Mark - Nice race.  Enjoyed your race report.  Seeing partner and family several times during a race really is a boost.  I know we're all amateurs, but the people who see the effort we put in are the best supporters.

Watson - Bugger about the car but better than you needing repairs.  Nice building back week too.

Darkwave - You're doing amazing.  Really good week, and positive signs.  You work so hard to overcome the rough breaks you get, it's so impressive and inspiring.

James - Nice week and great to hear the hammy is improving.  Hope the colder weather doesn't impact that too much.

me - Another light week.  It's 20 weeks until the marathon so the slow build is about to start but nothing too big too early.  I feel freshened up but the slow build will enhance that.

As I previously posted, my easy runs in Queenstown have been a great reminder for next year that I need to forget PB or close to it and be sensible.  Please remind me if I forget.  My "easy" 10km yesterday was a bit too fast for easy pace and I'm sure JMac will be happy to remind me if he's lurking. The depressing part of that is I ran the first 5km on the last 5km of the race course, and the segments tell me I ran faster yesterday at no man's land pace/slightly faster than easy, than I did while crashing in flames in the race last year.  Oh dear.

Piwi - I have not seen the eclipse, but I’d always a fun event.

Mark - Once again a great result. Racing is something we may have taken for granted in the past (I certainly did), so now any opportunity to race is a great day.

Your race report tells me you nailed the effort, with some intense suffering in laps 5 and 6 and then you somehow recover when it’s time to run the last 400.

Having your family there is just ice on the cake.

James - I love these tropical places where the tree leaves change color, I find it quite beautiful and I will often take a picture.

I remember when I visited the White House and then spent like 60% of the time taking pictures of the trees on the other side of the street.

DW -Here’s to this rest helping you feel recover and perhaps at least reduce the symptoms.

Steve - Nice week and it was good that you got to travel a bit.

Me - Just 3 runs as I took yesterday off as "taper". The 10k race was just as expected, a hard 10k tempo, maybe slightly harder. I may have run some tangents badly cause the course ran 160m long and as a result I missed the sub 40. I'm glad I wore the costume LOL so the Gaga challenge is already paid. I started further back than usual so I could pass people all the way along the way. That cost me the first km but made the entire race much more fun. It also gave me the idea of running some other race with a turtle costume 😈

I posted some pictures on Strava. The city was gorgeous, I managed a picture when the full moon was still high.

It was super fun and all along the way people were joking and shouting out to me, it was cool to interact and joke back with everyone.

I'm certainly very far from PR shape, so we'll rebuild slowly. This last week felt better already.

James nice week. Did you shift to a new state ? I forget sorry but you downsized with your home recently right ?

DW glad you feel better. The rest days are a good idea. You do alot of training and your body might be calling out for a rest.

Mark awesome on the 3000m. The spikes were good obviously. Maybe a sub 9 is possible in the new year ?

Steve I haven't been to Queenstown yet but it sounds beautiful although expensive.

Watson hope that hammy and car are good now.

Flavio strava says sub 40 so that's kiwi certified .  Thats impressive considering you are in marathon recovery mode.

It's pretty obvious that 1st km hurt you.

Another 30 mile week for me. All easy pace. That's about 11 weeks like that. I sometimes chuck in a fast last km just to make sure I can still run under 4 mins.

I watched the D1 x country yesterday. Connor Mantz won in 28.30 very impressive.

Cooper Teare crawled across the finish line with glycogen depletion like you see in marathons.

I haven't seen that in a 10k before. These guys push hard though and he's a miler.

No, that was Corey (Cfarr) who downsized and moved a short distance in the same state.  He's in South Carolina, which is just northeast of Georgia where I am.  To complicate things for you, my son goes to university in South Carolina, the same university where his son graduated from earlier this year.  Also, I've been planning to run a half in South Carolina that has been postponed four times in the last two years.  At least neither of us knows anyone named Nathan Jones.

Steve - hope you enjoyed Queenstown, I really enjoyed your Strava pics.  Actually haven't been into Queenstown itself in ages as we've tended to bypass it and head straight to Wanaka!

Flavio - gold star for the costume effort, it sounds you had a lot of fun with it.  Good to hear the body is starting to feel better too.

Piwi - Theo Quax had a pretty epic blow-up too, lost 71 places between the 5k mark and the end!

9:07 tonight for a new 3000m PB. Conditions not too bad, bit warm and breezy but certainly better than last week. Very happy with the result, might be the last race for the year so good to end on a high!

I saw the eclipse! Unfortunately our google-fu failed us and said it would be visible between 1-3AM so my kids set their alarm for 1AM. We went out and it had barely started, you had to wait until 1:30 to really see it here. The twins went back to bed and I told them I'd wake them at 3 but when I went in and tried to get them up they just covered their heads under their blankets and slept on so I stepped outside and enjoyed the eclipse for a bit.

Awesome race. How were the Dragonflys? It sounds like you didn't even notice them.

DW Yes, I've absolutely had that where my legs just won't go. I'm particularly prone to it when I try to run really early in the morning. Sounds like a good time to cut back and reset.

Watson That's a speedy week. Shame about the car

Flavio - Looked like sub 40 on strava? Good run if you consider all the back issues lately!

James Glad your finding ways to manage that Hammy. Hopefully it gets better

My week is barely worth mentioning

              Off

              Tues: 6.8 + 4.1 double

Wed: 8.1 w/ 5xKM on 400 recovery. 3:59, 3:57, 3:48,  3:46-- coach wanted me to to start slower than current 5k pace and end around vdot  (3:53) but I really wanted to see what sub-19 pace felt like. Honestly not sure I could hold that for a full race, it's a bit scary but sometimes you gotta shoot for the sun and see if/where you fall.

