Watson - You mentioning that your then 6 m/o caught a very mild case reminded me that that same thing happened to me. I don't remember this at all (too young) but I had a very mild case as well, just a couple spots and it clearly wasn't enough of an infection for me to build an immunity to it.

One thing I think is interesting about the chicken pox vaccine is that it's actually more to protect against a later shingles case as that's more severe than chicken pox, but you can't get shingles without first getting chicken pox.

My legs are feeling a bit funky - almost tired or sore. I just keep telling myself that it's just taper issues, but it's still weird until I've been running for a bit and worked it out of my system.

Great race & RR, Keen.  If I were to try to run a 5K in sub-40-degree weather with wind, I'd look pretty much like your Overdressed Guy, I guess with tights instead of pants.  I expect that trying to run 5K pace in those temperatures would cause me to pull or tear something.  I believe it was 85/29 during my good 5K in October, and I didn't mind that since it wasn't too humid.

Have to check and see whether I had the chicken pox vaccine as a kid.  Thought I did, but I was a kid a while before most of you, so maybe it wasn't available back then.  My sister, who I'm sure was vaccinated if I was, had the shingles a few years ago, for what that's worth.

I'm in danger of getting optimistic again.

Southern Lakes HM has announced they're opening entries on Sunday for their race on 7 May 2022, and will be able to go ahead regardless of whether Otago is at red or orange then (tbh it's a small event so wave starts of 100 probably only means 2 or 3 waves!).

Running Events has just posted that they're not far off publishing their plans to be able to operate the North Shore 10km series I'm entered in over summer, and seemed to suggest they will be able to go ahead at red (again, I'm assuming probably wave starts or something).  Keeping my fingers crossed here and hoping it doesn't end up being a virtual event (yuk).

For both of these pieces of news to drop on the same day... that's gotta be a good omen right?

I think the majority of NZ races will happen 2022.

Most likely cancellations will be bigger winter races.  Looking at Europe, it is winter where hospitalisation spikes.

DW - Got it, yeah you’ve got yourself an odd puzzle and it's been going on for quite a long time as well 😞

Mark - Some good news re: races, finally.

Keen - Thanks for the race report! I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that you use official km/mile markers Big grin

That was an excellent time on a tough course.

Piwi - Yeah, lots of hobbies away from the computer will lead to a long life.

Watson - You still got time for a sub 90 😎

Hop over to Prebbleton  and run a 1h29 low time trial, make sure to finish it in front of Steve’s house.

Zeb - I had quite a lot of cold/flu bouts in 2019, but it seems using nasal jet to clear the air ways + a flu shot did the trick.

Vaccines - so Brazil historically always had a very good tracking record of vaccinating the population for the basic stuff (measles, polio, etc).

In recent years however it seems there are more and more anti vax people, so there have been quite a few of measles outbreaks and the like.

These people not vaccinating their kids are likely muppets falling for online discourse likely fed by some Russian agency.

Races - So the fuckers at government are already starting to meddle with races. And that's why I'm in favor of a smaller government, just way too many idiots lying around. There's uncertainty if the races are going to go ahead, or what idiotic measures the government is going to take.

FFS, it's 87% of the whole population vaccinated and there's been like 8 deaths per day with low hospital pressure.

Our rules and regulations are ridiculous and inconsistent too.  They don't even follow their own guidelines.  As for the anti-vaxxers, I try not to lump them all together because some have legitimate sane reasons, and obviously many do not.  I'm not anywhere close to being an anti-vaxxer but I'm growing more and more anti-mandate by the day as I see what's happening in NZ.  Also, go check out the Unherd facebook page for an interview with an Aussie chick who did not have Covid, but her friend did, and she was taken by force to a Quarantine camp for 14 days.

Mark - I think you can be reasonably confident now.  I can't see harsher restrictions being imposed now, especially with the way the polls are going.

CIM Racers - Go get it, exciting to see how all 3 of you go.

Yeah I was not even referring to the people not taking the covid vaccine, it was about the other vaccines (measles,  polio) that have been around for decades, humanity was achieving eradication of some diseases and then these morons set us back. It's unbelievable we have measles outbreaks in 2021.

That movie idiocracy was very on point 😂

Steve - the inconsistency is ridiculous.  Even by the way the system is defined, Auckland should be at orange right now.  Good case for other parts of the country being at green given vaccination rates.

