    "CONSISTENCY IS KING"

Mark, my legs are so frail, that there is a real risk I end up injured if I go too long too soon. I hope it won't be a terrible experience, given I didn't have very long runs on the agenda.

I made an overview of my runs, with 2 weeks of taper to race day, which would come on top. Started on Jan 1st building up mileage for 5 weeks, followed by "heavily lifting" for my standards in Feb/Mar:

      Week 1: 50.6km, long run 13.3km, 5.15h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 2: 59.9km, long run 15.6km, 6.08h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 3: 62.1km, long run 15.2km, 6.32h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 4: 60.2km, long run 16.6km, 6.08h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 5: 53.4km, long run 16.4km, 5.28h time on feet, 4 runs

      Week 6: 76.4km, long run 20km, 7.33h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 7: 80.4km, long run 22km, 8.01h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 8: 78km, long run 24.8km, 8.13h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 9: 77.3km, long run 27km, 7.59h time on feet, 5 runs

      Week 10: 71km, long run 14km, 7.59h time on feet, 8 runs (Floridian humidity….)

      Week 11: 82.1km, long run 27km, 8.36h time on feet, 6 runs

      Week 12: 86.6km, long run 28.1km, 8.42h time on feet, 6 runs

      Week 13: 83.7km, long run 29km, 8.20h time on feet, 5 runs

Week 14: 38km, long run 19.4km, 3.46h time on feet, 3 runs plus 87km on bike for 3.14h

      Week 15: 71.6km, long run 20km, 7.14h time on feet, 6 runs

      Week 16: 85km, long run 25.2km, 8.31h time on feet, 6 runs

Averages: 69.8km (43 miles), long run 20.9km, 7h time on feet, 5.3 runs

Too early for any Hash-style lessons learned. But I would have liked to go farther than 29km in the long run. My A goal is to break 4 hours, which given my recent tempo / marathon pace runs, I would believe to be ok with. Will have to remain disciplined about not going out too fast. And I haven't figured out the gels yet....but I am getting there. In general happy with this training block.

So, after running in the VF3's yesterday, I noticed my calves were a little tight later that day, which is rare for me after running in general these days but certainly not something I ever noticed with the older VF's.  Not sore, not even very tight, just tight enough that it was a 0.5/10 in terms of being noticeable.

I'm probably leaning towards sticking with the VF2's for this race, since they are tried and true for me.  Training has been good and I'm not sure when my next goal half will be so kinda wanna make the most of this race.

Half Crazy K 2.0 - Yep my eating and drinking was as it usually is for long runs and races - a nutritionist reviewed it after my last cramping debacle so I'm almost 100% confident that part is okay.

Mark - Wise decision I think.  Not worth the risk in a goal race.  I'm really looking forward to seeing how you go this year.  Have you scoped out the competition?  Hopefully you don't pick up another virus this time round.  Based on your training, if you have a good day that time from 2 years ago is not out of reach.

World Champs marathoner Caden Shields is registered (he ran 1:04 there a few years ago) and Oli Chignell (1:05 PB... at Auckland) was trying to get an entry too (it's sold out).  No-one on the start list I recognise that would be good for me to tag along with, but given the secondary market for entries for this race, you never know who might show up on the day.

I haven't really thought about a goal... mostly I just want to go out there and enjoy it, and put in a performance I can be proud of.  The last few weeks have been a bit nuts on the family front and with everything going on I'm grateful just to have the chance to go down there and race.  I might think a bit harder about that next week once the weather forecast firms up a bit.

Nice one.  I've got an appointment with Caden on Friday so I'll ask him what his race plans are if I remember. He might be closer to 1:02 with the training he's been doing if he's going all out.

Well that's a useful physio to have!  Potential for a course record I'd say which I think is 1:04 low, especially if it's a nice day with a southerly.  If Chignell does run that would help too otherwise he'll be doing it solo.

He's more my strength training coach but also physio.  Andy coincidentally has an appointment at the same clinic just after mine so will come early and join my session with Caden.  It's so good having access to such quality.  Surely it pays off soon...Caden ran 2:15 in Osaka in less than ideal conditions a few months ago so he should be in pretty good shape for Southern Lakes.

I feel bad for asking. However - I would probably be able to run the non-binary qualifying time for the Boston marathon which is about 30 minutes slower than the non-non-binary (or just binary?).

Would that make me a terrible person? Just wondering how many runners are actually doing/thinking the same - I am sure they don't really have a different color bib or the like?

Yes if you don’t genuinely consider yourself non-binary and qualifying for Boston means so much that you use that option. I have the same view with folk who run ridiculous downhill courses to gain a BQ.

Right and wrong is pretty straight forward with me. 🤷‍♂️

Are there any restrictions to terms of getting certified for downhill courses?

I don’t think so. Cal who used to post in the other thread ran a 2:50 marathon last year on a crazy downhill course which would’ve been about 10min faster than his ability and is accepted as a BQ.  Another course is St George in the US which is also a BQ race and massive downhill.

Mikkey you are straight (forward) as I understand. Hence would I go to hell in your book if

                              a) I was to qualify for Boston as non-genuine non-binary and

                              b) I would do so in St.Georges?

That sounds like a lot of fun.
