Mother of Cats

DWave - There really aren't many 5ks scheduled for my area for the foreseeable future. There are quite a few more in the Tulsa area, which is a bit surprising to me - I would have expected the opposite to be true. I'd love to run one or more of them, but a ~3.5 hour round-trip for a race that should take less than 19 minutes is a little much for me without anything else to do while I'm there.

You are talking to a woman who has:

    a) driven 4 hours one way to Pittsburgh to race a mile.

    b) flown to Detroit to drive to Flint to race a mile.

    c) taken a 4 hour train up to NYC to race a mile.

Any 5K within 12 hours should be fair game.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Mark I picked up a bug too. My 15 year old son has been home all week coughing and with a sore throat. I started getting it yesterday but so far mild symptoms.

I tentatively went for a 10k " easy " run today and felt fantastic averaging about 4.20/km.

Piwi - I'm glad you drew the pistol handle or else we'd think you're back at drawing genitals like in the past.

You got an itch to scratch. When you're running easy runs at 4:20 it's time to race.

Mark - Man you can't catch a break! I wonder how many swear words you've said upon hearing the news of the new lockdown. I'd reckon around 8

I love reading this!!! I will be sharing with my wife... (story time) A few years ago I was trying to break 6 in the mile and we went on our summer vacation / family reunion week at Clear Lake. I had been looking around and there was a 5k supporting the local education system about 40 minutes away and upon closer inspection it was a " / mile fun run". I emailed the organizers asking if the mile was timed and to make sure it wasn't a kids run. They replied "it's timed, and not a kids run, please enter". So I entered, woke up at 5:30 on that Tuesday, drove over, checked in, warmed up and eventually lined up behind some high school XC runners who were chatting about how much fitness they'd lost since track finished and how they might not break 18 (eye roll). Some lady gets on a bullhorn and thanks all of us for supporting Osage education .... blah blah blah, everyone will proceed 2 streets straight at which point the 5k will follow the lead golf cart to the right while the "kids mile" will follow local triathlete to the left on her bike.... I uttered a rather loud obscenity at this point and the high schoolers were soon laughing at how I was going to beat up on a bunch of kids and one of them told me "just don't lose to any of them, that'd be embarrassing".

Anthem -> gun -> start running and hang a left, meanwhile the lead biker gives a shocked jerk and tries to catch me because she didn't expect an adult to go this way.... and then she starts asking me question!!!! LADY, I'm trying to race a fri***ing mile here! Anyways it was actually pretty nice once she just started leading and started chatting about her races instead of questioning me. After 5 turns I was on a straight back to the start, she wished me luck and told me I had 6 easy. I sprinted the finish, stopped my watch and saw 5:04 ... at which point I also saw .88 miles ... sigh, not even close on the distance. So I cooled down and left as sticking around to get my award seemed really crass. I looked online latter and there were 3 other adult finishers in the mile but IIRC the fastest was about 8:30 minutes. Anyways, my official time was 5:05 which I took to be a good sign that I could break 6 and I went out to a track that Saturday and time trialed 5:59.

oh yeah, the point of the story, my wife still gives me grief about a 1 and a half hour round trip to race a bunch of kids for a "whole mile" (if you inserted lots of sarcasm there, insert more to read it properly).

Zebano that's a funny story. I entered a 5k once which was the shortest event on the day and have a photo of me leading out a bunch of kids. Quite embarrassing. Flavio may remember it.

Way more than that. It’s one thing if there is a mini outbreak, it’s another if it was TOTALLY AVOIDABLE BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN SELF ISOLATING WENT TO WORK AND THE GYM!

Frustrating week for me, as my groin hurt pretty worryingly at the end of my last three runs.  On Thursday, it started around the 9-mile mark of my 10.4, though it didn't seem to be affecting my stride, so I finished.  On Friday it started around the 6-mile mark, so I pulled the plug since it was a slow recovery run anyway.  Saturday was better, but it did start hurting in the last 200 yards of my 10.4.  Hope tomorrow’s off day will help.  I also banged my bad knee on inanimate objects twice, once on the edge of an open car door.  Lots of immediate pain, but apparently no serious damage.  I should’ve specified that running 5Ks in 18 minutes was the way I wanted to imitate Piwi.  Otherwise the week was ok, as I’m able to hold an easy steady pace in the 8:20s or 8:30s longer than I had been.

Sun - 10.4 miles in park easy & steady, interrupted a couple of times

Mon - about 11 miles treadmill (1:39 at what felt faster than 9-minute effort)

Tues - 8.3 miles steady in park @8:37

                      Weds - off

Thurs - 10.4 miles steady in park @ 8:31, groin hurt after 8

Fri - 6.2 recovery @8:58, stopped when groin hurt after 6

                      Sat - 10.4 @8:49, groin hurt last 200 yards

                      Total - about 56.7 miles worth of time/effort - 9th straight week >= 50

Zebano - great story.  I guess that's a lesson about not doing the kids' run (which, as you noted, you didn't think you were doing....)

Piwi - sorry about the bug.  That's a pretty impressive Strava drawing; even more so since it was unplanned.

James - really sorry about the groin.  Just when I was thinking you were in a really good place.  I hope it passes soon.

Bit of a down week for me... was feeling OK until Thursday and then this cold well and truly kicked in.  After last November's experience I played it pretty carefully, ran easy yesterday and took today off altogether, so I'm hoping to be back to normal next week.  Managed a good workout Wed and that was it.

Zeb - that’s hilarious, racing against kids. I think I remember Piwi doing the same and the race picture was very funny.

James - here’s hoping it’s nothing serious and you can continue your awesome streak of 50 mile weeks.

Mark - Yeah, that would be really frustrating. Did you have a plan C?

Piwi - Artistic mind hahahaha. Sorry to hear about the bug, still a nice week.

me - Body is showing the wear and tear of this training block, niggles abound. 3 more weeks to go.