Flavio - very few people argued about getting the polio or measles vaccines because the possibility of death and / or permanent disability was very real.  In our lifetimes we've been lucky to have extremely low rates of both thanks to vaccines (polio was ALMOST completely eradicated).  Somehow people seem to forget this.

Me - as you can tell from the volume of weather complaining, this was the week the classic Auckland summer kicked in - grey, warm and humid.  Slightly lighter week this week, which was probably a good thing to give me a chance to adapt.  Got my Southern Lakes entry this morning when it opened... managed to get #3, if I hadn't been out running when entries opened I may have been able to score #1 haha.  That'll definitely be the goal race for the first half of next year.

Flavio - Yep, tried and tested vaccines that give almost 100% protection against horrible diseases...seems like a no brainer even for people with no brains.

Mark - Nice week, the way you've kept things going will pay off when you finally get to race.  Did you enjoy your "freedom" day?  Grinds my gears hearing the media calling it that.  It appears the definition of the word freedom has changed!

me - Slightly increasing the volume this week which felt reasonably good.  I think I'm coming to the end of the shingles but I'm still getting up twice each night to take more painkillers so there is some fatigue.  Yesterday was pretty warm and with the added fatigue I did start to feel it towards the end.

Steve - thanks for the link.  Sounds like you're improving which is great news but I can't imagine it's much fun having to wake up in the night twice like that. When I had my knee injury, I used to wake up in pain in the night and stupidly not take painkillers (or only the more mild ones... I saved the tramadol for in case I really needed it), so at least you're being smart about it (unlike me).

With the Southern Lakes HM announcement, CHC is probably off the agenda for me for now unless Omaha HM at the end of March gets cancelled.  It looks like Running Events are planning to try wave starts for their events if we are at red, and Omaha is already relatively limited capacity-wise (500 I think?) so I'd say it's fairly likely that'll go ahead.  Unless the government changes something, which could easily happen.  It might actually work out quite well in a late March slot as opposed to the usual sweaty slog-fest in early December, but equally the weather could go either way.

And all the best to the CIM racers!  Keen and RP (and Cal if he reads this forum)... all the best guys.

This week was more of the same for me, with mild upper left hamstring tightness near the end of most of my run-walks and occasional lower right hamstring tightness too.  It doesn’t seem to be getting worse and may be gradually improving, so I guess this is just what base training is going to look like for a while.  This was my fourth week in a row over 40 miles, so that’s good.  Also, my easy runs in the park are getting slightly less slow - even adding in the walk breaks, my average pace is faster than my usual 8:30-40/mile.

DW and I got our covid boosters (and our flu shots) this afternoon.  We felt mildly ill the day after our second shots back in April, and we hope it won’t be any worse this time.  Tomorrow will be an off day either way.

                          Sun - 6 miles in park @ 8:11 + 0:50 walk breaks after each 1.5 miles

Mon - 8.8 miles very slow on treadmill (102 minutes) + 0:40 walk breaks after each 6:00

                          Tues - 9.3 very slow on TM (108 minutes) + 0:40 walk breaks/6

                          Weds - 15 minutes swimming

                          Thurs - 6.0 in park @ 8:13 + 0:50 walk breaks after each 1.5 miles

                          Fri - 8.8 very slow on TM (102 minutes) + 0:40 walk breaks/6

                          Sat - 8.8 very slow on TM (102 minutes) + 0:40 walk breaks/6

Mark - I don't really have too much choice about taking something if I want a chance at more sleep.  This morning at 4am I couldn't be bothered so lay there for 20 mins before realising I had no choice but unfortunately by then I was wide awake and didn't get back to sleep.  I only take Ibuprofen during the night, and I'm still taking Codeine about 30 mins before bed but sticking to no more than one a day.  The pain seems to be in a smaller area now rather than widespread throughout the right side of my upper body.

Hopefully you get the races you want but Christchurch is a good backup and there will be a post-race beer if I'm in the land of the living.

James - Nice week and great to hear potentially positive signs with the hammy.

                                Good luck CIM racers!!

I have a race report to drop but I'm just kicking back enjoying it. Despite an ongoing sinus infection  I dropped 4 minutes off my previous best time on my club's  20k trail loop. Time to kick back and take a week off.

Steve  4 am is a terrible time and no-one should be up then. I'd suggest melatonin but I think it only helps you fall asleep, not stay asleep. That sound miserable but at least it also sounds like progress. Good luck.
