Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Wow CK  Great race on what sounds like a really tough course. Those are some seriously uneven splits which implies quite a bit of elevation. You need a flat and fast course to go sub-18 after CIM. I would be really annoyed with that timer as he's clearly blowing smoke up your ass.

Piwi  2 a days!! Sounds like you're living the good life.

I seem to have a full blown sinus infection which is beyond frustrating and probably why I had the high HR last week. Means I can't expect to do much this weekend either.

    1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

zebano - That's annoying but explains your results last week.  Hope you get over it quickly.

piwi - I'm not noticing any improvement yet, still a lot of pain.  The pain is at its best when I walk/run and the fatigue doesn't seem to impact me when I'm running so far.  I have discussed it with the coach though and won't be attempting any workouts this week.  Sleep has been sporadic so I expect some fatigue impact soon.

Keen - Nice RR and great time on a tricky course.  Still more scope to bring that down to what that incompetent timer thought it was.  I'm eagerly awaiting CIM.  It's a 4am start on Monday morning NZ time so hopefully I can track most of the second half of the race.  Is there live tracking?  I can't see anything on the website yet.

Piwi - Thanks! The splits on Strava are probably based off GPS. What I listed in the RR are the elapsed times according to the course markings.

Zebano - Thanks as well! That was also my assessment - he clearly didn't grasp the oddity that would be a 17:45 runner starting so far back it took 30 seconds to get to the line.

Steve - Sorry there's no improvement yet, but hopefully it'll come soon.
I'll have to defer to RP regarding tracking for CIM. It would really surprise me if there's no tracking, but I can't find a single mention of it on the CIM website or an obviously-named app for it either.

          Steve,

I know nothing about Shingles other than hearing that it's worse when adults get it (is that accurate?). What's the timeline on recovery and if you feel better while running why aren't you lining up a 200km week  (j/k don't do that).

zebano - Haha, good theory.  I wake up feeling so rough from the codeine that it takes a while to drag myself out the door at all but I feel much better after about 10 minutes.

Shingles is only found in adults.  After you have chicken pox the virus lies dormant in your body and for one third of adults will reactivate as Shingles, usually when elderly.  It's pretty rare, although certainly possible, to happen when you're under 50.  There seems to be a lot of cases in under 50s at the moment.  If you get chicken pox for the first time as an adult I think that's pretty bad.  There is a vaccine for chicken pox and shingles though (I imagine it's the same vaccine?).  It's not available in NZ until you turn 50 and free for over 65s.

darkwave - Another easy way to tell us apart is to remember one of us has gone sub 1:30 this year and one hasn't....

I'm going to blame failing sub 1:30 on the vaccine side effects.

The NZ traffic light system for Covid-19 is pretty poor:

              - Based on the green definition, a large chunk of NZ should be at green.  And more than the South island.

              - The fact that you can travel from Orange to Red and vice versa means that spread will happen.

As Mark said, in Oranga big races are fine, we'll just need our vaccine pass.  So Orange is effectively the new Green.

Keen - well done on the race.  The course/conditions combo must've been fun as those splits are all over the place but you really did a good job of smoking that last km.

Zebano - bummer on the sinus infection.  Recall you had one of those not too long ago as well?

Steve - I had chicken pox as a kid too so hopefully this is not something I have to look forward to!

I am one of the rare people to not have the vaccine or the chicken pox. I guess I should look into the vaccine. I'll ask my doctor anyways.

Mark, yes, I am terribly susceptible to colds and sinus infections. I thought I had it beat a couple years ago after an elective nasal surgery which reduced their frequency, but I still get way more of them than anyone I know.

CK I actually beat my nephew at my 5k, mostly because the start had gates narrowing it to about 8 feet so people would cross the timing mats and he and his family started back behind a bunch of walkers.    I guess I should send him down to make your timer feel justified.

Zebano - any chance you had the vaccine as a kid, and don't remember getting it.  Adult chicken pox are much worse than kids, so I'd get the vaccine if I were you.

Zebano - Definitely look in to getting that chicken pox vaccine. Everything I've heard is that it's FAR worse to get it as an adult than a child.
I didn't even know there was a chicken pox vaccine until it came up in a dr.'s appt. for DD1 when she was little.

I also used to get a ton of nasal infections - maybe 6 or so per year, but fortunately haven't had one in a few years.

I have a very vivid memory of the day I came down with chicken pox in first grade. I also remember my little brother (4 years younger) being very jealous of the extra attention I got and how he wanted the chicken pox, too. Then his accusatory finger-pointing and "you gave me the chicken pox!" when I returned from my first day back at school after recovering when he discovered that sometimes getting what you wish for isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Yep, definitely check and see if you'd had the chicken pox vaccine.  It's probably worse than Shingles and I wouldn't recommend this.  Plus it's tried and tested over many years

piwi - apparently "pox parties" were a thing back in the day before the vaccine was available/used widely.  If a kid got it, they try and make sure they all got it since it's much better to have under the age of 10.  At 16 would have been rough.

Heh, same applies to kids with Covid but something tells me Covid parties won't become a thing in this day and age.  Call it a Corona Party and I might attend.

                            Typo - corrected they year.

In 2011 both my daughters had chicken pox.  The oldest was about 4 and was fairly mild, albeit with atypical spots.  My youngest around 6 months was hardly effected.

Early on, before we realised it was pox.  Our 19 year old neighbour who had not had pox or been vaccinated, baby sat them.

She got really unwell, and ended up with a rough ear infection which put her in hospital.

I had chicken pox when I was a kid.  I can't remember whether my brother or I got it first but mum did her best to make sure we both got it, had us drinking from the same cups, etc.  The vaccine wasn't around when we were kids but our 4 year old has had hers.  I think it's one of the newer ones.

Mum tried the same thing when my brother got mumps (again, this was before the vaccine), but for some reason I never caught that off him.  By the time I was around 10 or 11 the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine was rolled out, and so I got the vaccination then.  I think before that measles and rubella had separate vaccines.
