Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Running Problem

Problem Child

Fake it until you make it. After you make it just call it a fluke and blame the course. It's worked for me for a while. As for going out too fast....well I think my races are kind of one off exclusions where it doesn't apply. I've kind of done well at the one's I've just gone out at race pace and held on for. It's much easier for me to do this instead of running by feel. I roll my eyes when the weekend runs are all sub 8s when I'm not there, and the group is filled with "well it's downhill so it is easy so that is why we are going fast" mixed with "we all REALLY suck at pacing in races and it shows" and I'm the one who asks out loud "YO where is the fire turbo? Who is pushing out this sub 8 pace on Sunday Funday? Y'all wanna kick this thing out of rabbit?" which gets a lot of "well I'm just trying to keep up." So ya....going out too fast is contagious.

Lame week last week. 41 miles. All easy. Getting back into speed work just hasn't happened. Either lack of passion or I try to at least be NEAR my desk/work for more than two hours a day. What can I say other than I'm efficient.

Good job on the races over the weekend. Looks like everyone has been doing well. Apparently CIM registration opens soon so I might make that a goal race. Maybe PR the half and the full again.

    Flavio when DOESN'T darkwave podium?

darkwave I think my approach to the marathon is "get comfortable being uncomfortable. This isn't going to be fun." and I go from there. Sometimes it works and it sucks for the last 1.2-13 miles. Some times it goes up in flames and I start walking past the Chicago Blackhawks stadium/arena.

zeb I have no need for fans. I have 20 mph winds often enough I just go outside on race day. If it's hot it's hot.

new shoes arrived. Just in time for a trail half marathon I'm NOT prepared for. Shouldn't be fun. NOT looking forward to it. Hope to die. no really. I hate this event because I never train for it.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Piwi - you should run that park run just because you can.

Steve - sub 3h20 seems to be a very good target for you. Listen to your coach!

Darkwave - LOL so much that. We always come up with silly excuses (too hot, too cold, not as many sips of water, the moon was not in the right place).

RP - Yeah, most women running sub 1h30 are regional elites and at least 2 orders of magnitude faster than us.

      me -

In non running news, Mom and Dad and Father in Law got vaccinated today. All my aunts are waiting anxiously for it (that's huge).

      In running news:

      5k time trial report

HELL YEAH!!!! HELL YEAHH! HELL YEAHHH! HELL YEAHHHH! HELL YEAHHHHH!

      17:56.7

Yeah, I'm counting the milliseconds for this one.

It was one of the hardest 5ks I've ever run.

I knew it was a huge risk running a 5k 9 days after a half marathon, but I just had to do it before my fitness evaporates like it happened back in late October.

I just had to do it.

I was feeling recovered physically, just not sure how heart & lungs would work.

In the past I used to use the formula +12s per KM when going double the distance and -12s per KM when going half the distance.

So a 5K would be in that theory -24s per km or 3:29 (Half was 3:53).
I had no idea whether that would happen though. But I had a sense that even if I was not recovered I could still run the 3:35 high needed for a sub 18.

This was my 11th attempt at a sub 18 5K since April 2016.

Technically I had gotten it before last September but at the time I decided to run an extra 60m to account for GPS errors so I'm not going to consider that my PR in hopes I can repeat that in a race in the near future (Note: I crossed the 5k mark faster that day than today).

This was incredibly hard, I was already in the RED zone by the end of the first mile.

I started out thinking maybe I could run something close to 17:30, but from the very beginning I noticed that I was not running sub 3:30/km pace.

      At worst I wanted these splits: 3:36, 7:12, 10:48, 14:24, 17:59

      KM 1 - 3:32 (4 seconds under)

      KM 2 - 3:37 - 7:09 (3 seconds under)

When it clicked 2km I was already suffering quite a bit and the heart rate (which was surprisingly accurate) shows that. I was scared for a short moment thinking maybe it was physical tiredness, but quickly thought it was ALL cardio burn and just embraced the pain.

I was a bit concerned here as I thought if I'm running the 2nd K this slow it might all fall down.

      KM 3 - 3:35 - 10:44 (4 seconds under)

At this point it was already hard to breathe and it was a long way to complete the 5k. I was also counting the laps just in case the GPS screwed me up, I knew 6 laps or so would be 5k.

I'm surprised I managed to count the laps to be honest.

In my mind I just thought keep the cadence and let it burn.

      KM 4 - 3:36 - 14:20 (4 seconds under)

I'm keeping this so close, so close, but I'm still 4 seconds ahead, I just can't give up now.

It's burning strong and my face must be blue at this moment.

      Km 5 - 3:35 - 17:56.7

I took an extra 1.2 seconds to hit the stop button, gotta work on that LOL

Damn Flavio! That's super impressive to hurt in KM2 and hold on, especially in a time trial! I don't have the appropriate words.

