Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Kyle that sounds like some carnage at the end of that marathon 😳

Bloody marathons. It only takes one little thing to bugger them up.

You are an endurance monster and I'm certain your good marathon is coming soon.

Keen - ...I know you didn't ask any body to help you troubleshoot this it's just my software developer brain taking over...

As a software developer, doesn't that mean you're going to try to get Keen to recreate the issue?

RP - You were absolutely correct about that first turn and everyone crushing the inside of it. I stayed towards the middle of the road and had plenty of room.
I don't think my stomach was too full. To also answer Zebano & Flavio's questions, I took a SiS beta fuel every 4.75-5 miles, which I practiced during all of my M effort runs as well as 20+ milers as well and had zero issues with them at all. Nutrition before the race was just the same as I had been practicing with before big workouts and LRs as well (brought breakfast with me), though I had even more time to digest it than usual due to how early I ate relative to when the race started.

Flavio - No worries with your input at all, I appreciate it.

Watson - I got a chuckle out of your comment.

Steve - There are no reasonably size races that are at all fast near me. The closest one (OKC is fairly hilly and known for warmer-than-ideal weather. The next two are both in Tulsa - Route 66 usually has good weather but is hillier than NYC, and the Golden Driller is flatter but quite small (but could have decent weather).

Did some sleuthing and found the guy who collapsed in front of me - who won his age group, unless you want to DQ him for having outside assistance.
The guy in this finish video turned around to help the guy who collapsed - as a warning, you can see the guy stumble and collapse on the right-hand side of the video right as it starts. Not quite how I remember it, which is perhaps an indicator of my state of mind. In my memory I was much closer to the guy when he went down and I got to him much faster, and I don't remember the other guy being dressed like that at all.

Keen-  Very sorry about the end of your race, but I'm glad it wasn't a serious injury.  If your legs aren't too trashed, are there any short races nearby in a few weeks that would let you take advantage of your fitness?  Maybe a 5-miler to give you another shot at a PR?

OK,  I have done some sleuthing and both Tulsa and OKC have açaí bowl shops, so either is fine. I found Ediblend specially appetizing.

I think by now it's quite obvious the lack of açaí is the root cause.

Blergh, ran a mile time trial this morning, 5:42.5, about 30 seconds away from my best shape. My anaerobic power was depleted with 800m to go so the last 800 were funny.

I guess I'm going to work on that on the near future. I'm also interested in a 430m strava segment nearby which is about 200m flat and 200m uphill (Total average 3.9% grade, 21m elevation). The king of that segment has ran 1:33, I think I could run close to that.

To be honest there are some reachable segments nearby that I might hit in the next few weeks to keep myself entertained.

Keen - You might just need to come and do the Christchurch Marathon although 2022 is out of the question...yep, I did just recommend conquering your travel issues by coming to the most remote country in the world.  Great to see people running to help out that guy and good on you for doing your part.  That makes your day successful in my books.

Flavio - It took me months to get my speed back after a marathon training block, and I didn't even need to spend the time you have recovering from an actual race.  So that's still a pretty solid result.

I'd recommend you replicate that in your dev environment...if you do it in prod I don't rate your chances of solving it.

Yeah, me too actually.  Took me a good two and a half months to really get my speed back after my last marathon.  Solid effort Flavio.

Ohh you've got some fun names. FTFH might be my favorite hill name, "Taylor Swift" always makes me feel slightly dirty.  One of these days we're going to have to do a pre-race meal showdown. So far I've seen Burger & Fries, Pizza, Acai and Chipotle as contenders.

There is only one accurate answer, and that is Chipotle.  Allergen free, available in most major metropolitan areas in the US and some abroad.  Plenty of easily digestible carbs plus some red meat for iron and protein.

If you live in an area where there is no Chipotle, then it sucks to be you.  And it's entirely understandable why you'd run only downhill courses to compensate.

Zebano - this may be one of my favorite race reports ever.

Bench press - I seem to recall discussing this before - isn't there some sort of conversion factor between pressing dumbbells and a barbell?  I always press dumbbells since I don't have a spotter, and also so that I use both arms equally.

                      My belated week.

67 miles running, 90 minutes pool-running, and ~1500 yards swimming.

M: 8 miles very easy (9:32) and upper body weights/core

Recoveries of 2:35-3:10 after the 800s, 5:30 recovery after the 1600, full recovery for the 200s. Followed with with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
W: Streaming yoga and 10 miles very easy (9:31) plus drills and strides.
                      Th: 90 pool-running and upper body weights/core.
                      F: 11 miles, including a track workout of 3200, 1600, 4x200 in 13:58 (7:02/6:56), 6:41, 45, 44, 44, 45. 5 minute recovery between the 3200 and 1600. Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
Sa: 10 miles very easy (9:37), drills, and streaming yoga.
Sa: 15 miles progressive, split as first 5 miles averaging 9:36, next 5 miles averaging 8:23, next 5 miles averaging 7:23. Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 meters recovery swimming.

The mileage is inflated this week, since I pool-ran on the preceding Sunday and ran on Monday (usually I pool-run on Monday)

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

Bigger week for me.  I've been feeling some fatigue in my quads and I had to dig in a bit on my long run yesterday.  I think it's all related to the Shingles, which continues to cause me some pain and fatigue.  Had to have a nap on Friday about 3pm which is very rare for me.  Hopefully it's on the way out, it's been 3 weeks now.

Steve - wow, the saga continues.  Was hoping you'd be over that by now.  At least you have been able to keep the running ticking over pretty well.

DW - that's a good question, I've wondered that also.  I've always figured you should be able to lift more on a BB chest press than using dumbbells, since your arms are working together rather than individually.  But exactly how much, I have no idea.

Me - basically another week of humid suckage, albeit Thursday was marginally less terrible.  Looks like another week of it ahead with a possible reprieve from next weekend.  This Sunday would've been the Omaha HM and for about the first time ever I was actually glad that Covid forced a race postponement.  I raced a HM once in 20+ degree temps and 99% humidity and it's not an experience I'm keen to repeat.  It might actually work quite well in the new late-March timeslot, it's a beautiful course and hopefully better running weather then, autumn is often pretty good.
