Noooo. You should have chosen NYC.

Steve - run a qualifying time and do Boston 2023. You can then take the train down to NYC for an extended stay. I think there will be a good number of us targeting that Boston so it'll be fun to meet a bunch of folks.

I haven't kept up with the latest post-2020 qualifying standards but I really doubt I would hit the standard.  Heh, I also don't know what Chicago requires so possibly should have googled before writing this comment...

I'd love to run NYC over any other race I think but Chicago looks great course-wise.  I wouldn't run on a cheater course like Boston or New York....

If I do come to Chicago I expect there would be another NYC visit.

RP - this isn't the COVID thread, but I'd still like to correct what you said without yelling at you like people tended to do. This was something I originally didn't understand as much either (i.e. why do I care if other people are vaccinated as long as I am?)

You are absolutely correct that vaccinated people can catch COVID and spread it. I think evidence points to them spreading it a lower rate GIVEN they have the virus, but let's put that aside and assume they spread it exactly the same rate GIVEN they have the virus. Even given that, vaccinated people spread COVID less than unvaccinated.

Here's a simple way to think about it. Imagine as a vaccinated person, you will be infected 25% of the time you are "exposed" to COVID, be it from a person with the vaccine or without the vaccine. You've decided to go to a stadium to watch your favorite game of cricket. One of them is 100% vaccinated. The other is 0% vaccinated. Which stadium do you think increases your exposure to COVID, and therefore the number of times/people you will be exposed to?

Clearly it's the stadium that is 0% vaccinated, as the number of people with COVID in that stadium will be higher than the stadium that is 100% vaccinated (vaccine efficacy around 75%-95% causes that to happen).

That is generally why some people only want to be around other people who are vaccinated. If the vaccine was 100% effective, then you would be correct that it doesn't matter at all. But they're not, so the goal is to "reduce" your exposure to the virus to reduce your chances of being infected.

All of that being said - I am NOT commenting on whether it should be mandated or not. Just trying to correct the fact that it is not correct that vaccinated and unvaccinated spread COVID at the same rate. They only (may) spread it at the same rate GIVEN they are infected. That given probability (conditional) is vitally important in understanding this whole thing.

That's true, NYC is a net downhill of 3 meters. Definitely a cheater course. Sorry for suggesting it.

In terms of qualifications though, for some reason I thought you were late 30s, I didn't realize you are going into the 45-49 bucket for Boston 2023! Qualifying time is 3:20, so anything around 3:15 and you're guaranteed to get in (this year there was no buffer, so 3:19:59 got in though).

You can run a sub 3:15 next year, right??? Time to change your goal in your signature

New York is a cheater course now, someone is stirring the pot

I think you're in the same age bracket as me which makes the standard a "mere" 3:20, regardless it's on here: https://www.chicagomarathon.com/apply/

I've been tossing around the idea of Twin Cities Marathon next year but the main reason for that is the proximity to my parents and having a built in place to stay.

Is Pike's Peak now a cheater course too??

JMac - I can't argue with any of that.  To be honest, I have no personal fear of being exposed given it MOST LIKELY would have been mild for me vaccinated or unvaccinated. The main issue for me is if I do carry it, without knowing it, I may take it into the rest home where Mum is and it would not be mild for her or the other residents.  They are allowing unvaccinated people to visit but with much stronger protocols than the already stringent protocols which makes sense.

If I am going to get it at some stage, now is the time before my vaccine wears off, start of a training cycle and heading into summer.  Even before all this I was paranoid about getting a cold though, because I don't like the inconvenience of training and life being interrupted so I'd still prefer to never catch it.  It sounds like treatments aren't far away and that will be the biggest game changer in my opinion, assuming good efficacy.

Qualifying - I went into the 45-49 age bracket 2 days ago (YIKES).  For some reason I thought that was still around 3 hours.  3:20 should be achievable, especially on a course like Christchurch assuming it's not as hot as this year.

              Chicago has various time standards.

Unlike Boston, Chicago has a lottery.  But if you run a certain time, you get guaranteed entry.  Those times are:

              Age group Men Women
              16 – 29 3:05:00 3:35:00
              30 – 39 3:10:00 3:40:00
              40 – 49 3:20:00 3:50:00
              50 – 59 3:35:00 4:20:00
              60 – 69 4:00:00 5:00:00
              70 – 79 4:30:00 5:55:00

Then they have faster times for the ADP program (you get some perks):

              Qualifying standards Half marathon Marathon
              Men sub 1:11:00 sub 2:35:00
              Women sub 1:20:00 sub 2:55:00
              Masters – Men sub 1:15:00 sub 2:43:00
              Masters – Women sub 1:25:00 sub 3:05:00

Then even faster times make you an elite (more perks and free entry, hotel, food, etc)

High performance standards Half marathon Marathon
              Men sub 1:07:00 sub 2:23:00

              Masters – Men sub 1:11:00 sub 2:32:00

I would want places where I shop to have vaccinated staff.  It reduces the chance of me catching (I am vaccinated), plus others Incl. my 10 year old who is too young to be vaccinated.

Wow - The protected vaccinated having a problem with the unvaccinated. I have no words.

Piwi - Big up to your wife as NZ sounds like a nightmare if you don’t do what the governments says.

What JMac says is bang on the money.  About Covid that is, since I'm retired from marathons, no comment on those.  Other than suggesting Steve goes out and enjoys the first one without stressing too much about a time goal.

One of the interesting behavioural things about all of this is that it is a reminder that generally people aren't good at perceiving risk in a balanced way.  Some people are all like 'AH I'M GOING TO CATCH IT AND IT'S GONNA KILL ME' despite us having more motor vehicle fatalities in one weekend than we did in the first 2 months of the lockdown (and no-one thinks twice about getting in their car).  Some people are all like "I'm young and bulletproof and I don't need to get vaccinated because I will be fine even if I do catch it".

Mark - I think you're right about trying to enjoy my first one, although I think my goal is conservative so it's possible I can enjoy it, hit my goal and qualify for Chicago all in one hit.

Darkwave - I also threw in a reference to the dreaded downhill course discussion...we are all dicing with thread shutdown today.

I was wondering the same thing TBH.  The former would probably get the thread closed down quicker.

Steve - all we need now is a debate about easy pace (which I would add we haven't had in quite a while...).  And on the other topic, if you think that's a conservative goal, all the better.
