Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Marky_Mark_17

Mark - congrats on a great run! I think you know where I stand on this. You can consider whatever you want, but a half marathon that measures almost a tenth of mile short and is 700+ feet straight downhill (it's not like it had up hills to combat it) is not even close to a legit PB. That's more like a 1:12 on a legit course. I'd be even more wary of counting it given you broke the magical 1:10 number. It also looks like almost everyone measured right around that 13.04 to 13.05 mark, which should be about 13.15 or so on a legit certified half marathon course.

But again, it's your personal number, so count whatever you want!

I knew where you stood before you even posted this.  One of the first things I said in my post-race post was "not sure I'll call it a PB".

I had many times late last year where I struggled my way through even easy runs and thought I was pretty much done, that I had no chance of ever being as good as I was in 2019 and early 2020.  And I know guys - former clubmates - that have had exactly that happen to them, so you know, "what if I'm gonna end up like Brad Luiten?" went through my head plenty of times.

What is or isn't my PB is my call, and everyone else's to judge, but that isn't even what matters here.  What matters to me is that I ran a race that is absolutely up there with my very best performances, that I went out there with a crazy goal and ran like hell to get it, having doubted that I could ever get even close to that level again.  As much as I hope no-one on this thread ever goes through a hole like that, if you do, you'll understand.

Sorry Steve missed your post. Damn fine week and your long runs are becoming legendary Dave Parsons type

Yeah my grumpy mate made a sarcastic remark today when I said I thought the shoes were worth 3 sec per km. He replied only 3 secs  🤔. Anyway he's the only negative to a good weekend. I was thinking sub 1.24 as an A goal but after today it could well be 1.23.xx

Mikey cheers yeah I had sub 38 as a goal requiring 3.48/km. Its been 2 months of good training since I ran 38.44 so I knew I should be quicker.

Steve - very good week and glad to hear that you are handling the mileage OK, very satisfying hitting those peak weeks.  I used the Endura gels in the past and they worked fine, only switched off them as it was more convenient for me to have a product like SIS or Maurten that doesn't need to be taken with water.

You are coming across as a bit self-absorbed. The rest of the world has been dealing with a pandemic and had no opportunity to race for the last year. I don’t think anyone is doubting that you had a great run and like you say, it’s your call whether you call it a PB.

Let’s not turn this into the sub 3 thread of old. It’s not self absorbed to be proud of a great result and not be filled with joy about detractors. And we had a lot of goal races cancelled, obviously not as bad as some countries, a minor advantage of being in the middle of nowhere

Mark - nice week, and once again big congrats on the win.

Piwi - nice week also and congrats on the 10k time trial.

                  Steve - nice week too.

Admittedly it's not saying much, but I had my best week this year.  On Saturday I realized that I hadn't charged my watch, so ended up bailing. And instead made my Sunday run my long run which was hilly and very hard.  I was thinking that 848m elevation was my most ever in a week, but looking back on Strava there's a few bigger elevation weeks.

Mark - once again great job on the win! Winning races is super cool. I say that from the top of my experience of having won ONE race.

I believe I have a good idea of what you were feeling over the past few months. I’ve spent 2017 and 2018 barely able to complete a race, being injured for 26 weeks of 2017.

It’s super annoying and it requires double the mental resilience every month that goes by to just not give up.

You also had a rough patch last year with many cancelled races and overtraining.

We are proud of our running achievements because they take so much preparation, planning and grit to complete.

Piwi - I will confess I was not sure I was going to write that joke, but I was laughing out loud for some good 5 minutes when it occurred to me, I even had to tell the whole context to my wife so I could tell her the joke haha.

Happy birthday and awesome job in the 10k time trial, low 37’s for 10k.

I’d say now you have to run under 1h22 in your upcoming half. No pressure.

                    James - lovely doggo!

Steve - awesome week and that long run was on incredible!

me - Another nice recovery week with a moderately fast long run today, pulling the brakes all the way, feeling light and bouncy.

Pescara is a treasure to run at. Beach on the one side, mountains with ice caps on the top on the other.

                    Fresh ocean air.

I'll have a video call with the new coach on Monday to go over history and objectives.

There's no way you can call it a PB.  The only proper debate is whether or not it counts as a PR.

Everyone on this thread is wrong, in that you've missed this key nuance.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

Piwi - what a phenomenal effort in your TT! I think the 10.03 is legit but hilarious you forgot to check the watch. I would be staring at it with the pain I was in and wanting to stop. You are in unbelievable shape and that is a worthy new old man PR. This has been the most dedicated you've been to running since I joined in 2016 and very happy to see these kinds of results. I hope you stick with it because I think you have more to come.

I will definitely beat that age graded PR. I'll just search for a Kiwi certified course near me
