the bottom corner of the track, rather than the straights.  Overall it's definitely better than last week's TT conditions though which were windy and wet.  I do a short warm-up jog with Simon and Nick from the Owairaka club, and Wim and then some dynamic stretching.  Then we move to our allocated infield slot to spike up (Dragonfly time!) and do a few strides on the grass while waiting for the race to start.  Each heat is limited to 10 and allocated based on seed times, so I'm with a bunch of probably fast young guys, plus the masters contingent of me, Simon and Nick.  I figure I'll likely be one of the slower runners in the heat albeit there shouldn't be too much of a gap.

We assemble on the start line and then we're off.  The first 2.5 laps feel pretty solid despite the fact we took off a bit quickly, and the first km was bang on 3:00 which is maybe a couple of seconds too hot.  The young guys always tend to start fast, cruise the middle, then kick at the end, whereas I am much more of an even-pace runner.  The breeze is a bit intermittent but not too bad, although it does feel very warm.  We were all given stick-on numbers, most runners lost these in the wind on the first lap or two, mine stayed put until around lap 5.  I was towards the tail end of the pack so I couldn't really see what was happening up front.  I haven't run in the Dragonflies a lot either so it's more about focusing on a rhythm.  I'm just behind Simon and Nick.

Coming around the top corner, I get some great cheers from my family each time, which is always a nice boost.  Around lap 3 or 4, the young guys felt like they backed off a bit (as predicted!) so I was still able to sit close to them, albeit it does feel like I'm having to work to hang on to the pack.  One of the young guys dropped back around this point, then towards the end of lap 4, Simon unexpectedly did the same.  The second km split was 3:04 which was probably about right.  The effort difference between the front straight (into the wind) and the back straight (tailwind) is noticeable so I focus on using the back straight to recover slightly rather than forcing it.

With 2.5 laps to go I know it will be hard work but I'm a chance of a PB although it's close (my watch is sitting on 3:03/km average).  Around this point Nick put in a big surge and puts maybe 5m on me, so he's obviously feeling good.  Simon has picked up the pace again and is just in front of me.  I'm really just focusing on hanging in there and keeping the rhythm.  With 2 laps to go, I tell myself, JMac style that "it's just an 800m repeat".  Soon enough, there's only one lap to go, and once I'm around the bottom corner I try to kick it up a gear with 300m to go as there's definitely a shot at a PB.  Hitting the home straight, I put as much of a sprint effort in as I can even though my lungs are burning now, Simon is maybe 2m ahead of me so I focus on (unsuccessfully) trying to catch him.

Crossing the line, I stop my watch and see it's 9:07!  Stoked to run a PB, especially having not raced in spikes for 3 years.

It's a nice way to finish the year, especially considering that a month or so ago the prospect of getting any actual races in before Xmas seemed pretty slim.  Also, given that this time a year ago I was pretty broken and wondering whether I had any future in running at all, it's good encouragement for races in the early part of next year.  Special thanks to Flavio for encouraging me to have a crack at this distance which I'd never tried before, it's like 5km but with less pain and I've got no doubt it'll help me with 10km races coming up.

Mark - great track race, and good week.

Darkwave - I am wondering if you should ditch the pool running, so that your completely not training for 3-4 days?  But keep massage and stretching going?

My week was pretty good.  Monday morning was after dropping the car off at the mechanics in case anyone is wondering why a run of less than a mile.  This morning was fairly hard, at the end I noticed a slightly pulled quad, but I think it's very minor.

Watson - solid week there.  I did notice that very short run on Strava and was hoping that you weren't injured!  So that's good news (as long as the mechanic trip wasn't too expensive, of course).

It's fairly expensive (voltage regulator replacement).  But it is what is.