            1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

Flavio - Sub-18!!! Way to go, man. I hope to join you there before the end of the summer.

Mark - I had to search for it on Strava, but just found your race. Killer job, congrats!

DWave - Nice week, and race added.

Zebano - Bummer about the wrong turn and bonus distance.

RP - Free new shoes? Nice. How are they?

Me - No real RR, because disaster and Thread Dictator.
I went into the later afternoon thinking I wasn't going to be able to run the race because of a possible conflict with my wife's work - which lead to me eating like I wasn't going to race the next day. Fatty bits of the beef spare ribs my wife made? Sure! A couple handfuls of macadamia nuts? Don't mind if I do!
Fast forward to about mile 3.5 and I start having some lower GI issues that get progressively worse until maybe mile 6.5, at which point an emergency pit stop was made. I felt a good deal better after this.
The last .5 mile was really bad, though. My second ever side stitch hit, and HARD. I did a walk/run thing to the finish and just managed to secure an overall win. Considering that my overall pace was about the same as the HM I ran two weeks ago (in worse conditions), I'm very not pleased with the outcome. I'll be sure to control my diet better before the 15k this Saturday.

CIM registration should open soon. Here's hoping.

Flavio well earned sub 18. You are so inspiring with your dedication to improving.

You could have easily lost momentum after km 2 but brought it back nicely.

My last 5k i averaged 173 bpm maxing at 180 and I'm nearly 53 so you must have a lower heart rate.

I like how positive you are at the start of these time trials. Lots of swagger

We are spoilt here with Parkrun every weekend. I will make a decision Friday if I run or not. Will need easy days from now in.

Keen good job on the win !

                  Do you guys celebrate Easter?

Its Easter here this weekend 4 days off and the end of daylight savings for us.

Geez, this is actually REALLY awkward. Having a really poor (for me) race and feeling like poo through most of it, but not being able to say anything about it when someone congratulates me afterwards. I would much rather have run a time I that's a reflection of my fitness but come in dead last in doing so.

Flavio - Great effort!  So fast.  You showed some real guts.   I had a session with my coach last night and you are right, I will listen.  The "race" next week will be a workout at MP with extra kms to cool down and warm up.

CK - Completely hear you on that.  It's really tricky when you've crashed and missed a target by a minute or 2 and people (who are only trying to be nice) say things like "well you should be glad you finished".  Also, can you update my goal for the April 11 race to 1:40 and STICK TO THE PLAN

Flavio - awesome job, congratulations!  It's great to see you hitting all these breakthroughs after all the work you've put in.  Really gutsy effort considering it sounds like to had to battle a bit from fairly early on.  Well done.

Keen - good job battling it out, sounds like a tough day out there.  It's certainly way more rewarding when you feel like you've run well and have got a time that reflects that rather than a particular placing.

We have had some miserably hot, windy and humid conditions here since the weekend.  Looking forward to autumn resuming.

                            RIP Milkman

Yup.  And they wonder why.  And consider every possible reason, except the most obvious and likely - that they were running faster than they could sustain that day for the marathon distance.

The pain between a good marathon and a bad one is worse than any race you've ever run. Every marathon hurts, but bad ones put you into the darkest corners of your soul for 30-60 minutes, which is a long time to have bad thoughts.

Speaking of pain, another congrats to Flavio. After some disappointing years on this board, you are having yourself one hell of a 2021.

Keen - as a man who battles side stitches literally every race I run, I know the pain. If you don't get them under control quickly, it gets to be unbearable. I have so many tricks to do that, but sometimes they just won't budge. And don't feel bad about being upset even with a win. There are 5Ks near me where 20:XX will win. That time requires a lady gaga suit on these boards. Nobody is celebrating that as anyone who has done serious training.

Me - getting back into running for real now after my hiatus in the mountains. I still have some issues with my foot (weird mix of achilles/plantar issues, must be a chain problem). 6 months of light training has done nothing, and convinced me once again rest doesn't work except for the biggest of injuries. I will probably go see a foot specialist. Always wary of going to podiatrists, but also wary of foot and ankle doctors. Both have their pros and cons. It's like I need a foot and ankle sports doctor who isn't focused on surgical solutions to everything.

Also, I need to start racing again. I miss it. My last race was 13 months ago. Will start exploring what's out there for late April and May when I can at least do a rust buster (will be months before I can run some real times out there).

No, he's not in NY.  But according to his website he is doing telemedicine consults, and it might be worth getting his take.  He's a podiatrist who has broken 15 minutes for 5K, and is very running focused.  I met him about 2 years ago when he gave a talk organized by my coach (they were college teammates).  I was very impressed.  Savvy smart guy who wants to keep runners running and thinks surgery is a last resort.

If I was in your situation, and didn't have people I trust locally, I'd be doing a telemedicine appointment with him.
