Mick - My coach sets my workouts by HR mostly now (although the long runs in the next few weeks are based on pace).  I seem to consistently hold in the mid 130s for the pace I consider easy now (5:20/km).  Recovery is definitely something I've looked at, although I never seem to have issues within the training cycle, even at the peak.

Fred - I did a reasonable workout last Wednesday in my new shoes (Saucony Tempus) and my quads remained sore a bit longer than usual.  Possibly related to it only being 10 days post "marathon".

Half Crazy - I don't have my watch with me but the McMillan calculator, for example, gives me (based on my 5km time, describing myself as "speedster" with advanced running experience):

    10km         38:38

    Half           1:26:07

    Marathon   3:01:14

I'm nowhere near those times.  I had previously tried the calculator calling myself a "combo runner" but my 5km suggests I'm more built for speed.  When I said I was a combo runner it predicted a 2:58 marathon.  Something to aspire to perhaps...I'd say the 10km is the most within reach, but even that seems a stretch.

    5km: 18:34 11/23 │ 10km: 39:10 8/23 │ HM: 1:26:48 9/23 │ M: 3:34:49 6/23

    2024 Races:

As at today, Garmin predicts verus my prediction

      5k 19:21

      10k 40:56

      Half 1:37:10

      Full 3:45:14

My prediction right now would be 21, 43, 1:35 and 3:30.

This was Garmin the day of my marathon last September when I was definitely in better shape.

      18:31
      39:02

      1:26:45

      3:08:15

My prediction back then would be 19:30, 40, 1:28 and (actual race) 3:13:55 (course was a few minutes slower than a fast course).

      PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

      40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

      2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

      2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

Well, if this is "share my Garmin predictions" week, here's mine.

             Garmin  My PB
        5k     22:11    23:48
        10k     46:01    49:24
        Half  1:41:57 1:48:32
        Full  3:31:54(!?)    n/a
        5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);
        10M 1:29:33 (2/24); Half 1:48:32 (10/22); Marathon 4:29:58 (11/23)

Upcoming races: Clinton Country Run 15k, 4/27; Running is Back 10k, 5/12

For Watson the marathon prediction was about 5 minutes off your September PB; for Steve it was around 12-13 minutes off from what he would have run, without the cramping. Gosh this is really pretty awefull. I was hoping for more accuracy, especially since I am closer to Fred's times and this makes it seem wildly optimistic Smile bummer

          HM: 1:47 (9/20) I FM: 3:53:11 (9/23)

2024 Goals: run a FM & HM + stay healthy!

MIck - minor point, it was not a PB.

                Mick, I didn;'t ,m,y PRs with Garmin's crazy predictions.

                23:40 5k PR 25:37 in 2012

                49:07 10k, 55:01 2013

                1:46 HM 2:05 2015

3:46 full 5:02, won't really count this one in Garmin's craziness since I only trained enough to complete it and did not push the pace at all.

                Today it's predictions got faster.

What I posted in the Jerks' thread a week ago:

                  "Yup. Garmin 235 says 5K 20:50, 10K 43:12, HM 1.35:40, M 3:19.02. I haven't run a single step since February 10th."

I've run a little more than that, but off and on, no consistency. Garmin Race Predictor gives me the exact same numbers. So those must be the default values when it can't figure anything out.

Not that it can figure out anything appropriate ever.

Nope. Apparently I'd be six seconds slower over the marathon distance today. Veeeery precise!

I don't trust / believe that Garmin race predictor one bit!

                      Double-posting from the other thread...

Anyways it's race day tomorrow and I'm still amazed I managed to swing a solo trip to Wanaka with a 34 week pregnant wife back at home and everything else going on but I've been doing practically everything around the house the last 2 weeks so I think I accumulated enough brownie points.

I don't really have massive expectations for this after last year's disaster. I doubt I'll hit anywhere close to the 1:09 I managed in 2021 which was one of those days where absolutely everything fell into place. I'd like to go better than last year, but mostly I just want to go and race well. The weather doesn't look perfect, a little warmer than I'd like, and possibly a slight head wind. Wanaka is still my favourite place on the planet and just arriving here was good for the soul. Last year I think I probably psyched myself out a bit whereas this year I feel like I just wanna go out and enjoy it. I doubt I'll be able to travel a lot for races for the next little while so gotta make the most of it.

I did end up bringing the VF3's with me, so we'll see how they go too.

Watson - Not only am I running, I'm also transporting the team bibs AND the club tent! I guess it's that time in life when we start to give back...lol. See ya out there!

At last week's XC race, Watson's club had their club tent next to ours. Pretty much same make and model - they popped theirs up in like 2 minutes. 15 minutes of struggle later, we got ours standing. Our aim is to do better this week Smile

Ran 1:15 in the end… slowest time I’ve run on that course but it was tough work with a headwind most of the way and was also 17c / 63 F by the end so unusually warm for this time of year. One of those days you’ve really got to run to effort rather than a pace target and I was fairly happy with how I managed that at least.
