Zebano  best of luck at the park run.

The good news for my 10k on Saturday is the forecast wind chill is now a positive number rather than the negative four it was earlier this week.

    5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);
    10M 1:29:33 (2/24); Half 1:48:32 (10/22); Marathon 4:29:58 (11/23)

Upcoming races: RunAPalooza (Asbury Park) HM, 4/6; Clinton Country Run 15k, 4/27

Fred - sorry, I chuckled. Stay warm.

HCK - that's an absurd lack of snow. I assume you have the sub -0 temps without the joy of snow? That's a shame.

      1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

No worries.  I'll be warm enough, but there is a point where the clothes needed to keep warm start to slow me down, so I'll be running for the fun/adventure rather than a time.  Fortunately, there's a heated bathroom 50 yards from the start/finish so I'll have a sheltered place to change before driving home.

zebano, we got snow overnight.  The official measurement was .2 inches, I don't think it was that much. Our winters are usually a high around 40. It rare to have a highbeliw freezing.

Fred, I'm jealous you'll have a heated bathroom at your trail race. I guess I'm going to do my very deleted one. POPs and change in my car. I really hope there were no security cameras in the parking lot, they would have gotten a quick show last time I ran this race.

This is kinda amusing because it's such a contrast to what I'll probably have to deal with for my HM on Sunday.

20C (68F), 94% humidity.  I might even be grateful for the NE wind that's supposed to happen (and will be a headwind for the last few km) as it might make things a little more bearable.  Not gonna be a fast day, that's for sure.

I ran a half in conditions like that once.  Slightly warmer and just as humid.  It was brutal.  It was also an out and back and the wind was about the same speed I was running.  The wind was behind me for the "back" section, which meant I felt no breeze whatsoever, not even from my own forward motion since the air was moving about the same speed and direction I was.  That was my 3rd slowest half ever, surpassed only by the one run on a hotter day with more elevation while suffering from a cold, and the winter half I ran two days after suffering from a norovirus.  Good luck.

Ugh, the tailwinds that never eventuate, those are so disappointing.

I had similar conditions for a half in mid-March 2019.  It was miserable.  I remember it well because I ran well over five minutes quicker just a few weeks later in much better conditions (admittedly on a faster, flat course, but I'd say the hills on the slow one were only good for a minute and a half of that difference).

edit: and I just realised that the worst conditions I ever had... Orewa 2018 which was a few degrees warmer again and 99% humidity (not joking... there was a massive downpour about 30 minutes after I finished).  I ran almost 8 minutes quicker a few weeks later... on a tougher course!

I'm feeling much better about 30 degrees or so at the start of my trail race now. Sure beats warm and humid. I ran a PW HM in September 2018. It was 70 and likely equal dewpoint. My last mile was 3 minutes slower than the first. Worse, the race used a major bridge and directions were very clear not to stop on the bridge.  In addition,  homeland security was on the bridge to make sure you didn't stop.

This! Sorry Mark, those are some bad conditions. Fred can at least post in the more miles than degrees thread. Will that be the first race there?

You know I ran a half once in 70F and 100% humidity and it was an absolute death march but it was still easier than the 50k trail race I signed up for in 2018 which was literally deep mud or snow the whole way. Anyways may the weather gods bless you all.

Zebano- You brought up a question that's often been discussed - does windchill count for more-miles-than-degrees?  Some say yes.  Others say wind chill is subjective and only the objective thermometer reading counts.  I say it's whatever the person running it wants to count.  I go by the thermometer but I won't discount those who use the wind chill number.

I met my RP for an 8/5 run today.  I've been struggling with my HM pace runs for several weeks now, but today went really well.  We averaged 8:22 for the 5 HM miles, much better than last week's 8:43.  I just felt stronger today.  The pace isn't quite the 8:17 - 8:18 we were doing last fall, but it's better than a year ago, when we were running 8:27 - 8:29 for our winter pace runs.  I've now had three good workouts in a row (Sunday's long run, Tuesday's 1600s, and now the 8/5) and am starting to get my confidence back.  I will have to temper expectations for Saturday's 10k trail race, coming just two days after today's pace run whereas two weeks ago I was coming off a mini-break to rest my knee/hip.  Current forecast is 13-feels-like-3 (-11C/-16C).  Tomorrow is going to be warmer at 6:00am than at 6:00pm, so the earlier I run, the better.

I think it was stubbornness and wanting to prove something to myself more than anything else.  I felt fine by race day, just low on energy and fuel reserves, but I do appreciate the sentiment, so thanks.

uff-da that's some stubbornness! Well done. One time I really wanted to run after the flu but I also had a box of GoodNPlentys left over from Christmas that I chowed down on pre run. You can guess how that ended.

I'm going in with pretty low expectations.  But it'll be worth sticking around for the spot prizes as the main prize is a trip for 2 to Hawaii.  I actually think there was a HM a couple weeks back down in Tauranga.  Anything in Jan or Feb is basically guaranteed to be horrible.  Dec or Mar, probably miserable with an outside chance of striking tolerable weather.

This one is actually a 7am start, which I would normally be thrilled about at this time of year if not for the fact it's an hour across town.

Fred, I raced a HM about 3-4 days after having a stomach bug.  I was feeling pretty good until about two-thirds of the way through and then just completely ran out of steam.  2 days after would've been miserable.
