Mark - Glad to hear you came through the storm OK.  I hope the damage isn't too bad for those less fortunate than you.

Watson - Interesting that the plate shoes affect us differently.

HCK - Yeah, trail races can beat you up more than you expect, and for more days.  Daffodils already?  You're not that much further south than me.

Hey guys sorry got super super busy at work/life for a bit there just trying to catch up.

Mick I chuckled about the Netherlands but seriously can't they just copy Norway and get really good at running and XC skiing? Have you tried Altras? They're the shoes least likely to give anyone blisters IMO because they're so darn big. Nice week and great long run.

HCK you must love the Wave riders. In general if a shoe gets less than 300 miles I will never buy it again. Regarding trail, I saw an article on outside that was comparing professional road runners to professional trail runners and one of the things that stuck out is that trail runners are stronger despite less gym time which is an interesting adaption. I'm not sure that has anything to do with your soreness but :🤷‍♂️

James solid week regardless of shortening the easy days. If you're not feeling recovered for the quality then that's the right move in my book.

Mark Your hobble and shuffle are distressingly quick. You gotta find a way to appease the weather gods. I concur, when you're racing you race, doesn't matter if it's a woman or a man.

DW - Nice race but given the glowing review of the new meds last week I was almost expecting 18:high. Way to crush the headwind mile.

Fred I think I said this elsewhere but 6xmile is a big workout.

Steve I'm always curious as to what tempts whom. I could absolutely run sub 1:42 and 1:28 just isn't there for me, but there is 0 temptation. All that being said I do think the 3rd category is a lot cleaner than trying to figure out what levels of testosterone someone has to be at for whatever duration in order to compete as a woman. I can't see most small races being able to afford a prize for a third category which is a whole different can of worms.

Watson I'm not sure this is a fair comparison but the Endorphin Pros (v1) beat the crap out of my calves. I think they're just designed to put stress there. The Endorphin speeds (with a nylon plate) are really kind to my calves.

      1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

I overdid things early last week trying to ramp up my triathlon training and absolutely crashed on the weekend. I also aggravated my right hip flexor on Thur so I ended up skipping my long run.

        M 1200yd swim + 5 mile run

        T lifting + 1200yd swim. 8 mile run with 2x1.3mi uphill + 4x:30 Fast. Great workout!

        easy 25min bike + 5 mi run

Th 1400 yd swim + 5 mi run

F 1400yd swim + 8 mi run with 8x2/1 ... and my stride felt terrible and my hip went from annoying to painful.

S 6 miles, as slow as I could go.

Sun  off- sleep, eat, watch super bowl.

It's kind of the opposite of a weekend warrior approach.

        1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

          Show off.

You bet.  After all those early-morning weekend alarms to catch the first train into the city for 8:00am starts in Central Park or elsewhere, so I could earn my spot via the 9+1, I'm going to crow about it a bit.  10 races doesn't sound like a lot, but getting up at 5:00a or earlier on 10 different weekend dates does tend to mess with the family's social agenda.  Now, if I'm lucky my best time with NYRR will let me squeeze into the end of the 2nd wave rather than having to wait for the third wave (out of five) - the difference between a 9:45 start and a 10:20 start.

I was not 100% serious - when it comes down to it, I'd rather qualify legitimately as opposed to exploiting a made up category.  Of course, if I don't qualify, it will cost me a few grand to get in via a travel package when I'd rather spend that money somewhere else.

Fred - Congrats!  Hopefully you love it enough to come back in 2024.  There's a decent crew from the other thread hoping to be there next year.

zabano, it's less about loving the Wave Riders and more about finding something to replace them. I live dangerously close to the Holabird Sport showroom and have spent a fair amount of money trying to fiind a replacement. None have worked out.

Hi Zeb - the Altras I think are 0 drop - my calves don‘t like those type of shoes. And I find them pretty ugly (sorry Flavio if you are lurking).

floods, cyclone, now the quake. Are the Kiwis ok? Was the EQ big in terms of visible damage? Read it affected both the North as well as the South Island…

Lost power for about 8 hours on Tuesday, otherwise fine.  The earthquake was a bit of a non-event tbh - although closer to Watson than the rest of us.  Cyclone has been far more serious for parts of the upper North Island.

Zebano - Sorry to hear about the hip flexor.  I hope it's not too serious.

Steve - If I run NY in 2024, it will only be via the lottery as I'm not planning to do the 9+1 again this year.  I know people who do it every year and there's one local runner who's only a couple races away from legacy status, which gets him in automatically (I think you have to complete it 15 times).  I started too late in life for that.

HCK - It's always tough when there's a shoe you love.  Sometimes, the only way I get away from a shoe is when the company really screws it up as part of their regular upgrade/revamp process.

Mick - I'm with you on the zero drop.  I know some people love them, but they're not for me.  Maybe I'm just too old to adapt easily.

Mark - Glad to hear you're ok.  I hope Watson and Piwi came through all right, as well as hoping all New Zealanders aren't hit too hard.

It's been several weeks, but I finally had another decent HM pace workout today.  9 miles with 6 at HM pace and averaged 8:21, which is pretty close to what I was doing last summer.  More importantly: it felt good.

Quake here was big enough to give a small right, but too small to cause damage.

Hawkes Bay and East Coast of NZ has been hammered by flooding from the cyclone.  My May marathon is Hawkes Bay, so it might be get cancelled, postponed, course changes or postponed with course changes.

It's a bit strange to be in such a small country with a major disaster and not be impacted at all.  I think the news is going to get much worse once search and rescue gets out to everyone who has been cut off.  West Auckland looks like it's been hammered, and Hawkes Bay just looks terrible.  I had touched base with a mate of mine to see if his family were okay - he finally got back to me this morning when he drove to Hastings to get supplies and finally got some cell reception.  He got through with no serious damage but some of his friends were not so lucky.  He shared this message from one of his friends who lives quite close:

we’re alive… but not by much. House flooded inches from ceiling… swum kids into tree at 5.30am and hung on until level dropped before diving them under water through shed door to get them into loft (once I believed shed wasn’t gonna be flattened) and keep ‘em from hypothermia. Got naked and cuddled up in dog blankets with pugs until water dropped. Nothing but the undies I woke up in. Lost the lot but alive

I saw another story about a family who had to smash their ceiling to get into the attic then hope for the best while listening to their furniture smash into the ceiling.  Just horrific.

watson - Even though May is some way off, with the scale of the damage it wouldn't surprise me if the race is impacted.

Steve - That's some scary stuff.  The storm finally made it to the news here.  I read that something like 95% of the kumara crop may be gone.

Good luck to all of you who have been affected or have friends or family who were.

Fred - Interesting that you don't like zero drop shoes. I mean back in the day all shoes were zero drop, I mean I remember my sports shoes in the 80s they were basically flat as a pancake (mostly Adidas) and they are back en vogue - you see young kids wearing them now where I would say: they are totally uncomfortable why would I want to go out with those?

I will again take the weekend off, so will kick it off with the report. I tend to run my easy runs too fast, because I run some of my miles with a colleague who really has to hold back and I am just too slow for that. But enjoy the company and chatter. Hope everyone is holding up well.

Mick - I have a similar issue with my running partner, for whom my easy pace is too slow.  We mostly run workouts together and do our easy miles alone.  I know what you mean about flat shoes.  I wore Chuck Taylor high tops when I was in high school.  I saw a photo recently of Wilt Chamberlain soaring way above the basket and the really impressive thing is he was wearing Chucks too - to get such height on such dead shoes is remarkable.