              Thur: 8 easy

Fri: 5.5 smooth legs felt really really good today.

Sat: 4.7 legs did not feel good, gut did not feel good, legs wouldn't turn over during warmup so I called off the planned easy workout.

Sun: off - RHR was way high, I felt off and opted to just skip a day rather than force things. By the afternoon I felt a bit better but I stuck by my decision, especially since sustained winds were over 20mph.

37.3 miles -- coach planned for me to run 50 fwiw.

Race day is Thursday and I'm getting excited. I'm also dreading it because a few days back the forecast was 32F and minimal wind and now it 20F and 10-15mph wind which is a whole different ballgame. I'm chugging the vitamin C at a prodigious rate and just hoping that I'm healthy on Thursday morning.

              1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

Mark it looked warm in that D1 x country. They give it so much effort because it's a prestigious team event. I like watching them all collapse over the finish while the officials try and clear the chute. One lady official literary dragged a guy off

Zeb we had a much more leisurely viewing of 9pm. Good luck with your race.

Flavio you look way too happy. Must have been sandbagging

Mark - Look at you, setting new PRs left and right! Enjoyed the RR.

Steve - 20 weeks is a LONG time before a race like that. Plenty of time to build up slowly and finish strong.

Flavio - 40:10 is well under the equivalent for a 20 min 5k! Well done, and I imagine it must be rather fun to run in a costume.
ETA: Just saw the picture Piwi posted - you're taking it WAY too easy if you can manage a smile like that!

Piwi - Trucking along with some solid base building, very nice.

Zebano - I sure hope you don't come down with anything, especially this close to your race! I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do out there.

I'm finally finished with my last big week and it's all taper from here! Definitely looking forward to the 5k in a few days, but the forecast is looking worse. The course is essentially a rectangular lollipop, with all but ~100m of the first 2k being into what is forecasted to be a 20mph/32kmh north wind. Hopefully there will be someone for me to draft!

Keen - Another huge week, I'm really excited about CIM!  Can you update the front page for my one and only race...you've got my result in the target column   Target was 1:29.24, result was 1:29.32.  Yep, my coach is slowly building the mileage and I won't get back to my fairly consistent average week of 80km for a few weeks yet.

Flavio - Great race and costume.  I do agree you look a bit too fresh, how far in was that photo? Apparently this thread is not very serious and make up our results as we go though so maybe that is the right amount of freshness!

Zebano - Still a pretty solid week.

Mark - Yep, Queenstown is amazing.  A lot has closed down unfortunately but there was a buzz in town with a lot of runners making the trip anyway.  A lady at check in at the airport guessed why I'd come and thanked me for coming even though the race wasn't on.  piwi the hotel we stayed in on the first night while we waited on my partners Dad's Covid test was only $130/night and was really nice, albeit in Kawarau Village rather than in town.  We're lucky we have her parents to stay with though, they have a really nice house on the hill in between Queenstown and Frankton and a couple of rooms downstairs they usually run as an Air BnB.  If you did make the trip I might be able to hook you up.

Reading the front page is interesting for our goals for the year.  A particularly depressing quote from Mark:

We are pretty lucky here in NZ that Covid has been contained at the border and races are currently going ahead as normal.  That could all change of course but at the moment I'm optimistic that most races should happen in 2021.  At the moment the goal race is Southern Lakes Half Marathon on May 1 (I've wanted to do this race for years and would've run it last year but for Covid), and then I'll likely target National Road 10k Champs in early September.

And change it did...but it's great you got Southern Lakes, especially with the tons of extra pages it generated and will no doubt continue to generate.

These are awesome. But way too many smiles and thumbs. You definitely didn't see Jesus on this run.

TBH I think that's a good thing.  Attempting a genuine race effort relatively soon after a marathon could well end in misery (it certainly did for me).  Might as well have some fun!

Flavio - hail Superman!  Love the pics!

Zebano - I think good call to skip that Sunday run.  If you're not feeling it AND the weather is windy and miserable, you just know it's gonna be unpleasant.  Hope you're feeling better soon.  And yeah, I really didn't notice the Dragonflies during the race which I guess is a good thing.  They seem to help you roll through your stride quite naturally.

Steve - glad you enjoyed the trip.  It's such a nice place to run as well.  It looked like a lot of other runners still went down there and enjoyed themselves.  This shoulder season will be particularly tough on businesses there I'd say but at least summer should be OK for them.

Heh, yeah that quote is amusing in hindsight.  At least we got 7 months or so of relative normality here and most of us got a proper race in at some point.  Hopefully given vaccination rates we should be mostly good for races next year under the new traffic light system (orange light = races, red light = maybe small races).  I'll travel out of Auckland if I need to.  On that note, reasonable odds I'll do Southern Lakes again next year (once they announce the date...).  I'm feeling in a much better place than I was this time last year, so with some decent training through summer I think there's a reasonable shot I could go even faster - and frankly it's a perfect excuse for a trip to Wanaka and just a stunning course.  So no doubt that'll be good for the forum page count again...

Keen - on the downhill stretch now!! Yay!! Sucks on that weather forecast for your 5k though.  Might simulate the misery of the tail end of a marathon well though.

Speaking of next year... we should start thinking about a new thread boss dictator overlord supreme commander.  Zebano, Darkwave, James and RP are all fairly long-standing members who haven't had a turn, albeit RP is mainly on the marathon thread at the moment.  Or someone from the Board could have a second turn, I think Flavio and Piwi would be the two whose original reigns of terror / benevolence have now faded into the past.  To be honest Flavio's recent superhero turn may have put him in the box seat to inject some fun into the forum!
